As requested in another thread, here are track titles for Sakura by Susumu Yokota translated into English from Japanese..
This was harder than I thought it was going to be by the way - I thought I could just ask somebody smarter than me about the words I couldnt translate - but some of them are really obscure or untranslateable, and not written on the album in Japanese characters, so much harder to work out (since there are many words with the same sound but written differently in Japanese, but written the same in roman letters, if you know what I mean..). Anyway;
1. Saku - Bloom 2. Tobiume - name of famous old Japanese haiku about an old man feeling sad that his beautiful tree will one day die, but he feels better since the pollen will float away and create another tree somwhere - (Tobi = fly, ume=plum)
3. Uchu Tanjyo - Birth of Universe 4. Hagoromo - Celestial Robe 5. Genshi - Primitive 6. Gekkoh - Moonlight 7. Hisen - Hermit 8. Azukiiro No Kaori - lit. Smell of Red Bean Colour (apparently this is evocative of Autumn..)
9. Kodomotachi - Children 10. Naminote - Dont know 11. Shinsen - Innovation / new way 12. Kirakiraboshi - Twinkle star
Hope this was useful and interesting to someone....

especially track no.2 named TOBIUME, i like your translate. most of ppl in jp don't use this old word. your skill of translating is distinguished.
just my opinion

wow! Hey thanks alot TokyoJo! I do appreciate all the work you put into it! If you ever need help translating some dutch words or something... ;-) I'll be glad to help out.
"2. Tobiume - name of famous old Japanese haiku about an old man feeling sad that his beautiful tree will one day die, but he feels better since the pollen will float away and create another tree somwhere - (Tobi = fly, ume=plum)"
This one is just great! What a beautiful story. I can't wait to listen to this song again now, and see if i can find that same emotion in it...
"7. Hisen - Hermit"
heh, i like that one too :-) (maybe because i'm almost a hermit myself ;-)).
This is also one of my favourite songs on the album! I'm glad the title has such a beautiful meaning.
"8. Azukiiro No Kaori - lit. Smell of Red Bean Colour (apparently this is evocative of Autumn..)"
interesting also... :-) So if i understand correctly... this "red bean colour"... is a bit like the smell of autumn?
"12. Kirakiraboshi - Twinkle star"
I already liked the way that word "kirakiraboshi" sounded... so cute.... hehe, and now i see it also has a cute meaning. Lovely name for the last track on an album!
These were great! Particularly those four, but i found them all very interesting! Thanks alot!

asuki are sweet red beans... hard to describe the taste (the closer taste i know would be chestnut, but you can't really mistake one for the other), but it is very good!
they make a sort of paste of it (don't know the name sorry), and use it in pastry (which is as beautiful as it tastes good)! :)

Cool - glad you liked it...
About the track number 10 - "Naminote"I found out later that this is also an expression used in old Japanese Haiku or Tanka poetry to describe a way of controlling a ship or boat while in big waves... lit. hand of wave- nami=wave no=of te=hand.
But this is a very obscure expression and not used in normal life. Quite poetic though I think.
Far East Monkey might know some more about that..?

lol :-p When reading the first post in this thread, I thought "naminote" literally means "don't know", hehe.
I like this explanation better though.
Naminote does seem kind of out-of-place on this album... doesn't it? Everthing else is electronic and with a nice ambient-atmosphere... and then suddenly this jazzy track with real live instruments :-) But it's cool, it makes sense when you listen to the album.
Tolstoyed must be very thrilled that all his promotion of Susumu's music on this board is finally starting to pay off ;-)

""shilimasen" means "i don't know"... "
i wouldn't know... don't speak any japanese myself :-)
I love the sound of all these words... a part of me would like to learn japanese (and there are really lots of languages i think sound beautiful, and i would like to learn them)... but i am really terrible at forreign languages. I once had to do an entire schoolyear over again because i got a 3 (out of 10) as my final grade for both german and french ;-) (and the languages still make no sense to me... i only memorised two sentences: je ne parlé pas français and ich spreche keine deutsch. :-p)). Only forreign language i seem to be able to cope is english... which i learned all from watching tv ;-) I could already speak english when i went to highschool, and there they only taught me some minor details.
So i think i'd better spend my time on something else eh. But i do like the sound of it (japanese)... for instance that word "shilimasen"... it sounds just wonderful.
Oh, and susumu yokota should be paying you for all this work tolstoyed ;-) But i hope you won't migrate to another site now :-p We'd miss you here too much. Besides, there is still alot of work to do. Ask anyone here what the four most important idm-artist are, and they will probably say afx, ae, squarepusher and boc... you shouldn't rest until susumu is in that list ;-)

i studied german, english, and a little bit of japanese in high school.
got all good grades but i don't know if i'm actually good in any of them, i must make a lot of mistakes in english, and i wouldn't be able to make any conversation in german... not speaking about the japanese, i forgot all the kanji from last year... "je ne parle pas français." without the ?.
what? i don't know what you mean... oh god, i didn't fuck that one sentence up too did i? :-p It's supposed to mean "i don't speak french". It's not supposed to be a question, lol. Oh well... i best stay out of france and everything will be alright ;-)
And i think idm can mean alot of thing tolstoyed ;-) Albums like SAWII and Music is rotted one note are also considered idm after all. But yeah... it's great music, i don't mean to promote it, but i automatically start talking about the things i like :-) (i haven't even started a thread about Sakura (yet)).
Isn't speaking a language supposed to like riding a bike? (you never forget how to do it)... that's what my teachers always told me anyway. Maybe if you read a couple of sentences italian it will all come back to you ;-)... or maybe not.

about my italian-i can understand and read really good, but when it comes to talking im pretty lousy, not to talk about writing :)
i definitely need to read some italian again to get back into it
and those teachers of yours dont know what they're talking about-riding a bike... :)

Lol, there is no such thing as writing too much about good music ;-)
I always enjoy seeing someone passionate about something... and after all, your enthusiasm did persuade me to also buy this cd myself :-) Which is a good thing, right? (a very good thing!). I mean there's no way i would have ever gotten to know Susumu otherwise.
If you look at it like this... this mb is nothing but a bunch of people promoting music to each other ;-)
Anyway... just keep talking about him is all i'm trying to say. It worked for me, so you might also get other people to give yokota a listen :-)
"and those teachers of yours dont know what they're talking about"
hehe... i always suspected that ;-)

And yeah, now that you mention it... in a way i am sort of responsible for this thread i guess... altough i didn't anticipate tokyojo would make an entire new thread for those translations... but still...

hehe, woofer said the other day that he digs sakura aswell, and i think nacmat also ordered a copy for himself
its going well :)
"Which is a good thing, right? (a very good thing!). I mean there's no way i would have ever gotten
to know Susumu otherwise" isnt this just sad? so good music and this hard to get to know it, that is why i think most of electronic music doesnt get enough promotion (all the warp artists included)
and that about title translations is a nice idea-i really like them as well
now we must persuade tokyojo to translate other titles in japanese aswell :)

Oh cool, i haven't read where woofer says that, but indeed i noticed Nacmat has also ordered the cd... wonderful :-D
You're right about the promotion... but then again, this type of music is also hard to promote i think. Even if the recordlabel made expensive videos for these songs, MTV probably wouldn't play them... to unusual for the big audience. (and the recordlabel DID put the big sticker on Sakura, with all those quotes from the various reviews).
It is sad... but maybe this is just the way it's supposed to be. And it also has it charms, that you actually have to search to find this kind of music.
Websites like xltronic are actually the best promotion labels like warp could ever wish for ;-)
But i have to go to sleep now... it's already late...

but i guess japanese doesnt have much in common with italian hehe :)
