how do you discover new music?

(mostly)...

most of the bands i discover, i discover them because of
connections with other artists... like NIN kinda introduced
me to aphex twin, coil, einstürzende neubauten, 12 rounds,
marilyn manson, and aphex twin then introduced me to
squarepusher, plaid, autechre, etc...
or sometimes when i hear a band name on forums which sounds
good to me...
and sometimes when i see a beautiful cover art for a cd, i
try to remember the name and check out the artist :)

i never listen to radio...

Generally I read about them, or other people recommend them.
I then DL Mp3s and if I like them I buy the Cd/vinyl.

same as CeriJC.... and .....

...i have these associates called "freinds" who have all
sorts of wacky tastes and something new always grabs my
attention. For eg.. in work, a guy who´s in Mr. Bungle,
Faith no more and lesser metal crap, brought in a "Secret
Cheifs 3" CD.... new to me..

V Snares meets Tavlingh Singh meets FaithnoMore!!! quality

why buying when kazza is still alive?

if no-one would buy.. artists wouldn't release stuff anymore
.. by buying their stuff you show respect for the things
they do

i buy all my music original (xcept AB5 and MFM, they're on
CD-r)

Usually through online reviews, downloading mp3s from
Epitonic, or through browsing in my record store of choice
(they put these little descriptive stickers on everything).

Yep, even if I had a final scratch I'd still buy my fav.
stuff on original vinyl. MP3 quality is noticably less...

The internet, and ONLY the internet. This board has
enlightened me quite a bit, matter of fact.

And I may get heat for this, but I've got into quite a few
good rock bands through Rollingstone and similar magazines.
I used to buy a lot of music rags.

He is correct in a way. If we survive we will one day evolve
past money. I forgot who said money suggests poverty. But
not any time soon.

First of all, there's this mb.
from time to time I check (on slsk) some of the names that
are dropped here .

Second, there's the radio.
There's a program on studio Brussels with pretty good new
electronic music.
I tape it, look up their playlist, and search for the songs
on slsk.
There's also Radio Centraal, a local radio from Antwerp, but
they rarely announce what they are playing... :-/

Then there's the guy from the cdstore, who became some sort
of friend, and he knows what I like.
If there's a new release he thinks I might like, he tells
me, and then I listen to it in the shop.

I also go to secondhandstores, and buy some cheap cd's from
artists I heard of ,but never really checked out.
sometimes I'm lucky.. =o)

and there's also the summer festivals, who are a great
opporunity to check out artists you already heard of, or to
just discover new groups.

...and what I really like, I buy.

If I'm stuck for where to turn next, I always check out
other releases on the same record label as something I
like.... has to be good independent labels... like Warp,
Ninja Tune, Mo-Wax, Rephlex etc etc

I sometimes buy compilations from small labels to hear some
up coming artists (this is a bit hit n miss, but I
occasionally come across a gem :)

Most recent discovery: StormCrow (well I'd never heard of
them -and no-one else has AFAIK)... pretty good, dubby,
electronic, ambient, wierd - cool and you can tell its quite
a new artist (I hope it is anyway LOL)

Well i don't know about that...
It would be nice i agree, but i'm not sure how realistic it
is. The concept of money has been with us for so long... it
seems almost a part of human nature. I bet if we didn't
teach our children what money is, they would invent it
themselves soon enough.

But anyway, I presumed nexialism was only talking about
music :-)

there's actually no such things as money... each 'note'
simply says "I promise to pay the bearer the sum of
xxx"..... we just pass round I.O.U's all the time... :)
it's been awhile since we all had stashes of gold and silver
etc :)
