scratched cds

damn it, I hate it when CDs get scratched.

I had 2370894 out for a party, but when I go to put it on
today it skips all over the place. I turn it over only to
find out that it is scratched to buggery. That's another
£12 down the drain, as I can't reasonably live my life
without a daily dose of Fuck Toronto Jungle.

Scratches are bad :-/

One of my favourite songs ever is "losing my
religion" from R.E.M....
well... no prizes for guessing which track on my copy of
"Out of time" has a scratch and the track keeps skipping
:-(

"oh no i've said too much, i haven't said
enouououououououououououou...
"

i hate it! Why do cd's do that? My copy of OK Computer also
has a nasty scratch on it (from when i accidentally let it
slip from my fingers one day ;-)), but that one plays all
the tracks just fine.

You can barely see the scratch on Out Of Time, and yet there
it fucks up every single time i play it... wierd.

Hey recently i saw that radioactive man-cd in a store morton
:-p Funny looking at that tracklisting and seeing your name.

they scratch so easily... remember when they came out and
they were saying they were really tough. bollox. sometimes
if you get a soft cloth and wipe from the centre out it
works, as well as checking for drops of water / beer etc and
cleaning

If you're going to scratch stuff, I find vinyl works better.
Sorry, couldn't resist that one ;)

Try cleaning the CD- I've had some that were scratched so
badly 60% of the tracks skipped and after a thorough
cleaning only one or two tracks did.

CD-Rom drives have good error correction. Many times a CD
that may skip in your player wont in a CD-Rom drive so you
can rip it and back it up.

My Plan B album 'Cyber chords and sushi stories' won't play
in my normal CD player but works fine in my MP3CD player and
CD-Rom so I can rip and write a backup.

easier!

true, dvds are worse for scratches. I saw these plastic
adhesive protectors once, you stick them on the readable
side of dvds/cds and supposedly they can still be read, and
are scratch-resistant.

I can't help thinking what would happen if you accidently
got an air bubble while applying it.

I'm going to have to replace 2370894, I can't live with a
scratched cd... gah!

Some cds, especially early ones from the late 80's don't rip
properly at all in modern cd rom drives. I tried to rip Tom
Waits' Swordfishtrombones pressed in 1987 and no cd rom I
have (I have 9) will read it without errors. Yet my hi-fi
plays it fine. Even the playstation plays it fine. What's
with that?

I have a Sony CDU4811 CD-Rom and that will play anti-piracy
CDs fine as if it was normal for some reason. I like to get
older CD rom drives as they are normally much better then a
new 52X.

Have you tried reading it with a 2X or 4X? try using your
writer to rip it maybe? Some older CDs will only play in
slow drives. I had a 4X drive and I swear it was the fastest
I had used because it would read instantly instead of
spending 30 seconds getting up to a fast speed. PS is 4X I
think.

The CD-ROMs I have vary between regular CD-ROMs (several
makes), Ricoh CD re-writers, HP CD re-writers, LG DVD ROMs,
using Win XP, Win 98, Win95, Win2000. Using EAC. Ripping at
1x where the drive allows it.
Buffered burst read modes will read the CD quickly, but with
errors. EACs normal mode will read VERY slowly and still
produce errors. I gave up. I think I'll just buy it. I can
probably find old Tom Waits CDs for 3.99 new these days.

Ripping at software 1X is not the same as using a 1X or 2X
drive. If you see a 1X to 4X going cheap get it as you can
often rip tricky CDs in these. This is why the operation
system bares no impact on ripping, It's the drive that reads
the CD and the software only translates it to whatever.

Just because something is new don't make it better,
especially with CD-Rom drives. Manufactures used to put a
lot of effort into making them but now they can't afford to
as the market is flooded with 52X drives for under £10.

I know what you mean. I've tried CDROMs from years ago that
can't go faster than 4x and still no joy. The CD isn't
scratched at all, so I've no idea what's up. Some of my own
CDs suffer from the same problem. A have a triple CD
compilation called the Serious Road Trip that was on offer
in the NME years ago. Or maybe it was Melody Maker when it
was actually any good. Those CDs won't rip either, but I
think that's cos they were cheap :p

wow, you actually looked at my site? Cool :-)

It's all very old though... if i was still a student at the
artacademy i would change the site, but now that i
graduated, i don't have acces to the server anymore... damn!
(i'm actually surprised they've still kept it online for so
long).

My more recent work is much better imo ;-) But until i get
myself a scanner i can't put any of it online.

Oh and the shirts aren't available :-( Those bastards at
remy zero... i actually won the contest (and the prize would
be that the shirt was actually going to be produced), but
then i never heard from them again... grumble!

I have got a thousand stickers pressed with that little red
man that lost his arm ;-) You can have some of those in
exchange for your record-collection :-p (when you die
ofcourse... btw, are terminal diseases known to occur in
your family? And do you smoke? Drink? Like to drive fast?
:-p Just out of curiosity ofcourse).

But anyway, thanks for looking! And Thanks! for your
kind words :-)

and btw: i don't know those lone swordsmen either ;-)

If you have the means, I highly recommend burning copies of
all your cds for travelling, and leaving the originals at
home. That way you have a backup.

Actually, DVDs are more resistant to actually being affected
by scratches. dvd has a more powerful error correction
system than compact discs.

Here's how to fix scratched CDs... toothpaste! rub a
little into the affected area and smooth it out. remove all
excess. leave for a minute et voila. the toothpaste has
almost the same refractive index as the cd material, and
should make it readable.........also toothpaste is great for
removing spikes from your feet if you tread on sea urchins.
this wonderful substance can also be used to clean teeth or
something, but im not too sure about that.

Have you ever tried that yourself?

Because i've read about that too, tried it... and nothing
happened :-(

Well it didn't make things worse, but it didn't fix the
scratch either.

offline dave_g from United Kingdom on 2003-01-24 13:59 [#00527188]

yep ive tried the cd fix and it DOES work. its worth trying
a couple of times. i had to wipe it off and try again about
4 times, but now the cd is fine, but its very hit and miss.
it can fix most problems, but it cant recreate the data
unfortunaltely, what it does is it keeps the laser on target
as it searches for the data. when it sees the toothpaste, it
interprets it as no data, and skips on to the next section
which has the redundancy data, i.e the same bit of track.
without the toothpaste, it is more enclined to look at the
scratch, read half, get confused, not bother with redundancy
data and read the scratch, and so on.

If you are sure the cd has no scratches... it could also be
a problem of the cd-player :-/

I've already gone through 3 cd-players so far in the last
couple of years... in the end they all started to act funny
and started skipping cd's for no reason. (and it would also
take them forever to "locate" the cd, so to speak... i mean
you put the cd in the tray, close the tray... and normally
within a few seconds the display says how many songs there
are on the cd etc. But when my cd-players were almost at the
end of their lives, it would sometimes take them like 1 or 2
minutes to find out how many songs were on there... it
sucked).
If you also have had this happen to you... you have a
serious problem with your cd-player i'm afraid.

see i told you all. :P oh ye of little faith ;) it works a
treat doesn't it. i would recomend that you burn yourself a
copy because the toothpaste can come off when you least
expect it, which incidently is always when you've just
finsihed off that tube of toothpaste as well.

well the toothpaste rubs off if you leave beer cans on them
and the beer leaves a little round mark on the cd, so you
rub it off when its still wet and then the toothpaste comes
off as well. normally it is quite durable. i think your
