IDM is getting commercial ... a bit

Well, here in Sweden at least. Not very commercial, but you
hear it here and there, esp. in the commerical-breaks on tv.
There's a channel in Sweden Tv 3, and when the commercial
break comes you hear a jungle-break-tune, and there's also a
commercial for, ehm, what is it called, cooking tools?
(kastruller och sånt) and you hear a somehow IDM:ish tune,
with Vespertine-sounding drums, and in Cartoon Network and
such you often hear dn'b-breaks during the commercials.
Yes.

you're right.

On dutch television you also hear cool idm-ish sounds all
the time.

Well, I'd say this is a good thing. It prooves that IDM's
not crap-music, and that other people like this kind of
music. A friend of mine called my music-taste dårhusmusik
(hm, lunatic-assylum-music), and this might prove him wrong.

I haven't seen anything like that on TV?! They are usually
using d&b jingles in commercials and trailers... but even
then - d&b is already commercial and has next to nothing to
do with what I define 'electronic music'.

Loads of TV series trailers in the UK use IDM- even big well
known programs, not obscure late night ones:

BoC, AT, N.O.W. are all ones I've heard...

"Well, I'd say this is a good thing. It prooves that
IDM's not crap-music,

Yes i like it too! Perhaps it will interest more people in
this beautiful music :-)

And on a more selfish note: it's also just nicer to hear
some good music during commercials, rather than some boring
muzak :-p

I heard an IDM beat during an anti-drug commercial, from the
same campaign as the aphex anti-drug commercial, Then I
heard it in an ad for Xerox, then today on the news during
the lotto numbers.

I cant fgure out who its from and its driving me nuts!!!!!
Anyone know the tune im talking about?

Would anyone like to take a shot at identifying this track,
if you identify it correctly you'll always have a place in
my heart.

I did like the use of Aphex tracks on Film Four... they were
advertising 'Casino' and showing clips of Joe Pesci. They'd
play some 'Avril 14th' and it would say "Nice Joe" and then
'Cock Ver 10' (the loud bit at the end) would come blasting
in and it'd say "BAD Joe" :D

first, I dont consider jungle / DnB IDM.

second, I dont consider the IDM audience a group of people
that can easily be seduced by marketing

third, how many 'ordinary top 40 listening' people do you
think can listen a decent afx or ae track from the beginning
to the end without getting insane in the head or bored?

I dont worry :)

i think they use electronic stuff cause it is more easy (and
cheaper) to do (one person making it) then having to record
guitars drums etc... for rock music. and it's just so hip ;)

ive heard BoC, brothamstates, aphex, on ads there's prolly
lots more but i have a device called a remote control which
is used to avoid advertising at almost any cost even if it
does mean missing kid for today played over the top of a car
driving through the mountains

the tunes are used on all these adverts, but theres no fear
of the artists becoming mainstream.. only people who
previously knew the songs will know who they're by its not
like theres any credits saying music composed by... most
people probably think they were just made for the adverts...
perahps thats why the advertisers like using them so much-
if u used 4example a madonna song, peoples first reaction
would be ooo its maddonna, not oo thats a nice tune, i must
buy X product...
rambling now.....

and another example -- sabres of paradise on the vodafone ad

"most people probably think they were just made for the
adverts...
"

Well actually, if people here a nice song during a
commercial, lots of them try to find out who wrote it. (For
instance there is this dutch site, that lists the origin of
lots of tunes used in recent commercials.

It's a great way for a song to be heard by lots of people.

But (here we go again), why are so many people afraid of idm
becoming more commercial?? It doesn't change the music
whether only we listen to an artist, or millions of people
all over the world....

Never going to happen, people always say that its going to
be the next big thing. People have been saying this since
1992.....

I think its going to be one of those things that will always
stay underground to some extent

Who knows though, Ive seen stranger things happen

mainstrream thing maybe the most bizarre thing that i will
have everr seen.

How do you mean the next big thing anyway? You mean Aphex
Twin signing up with EMI alone? I don’t think that would
happen. What does happen is people acquire ideas and
implement it into something not so challenging, your
standard chart type sound. Maybe a genre will spring from
it. Compare House to HardHouse for example. Or also compare
‘Windowlicker’ to ‘Music’ by Madonna like the beats
and cuts. A basic form of acquired inspiration.

Used a lot for car adds.

Aphex SAW I used to be played continuously on Gary Rhodes
cooking program.... i suspect because of its 'stylised
dsign' type qualities (and also because it sounds cool and
modern)

Just watch any gardening/cookery/DIY type program on telly
and you'll hear some pretty cool stuff :)

I think: the more the merrier! people should apprecieate
this, the musci industry (well, the pop industry) has tried
to move into the DnB, IDM lately, but I bet it'll get bored
once its raped the scene and move onto something else...
like country.... or bangra... actually, bangra is everywhere
nowadays ;))

By "next big thing" I mean, hering IDM tunes on top 40
stations regularly and seeing music videos for them all over
the place and seeing "IDM" merchandise and what not, thats
what I meant, yea. I wasnt really talking directly at you
anus, NICE TO SEE YOU BACK HERE THOUGH! Where you been at?
seemed like you been gone for a while. Windowlicker is
NOTHING like that music madonna track, nothing like it at
all, wow , but I totally agree, people will get influenced
by the "IDM" genra and try and encorperate it into main
stream music

I really dont know how I feel about that though, I guess it
could be considered as a good thing, and perhaps open up
people to listen to more experimental music, but I dont
know

Experimental music i think is something that can never be
marketed and commercialized. Thats why they call it
experimental, experimenting with new things and broadening
peoples vision of what music is, in very abstract ways

offline redRummy from Brighton (United Kingdom) on 2003-01-23 14:01 [#00525658]

i wouldn't worry anyway, most people would run screaming
from most experimental music (cf Whitehouse etc)

hahah hering

its getting hot in herre.... w00t! now take off all your
clothes....

I think electronic music is the future tough, I think maybe
100 years from now everything is going to be made digitally
and really great things are going to happen with technology
in the digital audio aspect. It'll be neat to see what
happens

Crusify me if you must, but sometimes I really like those
commercial tunes, especially the Cartoon Network interludes
in toonami, whoever makes those tunes does a great job IMO.
I hate the way sports stations use it though, like the amen
break 24/7 for action shots of a recorded game, with cheesy
bass lines... ack
