aye.. more people claiming they hate the entire genre of hip
hop after just hearing some of the popular crap..

as someone said before.. its just like hating electronic
music after just hearing eiffel 65 and fatboy slim.. and
there are people who do.. you've probably heard plenty of
people say 'electronic music?? i hate that techno shit! boom
tsh boom tsh boom tsh'

c'mon guys.. you dont have to like it.. just dont be so
closed minded about it...

and as far as its relation to 'idm'.. i'd say its a big
influence on the artists who are a big influence on the
genre (ie. autechre, aphex, boc, plaid, countless others...)
of course they've mixed the influence with other things..
but hip hop is definitely a big part of 'idm's family tree

surrounded: the difference between hip hop and rap is: hip
hop is the genre.. rap is the vocal style common to the
genre of hip hop.. its one of the things that makes up hip
hop... i've never understood why some people make a
distinction between them as if they're two different things

RAP is what you see on MTV. Hip-Hop has not been established
in the mainstream yet, You need to expose yourself to more
legitamate "hi-hop''

Think of it this way
Rap is to Jay-Z as Hip-hop is to Jurassic 5

Surounded: the Beasties definetly qualify as hip-hop. btw,
they're not from Brooklyn as they claim to be, they're from
my neighborhood. Im gonna be the next great outta here as
well.

hm... okay. That clarifies things a little. So everything
that involves rapping, is basically hiphop?

I got confused because there also appear to be all sorts of
subgenres like gangster-rap, eastcoast-rap and...? Well
actually i don't know all the names ;-) But i was just under
the impression they were 2 different things.

Also:
Who is....
"<------him"
in your avatar?

Disliking an entire genre of music seems absurd to me. How
can you say you don't like something that you've never heard
before? It's not like all hiphop-albums sound the same!

There are many people on this board who like BoC, and
dislike Squarepusher (or vice versa, or insert other artists
if you like), and yet they are both considered IDM....

no no, 'rapping' is the unofficial noun for rhyming your
lyrics.

the genre RAP is mostly an overgeneralization of the two
genres. But aslo serves as a catagory for Nelly jay-z and
tupac

Hip hop I guess you could say has become a subgenre of RAP.
Even though they originally meant the same thing.

You can totally tell the difference.
Download anything by Del Tha Funky Homosapien. Hes the best
lyriscist out there and his work defines hip-hop in my
opinion, his beats are by dan the automator. Try out 'At the
Helm' or 'Wacky World of Rapid Transit'. Trust me the
difference is very evident.

hip hop is a term used to describe the culture (for instance
graffiti is part of hip hop culture but certainly wont fit
into any musical genre). Rap is a 'singing' (for want of a
better word) style.

i urge people to check out 8pt. agenda by herbaliser

Yeah... DJ Shadow, i've been meaning to give his music a
listen. Must admit i've never heard a single note of any of
his tracks :-o

There are sooo many cd's i still want to check out someday
;-) I don't think i'll live long enough to listen to
everything i would want to listen to!

But okay... so what about the Wu-Tang Clan? What genre would
they be? I like some of their songs alot.

And (i just know half the board is going to disagree with me
here ;-)), i also think some of Eminem's songs are really
great. Without Me... The Real Slim Shady... i like that sort
of songs, his crazy style.

Glass_eater said:

"comon theyre always talking about money, cars, bitches,
their coolness, etc.... imean its just extremely
boring
"

This is what i don't like about alot of the rapmusic that i
see on MTV. And i think Eminem is really different in his
subjects. Especially the 2nd and the 3rd album, where he
just talks about everything that's happened to him after he
became succesful. In a very original way... I like that...
not enough to actually buy his cd's, but i think it's really
amusing to follow his career on mtv :-)

i used to be someone who didn't like hip-hop, mostly cos i
assumed it was 'this' or 'that' and didn't give it a chance.

once i listened i realized how timely and relevant the
LYRICS were, and how i had misjudged the genre because of a

try a smattering of suggested songs (there are lots that
have been suggested on this MB) and give it another try!

All the ppl claiming they don't like hip-hop becuz the beats
sound the same or claiming the lyrics dont mean anything
need to get their heads examined.
You seriously didn't even put in the slightest effort to
actually listen to it or find some REAL quality hiphop (of
which there is plenty), or else your opinion wouldn't be
like that. It's mostly Dutch people who stubbornly stick to
thinking that hiphop is either I say the hiphop, hibididby
grandmaster flash kool moe dee kinda stuff or nigga
motherfucker i kill blablalba.
They label an entire genre based on this shallow impression
of a musical style that has an incredibly broad range and
has influenced almost every other musical style in positive
ways and major artists in the music industry have been
influenced by it as well. I don't think I need to mention
Richard D James.
And yes there are a plethora of choices if you want to hear
intelligent lyrics.
And sure you may hear them say nigga or modafokka in some of
their lyrics, but if you grow up in a neighbourhood where
they all say "gosh",
and you would be on the mic, without doubt you would use
"gosh" in your lyrics too.
So instead of basing your opinions on shitty RnB video's
(yes you read it right, it ain't even hiphop what you see on
TV),
go to a record store and check out some of the more
underground cats out there.
Check - Gangstarr, old wu-tang, group home, talib kweli, mos
def, anything on rawkus label actually, check stuff from
battle axe records and then come back with a valid review.

oh that's just ridiculous! Saying that everyone would like
HipHop if they just gave it a serious try, is just as stupid
as people saying they don't like any HipHop without having
heard much of it. (not to mention saying something such as
most people born in the netherlands are prejudiced about hip
hop... :-/)

I could write a post similar to yours about country music.
Do you like country-music? If you don't, you obviously
didn't put in even the slightest effort to actually listen
to it, or otherwise your opinion wouldn't be like that.
Country music has been at the root of zillions of other
styles of music and blah blah blah...

Every genre of music has something to be said for it. And
with every genre of music you tend to discover it through
the artists that are somewhat more mainstream... and only if
you like what you hear there, will you start to search a
little deeper. Nobody starts out with listening to the most
obscure and underground artists of a genre.

surrounded, before you get all offensive on me, I said your
opinion wouldn't be like that. That doesn't mean that they
would all like hiphop all of a sudden, but it does mean that
the shallow comments would cease, comments such as: hiphop
sucks they aint saying nothing, or they only rap about money
cars and bitches.

Moreso, I didn't say hiphop was at the root of of styles of
music, I said it has influenced almost every musical style
in some way, and it has.

I am indifferent to country music, since I don't know much
about it.
So if someone would ask me about it I wouldn't start saying:
It's all a bunch of yankee doodledoo.
In fact I wouldn't state any opinion about it if it was

That's the whole point, people here are responding to this
thread without having proper knowledge, and that's why I

"surrounded, before you get all offensive on me"

heh, it's a bit late for that ;-)
Sorry, i got a little carried away. When re-reading it my
comment sounded more offensive than i had intented.

"or they only rap about money
cars and bitches.
"

Well i'm convinced there are MANY hiphop-artist that don't
rap about these shallow subjects. But the fact remains that
also alot of them do. When looking at your average
hiphop-video on mtv, one can't help but feel that they are
all very materialistic and shallow. And since most of the
artists you mentioned don't get shown much on television, i
don't think it's that strange people think that is
all hiphop is about. I mean they see those videos, the
veejay tells them: "this is hiphop"... how are they supposed
to know there is also more out there?

I don't really know much about country music either ;-) But
i do remember reading somewhere that that is in fact at the
root of most styles of music today.

But ehr... yeah. All i'm really saying is you can't blame
people for not knowing something. I'm sure there was also a
time in your life when you had not started listening to
hiphop yet.

The stuff you get to see on MTV or TMF, that is what we call
RnB, and yes it sucks ass idd. Ja rule, Jay-Z, Nelly etc.
that is not hiphop. The main complaint is that this form of
music gets confused with hiphop, just because a guy raps in
it.
But idd surrounded, the majority doesn't know that. But the
point I'm stressing here is that if you don't know a thing
about the genre, you shouldn't slag it off but instead
refrain from responding to the thread or get some know how
about it before slagging it off.
It's all fair if you'd say: "Well I know hiphop from Public
Enemy to WuTang to Eminem but I think it really sucks!"
That's fine if you feel that way about it. It just ain't
"your thing" then. But at least you build the opinion from
listening to a wide variety of hiphop within the genre.

Eminem, yes he makes hiphop, and he's also a very gifted
MC.
It's also bs to forbid a white man to have a go at hiphop or
to slag him of for being into it, because it's supposed to
be black music. Positive discrimination is still
discrimination and therefore sucks by definition.

this is something my BF wanted me to post in response to
what you've said!

"X-tomatic, while i appreciate you sticking up for hip-hop,
i'm alarmed by your patent snobbishness. it pains me to see
educated hip-hop listeners thumb their nose at the majority.
you're saying ja rule, jay-z, and yes, even nelly, "aren't
hip-hop" ONLY because you don't like them. i think if you
were to be more honest with yourself and us then you'd
realize they certainly are a part of hip-hop, whether you
like it or not. yes, nelly and ja rule set themselves apart
from hip-hop with all their singing, but they still rap and
their music, if not hip-hop, is what? salsa? reggae? face
it, their music is by definition hip-hop, just
commercialized.

as for jay-z, he catches a lot of flak from us hip-hop
critics, and most of it is merited. however, aside from
eminem, he has to be the most talented rapper on MTV, BET,
and the radio right now. true, he has an extremely limited
range of topics--money and all the luxuries it buys, pretty
women, his reputation and success, and replies to his
critics (such as us)--but you can't help but notice his
talent. maybe he doesn't have much to talk about (although
i'd say he raps about a lot more topics than ja rule or
nelly for sure) but his delivery and flow are off the hook.
i don't have enough fingers and toes to count the
expressions he's coined that have influenced everyone from
his listeners to every other rapper, including our beloved
"underground" rappers from talib kweli to dead prez (and
even the white emcees), nor can i ever hope to count all the
rappers that have been influenced by his various styles. he
changes his flow a lot between songs; a lot more than any
other rapper on the radio or MTV. and his producers are
usually top-notch as well; there's a reason
non-materialistic rappers like mos def, kweli, dead prez,
pharoahe monch, and more are hiring kanye west for their
albums.

anyway, i'm not trying to bust your balls since it's good to
have someone stick up for hip-h
