I need to do a presentation on (what-they-call) IDM. The bulk of it will be explaining how crap the name is, but i need some artists/tracks that are VERY early idm, like back in the Mixmaster Morris days. Can anyone recommend some? thank you

I have invented a new abbreviation to replace IDM. It's UEEB, and it stands for Unlistenable Experimental Electronic Bollocks.
Try early Speedy J (Ginger, Pepper), Black Dog (Bytes), The Orb (you know the one), Orbital (Brown, Green), FSOL (Cascade), Scanner (Scanner1,2), Spooky (Gargantuan)... I guess when you go back far enough "IDM" becomes "techno" so when do you start classing stuff as IDM?

you could use the Artificial Intelligence compilation... some tracks like Autechre - Crystal, The Egg; and some early early aphex like Digeridoo, Analogue Bubblebath I

therre is no genre called idm - only a reaction to other music a very consertvative and anal message baord type thing set up to discuss the aphex twin primarily - autechre aphex etc are a natural; extention of the things they listened to ie techno - eg derrick may /drexcitya /kevin saunderson / juan aitkins chicago acid and house - ie mr fingers /trax records /bam bam etc new york house and brooklyn music ie nu groove/muto and bones and todd terry .. as well as the progression of this music thru drum and bass , hardcore , garage etc + the further listening of more academic musc and other types of music that use technology ... idm don't mean shit to anyone aprt from the people that started that lweb list whenever it was back in the early 90's

techno - or the name techno ws coined in detroit - house and acid started in chicago - instead of learning off this bunch of amateurs why don't you do a goggle search around the subject - you might even find some music you enjoy :)

no acid ws the sound coming from a tb 303 house music comes from the name of a club in chicago - can't remeber the name of it but it's got house in it innit - they're not really separable genres cos acid and house were made and listened to by the same groups of people at the same time and acid and house trackswere released on the same records etc --
acidis just that 303 noise

not really cos it has no specific characteristics - it's just what people chose to call a handful of groups in the early ninetees and it's kinda stuck with those groups and labels efc
