I am confused here... at amazon it says its released in
1996 with 18 tracks and the one I got from amazon is from
1993 and 11 tracks on it

bytes is definately before 96. there are 11 tracks, and

I think it's shit but loads of people like it. Ask
revpersona when he comes on to explain why it's so good, he
loves it.

Spanners THE BLACK DOG PUP1MC Cassette Warp Records 1995
Spanners THE BLACK DOG PUP CD1 1xCD Warp Records 1994
Spanners THE BLACK DOG PUP LP1 2x12" Warp Records 1994

There are also promos around.

As for the tracks. Various "bolts" have been inserted
between some of the tracks to create a seamless stream of
music. Sometimes they are listed - sometimes they are not.

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2003-01-22 11:37 [#00523990]

Both Bytes and Spanners are awesome. The "double tracks" on
Bytes are:
4. Phil1 (on Spanners they're called Bolts)
4b. Focus Mel - Atypic
4c. Phil2
5. Olivine - Close Up Over
5b. Phil3
7. Phil4
7b. Yamemm - Plaid
8. Phil5
8b. Fight the hits - Discordian Popes
8c. Phil6
10. Phil7
10b. Jauqq - Close Up Over

I wrote these down a long ago and there might be errors.

All the releases in between the Artificial Intelligence

Incunabula is the sexiest by far :)

03 Xeper: Carceres Ex Novum 6:43
04 Echo Mike: Phil(1) 1:00

i disagree with this album not sounding dated, i think it
does. as is the whole 'articifial intelligence' movement
from warp (ie autechre - incunabula, ai1, ai2). but this
isnt a bad thing at all, i still enjoy listen to bytes a
lot, especially while driving.

If someone who never heard electronic music, asked me to
give them an album of electronic music, Bytes would be it.
The sounds are a weee bit outdated but they are still badass
for the time they we're made in. As for the songs
themselves, you can hear some great compositions filled with
originality in there.

Right now Merck and Heart are my fav tracks.

Pigfarmer, it's all Black Dog. I think they have the
different names out of legal reasons. Ken Downie also said
somewhere that they always wrote the stuff in different
constellations. I'm not sure who did what, but I quess Plaid
is self explanatory.

-P

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2003-01-23 14:47 [#00525730]

All the names were used by Ed, Andy, and Ken. From what I
gather they all wrote seperate tracks from various EPs and
threw them all on Bytes.

For instance, Ed wrote all the Balil and Close, Up, Over
tracks, while Andy was using Plaid and Tura.

While the album was first released in 92' many of the tracks
on their are from before then.

Now if only Ed would release some new/unreleased Balil
material.

i love plaid
but i have never been able to get into Bytes or any other
black dog stuff really.

i guess it just sounds too General MIDI to me. of course,
for its time it was pretty cutting edge.

the bjork stuff they did was dope though. i like that
little ep with the twin bjorks on the cover, what was it
called? it had that song with bjork going "ooha ooh" on it.
i gotta go dig it out.

now this is weird... ' _ '

on Warp, the tracklisting is:
1. Object Orient
2. Caz
3. Carceres Ex Novum
4. phil(1)
5. Focus Mel
6. phil(2)
7. Olivine
8. phil(3)
9. Clan (Mongol Hordes)
10. phil(4)
11. Yamemm
12. phil(5)
13. Fight The Hits
14. phil(6)
15. Merck
16. phil(7)
17. Jauqq
18. 3/4 Heart

on Tigersushi and AMG it is the same without the phils...

BUT on amazon.de, there is a version with:

1. Object Orient
2. Close, Up, Ever
3. Zeper
4. Atypic
5. Close, Up, Ever
6. F.A.O.
7. Yamemm
8. Fight The Hits
9. Balil
10. Close, Up, Ever
11. Balil

from "Warp (ZOMBA)"! what is this?!

(there is also another one in which the tracklisting isn't
shown, nor the label, it just says it's in import... and
also out-of-print ones with the "normal"
11-track-tracklisting...)
