I've got tons of MP3s, and I've copied all my best CDs (all
Beatles at 320kbs of course) to my harddrive because I HATE
CDs. And now my listening is SO erratic, because thousands
of songs are a click away, instead of having to go over to
the CD player and put something in, seek out the track,
etc...

I know some artists ''construct'' an album to flow and all
that, tell a story, songs within a context, but I just can't
listen to music in that way anymore. I remember before I had
a CPU, listening to Dark Side of the Moon thinking ''what
the fuck, I'll bounce around the album any way I want, I
don't care. I don't want to listen to the Great Gig in the
Sky right now''. They could have arranged the songs any way
they wanted and make an argument for it still ''flowing''
and telling a story or keeping a theme. I like individual
tracks.

So MP3s are great for me, because I rarely even listen to
two songs in a row from the same ARTIST, let alone the same
track listing or album. I just bounce back and forth so
erraticly and randomly depending on what I want to hear THIS
SECOND, AFTER THE CURRENT SONG ENDS.

I know a lot of people like to sit down with an album and
digest it as the ''artist intended'', and that's cool, but
it ain't for me, never was.

And people tell me that I'm ''missing out'' or some shit...
wha? No, I enjoy music more than ever now that the
convenience to suit my random tastes is right here. I do NOT
like sitting down with one album, ever, never have. I'm a
''kinetic'' music listener. :-) I don't make playlists
because I hate knowing what's coming up, it's totally
improvised, and often there's some insane pattern to my
listening in my subconsious. Making my own mental albums.

Rant over.

Anyone else here that doesn't ever give a shit about albums?
Or am I psychotic. Concept albums in particular piss me
off.

I'm completely the opposite of you, Ophecks. I love a hard
format like CD, because it makes me feel like I own the
music and have given proper respect to the artist who put it
out.

I also appreciate ALBUMS, not just individuals songs.
Albums, well-constructed, inspired and well-paced musically
do much more than any mix can (though I can appreciate a
good mix).

I notice that when ever I go to my friends house and I play
cds, I cant sit down and listen to Two tracks from the same
cd consecutively. Im either flippin around or frantically
switching cds, wich takes foorrreeevverrrr.. Cds are
definetly a pain in the ass now.

Ha, ok, check your mail. I'm as random with my e-mail as I
am with my music.

And Dawheeze, I like CDs, I've got a lot of them and they
make me feel warm and fuzzy inside but now they're all
collecting dust because I can't STAND being limited to 70
minutes of the same artist!

But there's exceptions- Abbey Road, that muthafucka FLOWS.
The Pink Floyd ''concept album'' shit turns me right off,
though.

Different strokes for different folks. :-)

This is annoying for me because I'm in a constant state of
indecision... making up my mind every 3 or 4 minutes.

...if u dont like them as a whole, or like one track at a
time more, then i guess youre not missing much

im not a big fan of playlists either, im always choosing now
what i want to hear as the next few songs

but i like to listen to entire good albums from good
artists... if the songs fit together nicely they dont have
to have some unifying concept beyond that to be an
acceptable format of listening organization for me

albums much if ever, just a track of this, a track of

a whole for 'full effect'

I used to have everything ripped to MP3, but they've all
been deleted and now I only listen to CDs.

I can see the appeal in having everything on your computer,
just randomly playing, but it would irritate me to have CDs
that I couldn't rip because of copy protection. I want to be
able to listen to all my music in the same format.

mixed album, by itself. theres no empty intro or ending
fading away, its one thick song. if that makes sence.

sometimes a track has a meaning on its own... but other
times its meaning is richer when understood as a part of the
whole (the album) in this case you are missing out that
extra meaning.

but its just a matter of what you like

i like putting my full mp3 library in random mode...
but iTunes kinda sucks for randomness, with 700+ tracks it
still falls too often on the same tracks - they'd have to
correct their random imo...

Ophecks, I'm in the same situation as you (every song at the
touch of a button), but I still listen mostly to albums, not
individual tracks. I also have a few custom playlists here
and there.

I actually thought that I would get away from the album
concept, but it never happened.

I totally disagree with you there ophecks ;-)

It always makes me feel weird to listen to a song "out of
context"... it's still the same song i guess, but it just
doesn't feel right disconnected from the album it came from.
I always listen to entire albums...

I bet if you just listen to individual tracks randomly...
there must be certain tracks (piano's from druqks (or
lornaderek), or the short BoC-tracks that don't get played
much at all?? Or do you actually make the effort to put on
less then one minute of BoC? (something like "ready lets
go"... god... i can't imagine to that song without
"music is math" following immediately after it :-p)

Funny, today I listened Circular Flexing by itself, as a
stand alone track away from it's album-brethen, and I lubbed
it. :-)

''I bet if you just listen to individual tracks randomly...
there must be certain tracks (piano's from druqks (or
lornaderek), or the short BoC-tracks that don't get played
much at all?? ''

True! But I DO give every track a fair shot at impressing me
and growing on me (Nannou2, which I thought was boring, but
I kept listneing to it occasionally and it grew) , and if it
doesn't (Lornaderek), I may never listen to it again...
because I don't need to and I don't WANT to. I listen to
music literally every waking moment... it ALL gets heard,
sooner or later, and I weed out the weaklings. I don't like
hearing an album's weak tracks... God, you'd have to tie me
up to force me to listen to some of the Wall's filler
tracks.

And it's not random in the sense that I actually use the
RANDOM option or I just click on whatever. It's just that
after every song, EVERY song, I decide what I want to listen
to based on... whatever.

It's not totally random, there are patterns... certain songs
may remind me of others and make me want to listen to
something that sounds similar, etc. So you'll get a bunch of
sounds that sound like they're from the same... uh,
foodgroup. :-)

I dunno... this is the way I like to hear music, my own
wacky mixes.

In nature there are patterns. Graph any system and patterns
will emerge.

but anyway

I like sitting down in my room with my good cans on and just
digesting an album in my leather chair. Sometimes I just
like one song at a time, but for the most part I'm a
cd/album guy. Something about a great whole (rather
than just parts) makes it worthwhile for me. On that note, a
song could be worthwhile in itself, (a lot are) but I look
at an album as a team. Some members are better at this or
that but they all compliment each other and without that
they will fall.

"I may never listen to it again...
because I don't need to and I don't WANT to.
"

hehe... yes, can't argue with you there ;-) If this way of
listening makes you happy, by all means continue to do so.

The little tracks... like lornaderek. Ofcourse i do not
think that "song" is particularly beautiful. It's just an
anwseringmachine-message... it's not intended to be
beautiful to listen to. It just works in the album-context.

But having an album with only fantastic moments would
perhaps be a little bit too much... or something. I always
remember a documentary i saw about Björk, who said you
sometimes need something ugly, to make the beautiful things
stand out more. For me it works exactly like that. On all my
favourite albums there are certain tracks or parts of songs
that i don't like... but i feel like the album needs those
aswell, to become more balanced perhaps.

I can't imagine listening to a BoC album, that would only
have the songs that last longer than 2 minutes. I am always
so overwhelmed by the beauty of those long songs, that i
need the short little interludes to "calm me down" so to
speak, and prepare me for the next beautiful song.

I still think you're missing out on alot, listening to music
the way you do ;-) But it's probably just a matter of
personal preference. As long as i don't have to listen to
your crazy mix of songs together with you, you may skip as
many tracks as you like :-p

Usually I listen to music the same way Ophex does. I don't
think I miss out on anything due to taking songs out of
their context because I put the songs together into a new
context every time I sit down to listen to music. It's like
compiling a new album for myself every time.

a little bit off topic...
but since coming here, and getting soulseek, its so easy to
check new music makers/ bands by just downloading them.. But
taking the songs out of context, from an album/compilation,
and not knowing anything about the creator of the song
(usually someone says hey, susumu yokota is great! check the
song 'kodomotachi'... so its downloaded, added to the ever
growing playlist..) i

ummmm.. what i'm trying to say is. . . .

there is sooo much music out there, and i'm just not so
easiy impressed anymore! which is such a scary thought....
i'll be doing the dishes and some venetian snares or merzbow
is playing, and it'll go right past me... Doesn't shock or,
impress me... i don't want that to happen when when i'm
listening to my Come To Daddy ep

can anyone understand this? and maybe make it a bit
clearer...? my english is not so good... >.<

Yeah... that makes sense. Overexposure to music. You're just
downloading too much :-p

You should just delete all your filesharing programs ;-)

But you won't, so then let me suggest you to atleast
download less music for awhile, and give the songs
that you do download a chance to sink in.

Or ofcourse you could go out and buy a proper cd :-D For
instance the album "sakura" where the song kodomotachi comes
from. When you've spent some money on it, you'll be more
motivated to keep listening to it.
