Does anyone know exactly WHEN Aphex Twin decided to do only DJ-sets, and why?

As do I, you'd think since he doesnt visit America all that often he'd give us a live show when he does come here. Richard djing from a laptop is a truely a dissapointing thing to pay money to see. its really as if Im paying money to see richard drink soda and stare at a monitor.

well dolleater, it makes so much sense that a comment like
"Richard djing from a laptop is a truely a dissapointing thing to pay money to see" could ONLY be made by an american, and hence the reason he does fuck all gigs over there, the vast majority of you idiots simply would not 'get it'. The laptop dj set is all he is ever gonna do from now on, he sequences live, so in effect he IS playing live. what else is he gonna do. And just to reconfirm, the aphex DJ experience, playing live or not, is simply incredible, pummeling ragga and spazzed up breakcore divided by heavy duty acid. none of your so called west coast artists could ever hope to match nevermind better the sheer artistry and power of an rdj performance. so fuck off and come back when you aren't a stupid american cunt.

well, i guess there is some difference in rdjs djing and other ppls djing
my guess is that the organizer of the gig must make a deal with other artists not to make to much effort so that rdj gets all the attention :)
just kidding, but his performance is usually better than others performing along, could be just something mentaly, but i like it one way or another

Best gig ever was Squarepusher at a club I can't remember just off Bishopsgate in the City (of London). That was Squarepusher in his prime just as he was getting hyped and getting big. Mind blowing.
Biggest dissapointment was Cylob same venue but the neighbours had asked the music to be turned down so people were actually talking over the music majorly irritating.

I'd pay to see him sit on front of laptop. I just wish he'd do some shows here. Hell, I'd go most of the way across the counrty to see him live. ATP was a little out of my budget last year. But damnit, if all I get is him sitting in front of laptop, then thats all I get and I won't complain.

Never seen Aphex live, on both occassions that I was supposed to go to an Aphex gig both were cancelled. One was due to some bullshit excuse by him and the other was the promoters fault it was some London park festival can't remember the name though.

i saw him 5 times and here´s how he appeared
1. SAW2 live gig, dublin behind a curtain!.. but had gymnastic beardy dancers in tracksuits (yes! to SAW2 tunes!) 1999
2. Rephlex Disco Assault System ' Dead granny gig, Dublin, 2000
Very visible with a dozen mates... all dressed up(Cylob as a banana), and jap school girls on stage too! RDJ shook the fist loads
3. Sonar 2001 Visible and centered but concentrated on the equipment....very pro.
4. Dublin 2001 Braindance tour.. very visible, fist-shakin again, up for it!
5. London, Warp Hackney gig 2001.. sat behind luke viber passing him records and tweaking electronics, visible from the front, drinking beer
all mad!

1. Munich December 2002 Mental drum'n'bass dj set from his VAIO. piccies: here as you can see, tucked away in a corner. Everyone was going mental. It was fucking unbelievable. I would have prefered to have seen Bogdan before Aphex as he wasn't a patch on him but was still able to keep the vibe going on, just about.
