Aphex's old stuff is better than the new stuff....discuss

uh, yes and no, i agree that stuff like ageispolis, ptolemy,
alberto balsalm etc are better than some of his newer stuff
but what about bucephalus bouncing ball, or windowlicker?

By God Yes!!

After I Care there is something missing, the presence is
gone, the darkness is gone, the trax had an importance about
them, totally abstract. The later stuff has expert
programming, but it sounds empty, (I'm talking pretentious
shite here and I know it!).

I like about four trax on the RDJ album. I recently sold
off alot of my vinyl because I was so pissed off with the
way his music had went. His older stuff will never be
topped in my mind.

I kind of agree. I like the simplicity of some older tracks
-- pure energy -- but that's just a question of taste.

On the other hand; 'Windowlicker' is def. not my fav. track
but still it's a quality track -- more quality than many
previous tracks.

well, the 'newest' track he's released is 2 years old. but i
know what you mean. i like his newer material. i like some
saw1 tracks, but some just go boom-boom-boom. i haven't got
any caustic window, but from the songs i've heard, it's just
really loud near gabber. correct me if i'm wrong.
however, i'm a fan since come to daddy, so i guess i'm
prejudiced. after come to daddy i got rdj, which i loved
(although it was completely different than come to daddy).
after that i got classics from the library, and i was sooo
disappointed. on the other hand, i love i care because you
do..., on, saw2 and hangable auto bulb.
wonder what mr. james likes best....

Yes.. I still like his new stuff, but his old stuff was a
lot more raw and abrassive.. it was pretty harsh some of it.
And I love that sound. Like Flaphead or Isoprophlex, or
Dodeccaheedron.. many many more. They just have that heavy
dark quality to them. Older = better. Although newer is
still cool. :]

Well, personally I don't particularilly like his older
stuff, although there are some good old tracks. But I don't
nessasarilly like his newer stuff either. Infact I thought
the whole Windowlicker EP was some of his worst work. The
stuff that I like most is the RDJ Album, SAWII and the HAB
I&II EPs.

I also find his newer stuff way more interesting then his
older stuff, with the exception of SEL AMB1 and Polygon
Window...
Most of the Caustic Window, Classics stuff I find just too
abbrasive ( almost juvenile sounding ,some of it) and not
nearly as complex and beautiful as his later stuff.
I just think that 90% of works between 93 till 97 is by far
his best.
The "HAB" series are complex, sad and gorgeous.
"I Care Because You Do" and "RDJ" albums show how versatile
and brilliant Aphex really is.
Selected Ambient Works vol 2. is a total everlasting classic
masterpiece IMO...
As innovative as Aphex might have been called in the early
90's, I dont think that his earlier works really do him all
that much justice, with the exception of "Digeridoo" and all
that.
I compare his stuff to Black Dog at the time, and I think
that BD outdoes him in the early 90's.
I just think that the material from Classics and Caustic
Window sounds kinda dated, and for someone who is so hyped
as the greatest electronic musician of the 90's ( which IMO
he is by far), I think this really shows with his latter
complex and emotionallly generous stuff.....
