I love these guys but I'm curious to see how accepted they are in a predominately electronic community. SY is one of the extremely few non-electronic bands I like .. I think no one in rock music today or ever before can match their ingenious conceptual song structures, cryptic lyrics, melodic sensibilty, emotive atmospheres, and dissonant droning noise jams .. opinions anyone?

Sonic Youth rocks ... they are way up there in my "A" list of rock bands along with Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, and Husker Du.
Albums to check - Daydream Nation, Sister, Evol, Dirty.
I didn't listen to them for a few years but got back into them after the release of their last album...

happy to see a few fellow fans .. :)
Inverted: Pixies are great too .. don't think of them on the same level as SY personally but they are definitely a step above the norm.
Experimantal Jet set is a good labum, but I must say it's one of my lesser favorites. I like the short snapshots and ideas, it's just not as much fun to listen to. Screaming Skull, Tokyo Eye, Starfirld Road ... it does have some classics, I just prefer A Thousand Leaves, Daydream Nation, EVOL, etc ..
As for Goo, I like it, but it's a little too normal by SY standards. I found the Goo video at Tower records in Austin though.. that's pretty cool.

That is one massive re-release! I have a lot of the singles from Dirty but there's plenty of new stuff as well.
I have mixed feelings about these re-releases, though. If the double disc is about the same price as a single, I'll get it. I'd much rather them release the "Dirty Sessions B-Sides and Basement Tapes" as a separate disc.

No i haven't... can hardly imagine it :-p It's such a powerful song! Doesn't an acoustic version take away alot of that power?
It sounds to me like it was invented to play loud... yeah.

It's not totally acoustic guitar, but it still sounds very strange. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they decided to play it that way - maybe someone dared them to do it.
slint: I like "Murray Street." It's not as intense as their older stuff but the songs still have power, especially "Karen Revisited." (I always seem to like Lee's songs the best.)
It's the first album I've bought of theirs since "Experimental Jet Set ..." so I've been away for a while.

Was it on an official release? Or is it just something they did during a concert?

the summer concert was great, I caught them in Austin. We even got to meet them and I got them to sign my 1000 Leaves album jacket :D.
Ophecks: Cross the breeze is a pretty good track, although I think I like the Sprawl better .. they seem very similar to me, in that they both are long, two part stormers. Both are Kim songs as well ..

yes! sonic youth kick much ass. washing machine is a good album too, I really need to get more of their albums but ive heard like 6 of their albums. havent heard their oldest albums though but someday maybe i'll have them all. how are they still signed to geffen, they dont make enough $ for geffen to be interested in keeping them signed (although i suppose it has something to do with major labels wanting some creibility so it makes them look less interested in only $). sonic youth dont even like major labels\geffen so I dont know what the deal is.

I think I remember reading in a magazine a long ago that the band really wanted to start recording in their own studio, so they took the deal and advance $ from Geffen to build one.

Agree with ya there dariusgriffin, I prefer their Geffen stuff.....Dirty being my fav also Goo & Washing machine were really good aswell......they've released alot of bullshit though.....15 mins of feedback and scraping guitar strings is a waste of eveyone's time and money.........
As for comparing the them to the pixies..... their both hugely influencial(?) but pixies win hands down.....mind blowing...one of the best bands ever.....not one of today's rock bands can touch the pixies

a rreview of Dirty on amazon.
noise annoys, September 9, 2003 Reviewer: A music fan from channel islands United Kingdom
Being a big fan of the early 90's grunge scene (Nirvana,Stiltskin,Pearl Jam,Stone Temple Pilots etc)a work colleuge told me i'd be foolish not to check out this album. How wrong was he! Where Nirvana know how to write a melody these 'not so youthful' lot are more content to make an unlistenable racket. As for the vocals, well, they wont win any prizes for half hearted mumbling and out of tune screaming.Only on tracks '100%' and 'Sugar Kane' do they attempt to write a proper song but they still cannot help themselves from descending into muddled un-coherant nonsense. It's not surprising they faded soon after this album. The title says it all.I suggest sticking to the classics of this genre.
