IDM sales figures- interesting

mimi college charts represent how much a cd is played on
college radio, it has nothing to do with sales. college
students are smart and morally apathetic enough to burn cd's
instead of buying them, or just keep mp3's on their hard
drive since they're constantly at their computer. the sales
figures were real but now they're outdated. still, the
increases are probably very small. this is just not a
well-selling genre, and what hurts the most is when the true
appreciators don't think it's necessary to BUY the music
they really like.

if those numbers are soundscan they may be accurate for all
the soundscan barcode reading shops in the states (HMV,
Tower, Virgin etc.) but there is also a whole shitload of
independent shops who don't submit data to soundscan, for
Warp releases I would say at least 50%. I'd say double
these for the states and then double again to include UK and
japan and you're not far off. Still, it's not easy to make
money doing non-pop non-vocal music... Especially in the
states where there's not that strong of a techno scene. It
should be noted though, Warp's numbers are definitely among
the highest in the business. Most artists are lucky to sell
1000 copies, even ones that you may think are 'famous'.
Basically, all that bad shit you heard about how hard it is
to make it as a musician, is true. Doesn't mean it's not
worth trying though, there are some people out there making
a living (IE: many on the Warp roster) and there's no reason
that with a lot of hard work you can't be one of them.
Difficult does not mean impossible.

hmm well i didn't realize that was what the college charts
were -- but it is exposure nevertheless.

it's exposure but it makes only a minimal dent in the sales
of albums (eg: mogwai's latest debuted at #181, next week it
will be off the charts i'm sure. first week sales are almost
always the highest.) it probably affects concert ticket
sales more than anything else, since you can't pirate a
ticket.

i guess this isnt a good topic for me to be posting to since
i hardly give a fuck -- i buy the music i listen to.

i suppose i should care more, but i guess if the bola man
can drive a mercedes, that's his business. but i don't feel
guilty if he can't -- hey, i bought his records.
