How did you get into aphex & what did you first hear?

rob aka bucephalus from Australia on 2001-04-04 09:14 [#00002514]

For me it was 'At the heart of it all' from the NIN album
'further down the spiral'. But the song that made me buy all
of his albums was Alberto Balsalm...

i think i was sort of spotty. i mean, i had seen the come
to daddy video on mtv (when they used to play videos), and
um, my friend let me borrow saw2. i even used (i believe)
"lichen" for a student film of mine. such a beautiful piece
...

i bought the rdj album from my cd club because i wanted to
try out some different music.

tekn010G from Australia on 2001-04-04 23:27 [#00002590]

one of my friends showed me powerpill pacman (which I
thought was average at the time) on mp3, so I went home and
downloaded it, I went on a search to find more songs like
this and downloaded some more aphex songs, after downloading
"pulsewidth" and "4" I stopped looking and started chasing
up other artist that I thought were better at the time, then
when I saw the windowlicker film clip, I went out and bought
saw I, which I thought was awesome, and I've been getting
his stuff ever since

AFXDUB from Canada on 2001-04-05 03:52 [#00002604]

Well lets see... I remember hearing analogue bubblebath
one.. the song in a friends beat up old car. I thout it was
really weird.. at the time i listened to deathmetal [for
some weird reason]. A year later.. i was getting into
different stuff.. weirder things. So i went to my local cd
shop, and I saw ventolin for sale.. i bought it, not knowing
if it was going to be good or not. i didn't really know what
to think of it. After a month of trying to listen to it, i
just stopped. then i heard my same friend listening to
Isopophlex in his room. IT WAS THE SHIT!. i went home and
listened to Ventolin again.. i loved it to death!. Since
then.. [years back] I have bought/downloaded every single
release RDj has put out!. I can't stop!.

Dodecha from norway on 2001-04-05 06:26 [#00002608]

First song i heard was Ventolin, it got on my nerves :) and
i started searching for more aphex twin music

WooferAttack!!! on 2001-04-05 07:45 [#00002612]

The first song was "COME TO DADDY (PAPPY MIX)". I saw the
video and I was shocked.

Now, I know many songs of RDJ, and sometime I discover that
some of them I listened in 91-92-93, but in that period I
didn't know was AFX sound...

I bought Analogue Bubblebath back in 1991 but didn't pay it
much attention, I didn't rate it at the time. I also bought
the rabbit city white label back then but never played it
when I DJayed.

It was the Hangable Auto Bulb EP what got me into the Aphex
Twins...

I purchased Drukqs and RDJ album at the same time, after
having heard about AFX on some radio or music reviews
website and having listened to the samples on the Drukqs
website.

I read about AFX in a swedish magazine called POP (r.i.p)
and ordered seven warp-related records + one from beyond
from my local record shop in the summer of 93. Half a year
before that I bought my first synth - things haven´t been
the same since then... ;)

heard Cliffs (from SAWII) and the pacman thing on some guy's
dodgy site. then a mate let me borrow Drukqs.
i was already into squarepusher and mu-ziq a good 6 months
before i really got into aphex

ahahhaha! That settles it! :D

I ended up hearing boy/girl song on MTV's amped and that was
that. Went out and bought the RDJ album. From there I had to
find out as much as possible.

When I was at uni in 92, this very nice Cornish girl who was
friends with "that crowd" managed to disseminate virally
throughout the entire Halls of Residence "SAW 85-92", and
got me where I am today. Xltronic.

so if you were to send a naked emotionless cyborb back
through time that would be the one person you'd have to
banjax to spare you from this all pervasive ennui?=]

I wouldn't risk it. I'd hate to come back to the future and
find I was an ageing goth.

best, played some photek & funkstörung to a friend that
said "you should like aphex twin". she lended me rdj album
and i started discovering the whole warp catalog.

He was a sort of minor celebrity during the 90's...
"That mad techno knob twiddler bloke."
I think I've heard his stuff on the radio and TV since I was
about 13, bought the Richard D James album at fifteen, on
the advice of a cooler, older kid. I remember reading some
book about youth sub-cultures (mods/hippies/punks/etc)
publisher in the mid-nineties when I was about twelve, and
the last chapter was about ravers and techno. There was a
picture of him in his studio with all his gear, he seemed
quite cool and futuristic.

i knew about him before this, but i really started actually
listening to him after i saw that rubber johnny video with
afx237v7 in it. the beginning of that video scared me at
first, but it's classic now.

Whenever i used to visit my home town, my best mate there

that song is so fucking good! (its my ring tone now kekeke)
Been into aphex for only a couple years now...

Someone told me my music sounded like him. I had heard AFX
before and thought it sucked. gave it another listen and
really got into RDJ album.

Kind of hoped that he would release some good music instead
of being a dogmatic secret fucktard.

That got me into the IDM genre, the only glitch stuff I had
heard at the time was were really only in NIN and Charlie
clouser remixes. I knew I really liked that, and I always
tried to do it in my music. So around the year 2000 I heard
RDJ and was pleasantly surprised!

I was fucking the horse from the little britian computer
service tech sketch and he transfered his knowledge of Aphex
Twin through his anus up my dick and into my brain. Like a
fire wire cable. I immediately went out and bought Saw 2.
(His suggestion)
