I've linked my decks and mixer to the line in of my PC. I can now sample from records, my mixes and scratches (I've recorded a nice little scratch on one of the beeps on astrobotnia 2). I can also use the PC as a quadrophonic mixer and sampler too! I'm going to try to play the setup with a mate on decks and me on the PC. Could make for some "interesting" results... I haven't managed to dig out my copy of kontakt yet, but so far I've been using wavelab to sample stuff. So much better than hardware samplers :) |

I was thinking about taking one with my rubbish digital camera (640*480) and ULing it some time next week. I'm going to try to take one with a decent camera for insurance purposes so I might post that one instead. Now if only I could get my midi keyboard working... |

from a previous post about crossfaders and scratching the other day, i forgot to say yes get the v2 butter rugs. htfr.com sell them quite cheap. they are the best, and made by thud rumble(qberts company) very good quality |

Ah yes, another query for you Dave. I can't afford dust covers for my PDX-2000s (£40 each!), but I will get some when the new cheaper ones come out some time soon. However, for the interim I want something to stop them (and my mixer) from getting dusty. I've heard of people using dust sheets, are these special plastic, positively charged (repels dust) sheets or will any light sheet do? Thanks. |

I need to get my equipment sorted out, At the moment my decks are laying on the floor under loads of junk while my computer is buggy and shit. I'm planning on getting a stand for my decks so I can hook them to a switcher box that feeds the output between my stacker and PC. I'm getting a radio/TV card too so I can paw around with Video and rip and good life stuff from the radio. www.quietpc.com has ultra silent cases and I got mine from there so the sound of my PC won't mess my music up. |

dont bother. if you use them as much as me then you will get fed up putting them on then off over and over again everyday! But if you must, then I would suggest just a simple light cloth sheet. I wouldnt go with plastic unless it actually repels dust, because i have a feeling it would most likely attract it. why not cling film? just keep a roll nearby and keep those decks nice and fresh between use:) |

Yes, there's at least one thing one newsbeat on radio one at 5.45pm that I want to sample every day. I'm considering getting a new PC case, but another HD is the priority thing first. Dave_G: Cling film is charged (can't remeber whether it's positive or negative) that's what makes it "clingy". I'll just use spare bed sheets :) |

I know ;) What Cartridges do you recommend? Shure M44-7's? I currently have Stanton 505s and whilst they're okay I know the shure ones have much better tracking... |

505 should be fine with the pdx. if youve got 1210 then the m447 is better, but the tracking on pdx's is so good anyway, 505 should do. i use 500's and they work fine after they have been "broken in". 505 should be fine. i run my 500s on 3g usually, but 5g if im doing insane crazy scribbles etc. |

I have some 500s too. I can scribble my 505s as fast as I can on 2.5g without it skiping, but on certain records when I do violent tears they can skip (mind you 2.5g is very little and I am still learning). Thanks for the advice, I'll stick with these for the meanwhile and use my £s to save for a scratch mixer. |

I've given it some thought, if (when) I get a mac laptop for music I'll consider getting final scratch for it too. My concerns: I know the latency is meant to be only about 7/8ms, but I wonder if it'll be noticeable when scratching records quickly... I know you can get replacement records, but even so they will probably be about £10 each. Due to the cost I'd like to see if it becomes de facto before adopting it. There may be some problem/limitation that only becomes apparent 6 months down the line. Mind you, I do like the idea of custom battle wax and also being able to play my own track without having to get dub plates cut. Still it is expensive... If I get a gig DJing sorted out I'll look into it, but whilst I remain in the bedroom I'll stick to normal records. |

ive used final scratch its actually really good. i was sceptical too, but there is no delay involved in it, well at least i couldnt detect one. its only £499, so its quite good value for money, considering you dont need to press up vinyl for projects. it runs on BeOS, so has very low latency, boots from the CD and actually works, unlike windows. it allows you to access FAT partitions, i.e MP3 collection. Ceri JC nice software list. I use: Reason2, Recycle2, Cubase VST 24 Floops, old version, ReBirth, Cooledit Pro.....loads of others, but they are the main ones. |

I heard from the guy I got my decks from that there is very little latency, but I wonder if 6ms in noticable on really fast scratches? Mind you, Babu says it's good so I guess it must be. I've used Cubase SX briefly, but it's not to my tastes. I still desperately want a go on Reason, but no one I know has it. I'm considering buying a copy of Reason 2 (although for the £200+ I could get a PMC-06).... |

the final scratch is just an interface between pc and decks. you plug the mixer into it and both decks i think, set mixer to LINE, not phono. the hub has a usb interface, which controls the mp3s held on the computer. the software BOOTS off its own CD, and loads BeOS, which if you dont know is an unpopular, but very good OS for low latency music, but has commercially failed due to lack of programs(hence its unpopularity)...its kinda like linux, rather than windows.....anyway... the final scratch runs in BeOS for v.low latency, and is much more crash proof than window$. you can still access all the mp3s off of FAT (ie windows) partitions and drives. no data is stored on the hub, it is only an interface. the only strange thing is leaving the vinyl on the tt and using the mouse to change mp3, very bizzare at first! |

Just thinking about how much fucking money that would cost puts me off music making slightly. I'm not even sure if anything good would eventually come out of it, I wouldn't want it to end up as just another very expensive toy. |

its £499, so 500 quid, not that much when a 1210 costs ~350quid! its not really a toy. you can use it at home to record your n-a-m-e then scratch it, so no need for dubplates when making tunes, or if ure a pub/club dj, then no need to carry round loads of records, cos u will have them all on HD in the laptop. god im starting to sound like a stanton sales rep:) |

Yes, it's the idea of a dub plate replacement that attracts me to it. BeOS is meant to be pretty good, but like you say lacks software. It was minorly popular among 3d CGI/multimedia a couple of years ago. I need to get a laptop at some point and I'll probably go for a mac so I can play music live. Mac version of final scratch should be out by then hopefully. |

traktor is not that hard to learn, it's cool to work with those loop and cue markers ... i just have a bit problems with syncing the tracks... i use a desktop tower, a celeron 633, but it works fine ... i use an external mixer, a normal 2 channel dj mixer, i also tweak the resonance filters in traktor with my uc16 midicontroller for fade in's and fade out's ... |

I don't know for sure, but I imagine the special vinyl you use it with has some sort of noise that represents track position on it. The final scratch sits beween the decks and mixer and plays the appropriate section of the MP3 based on that deck. I was thinking of how I was worrying about the final scratch records wearing out, but thinking about it record burn wouldn't actually effect the playback quality unless it was so bad that the final scratch couldn't read the position. |

I use my fatboy for midi controlling the filters, crossfader and vol levels. How do you use your real mixer? Is there some way of setting both decks to play at same time (I presume you can't use headphones if one deck is linked to the other channel of your soundcard?) |

OK... in traktor 2 you have an option "using real (or extern) mixer" in the preferences... i have 2 mono outputs on my audiophile card ... i plug one of them to the left channel, the other one to the right channel, then i plug the stereomaster out from the dj mixer to my behringer mixer, which contains some mono channels, i use 2 monochannels, one for left and one for right channels ... on the headphones (which is plugged on the dj mixer) i only hear mono (left channel), but i can work well with this setup ... |

Ah, I see. So if you had 2 soundcards (or a surround sound card) you would link the stereo outs of each to line 1&2 inputs on the mixer then just chuck your headphones into the mixer. I'll keep my current mixer for Traktor when I get a new one for my decks. Thanks for the idea :) Talking of which does anyone know of: a) If the soundblaster extigy can be used at the same time as your normal internal soundcard. b) Is there a device equivalent to the extigy that works on both macs and PCs? Thanks Dave G- your crossfader cleaning tips worked a treat. I did it at the weekend and there is no bleed at all now. It's still a little stiff from where I bent the casing, but definately a big improvement. |

glad to hear the fader is fixed. the casing is easy to bend back into place with some long nose pliers. try adding a bit of oil to the rails the xfader runs on to make it smoother. i use singer sewing machine oil. it seems to work better than calilube! are you going to get the 06? |

New crossfader (might buy 2 as I imagine they'll be discontinued in the next year or so due to the new PCV range...) ,Sennheiser HD250IIS and more records are main priority music wise. Then I'll start saving for the 06. I used sewing machine oil- my mum gave me some. They went and got the manager at the chemist before selling me meths- obviously I look like a wino ;) |
