masterpiece? or disapointment?
I am curious what Stanley Kubrick fans on this messageboard
thought of the film.

Personally I consider it a masterpiece, but there are lots
on this board who don't (I asked the same question a few
months ago)... I think it's either misunderstood or not
understood enough by most people who doubt its amazingness.

watching that film, you could tell that kubrick was a
complete perfectionist - i don't think theres anyone around
today who would put so much sweat into getting each shot
_exactly_ right. An absolutely joy to look at, even if it is
too long, has a shit plot, etc.

I like it , its a very entertaining movie visual wise.
The plot is tricky ,like all Kubrick movies hard to desifer
the inner story without reading an experts essay.

Wonderful plot, very noir and headfucking. It had mystery at
its core, wrapped in fear and desire.

Visually the movie was a bag of the finest Hallowe'en candy
I've ever had the honor to gorge myself on.

The moments of humor were well placed too, like the way the
good doctor brandished his Wallet of Power with its doctor's
license like a detective's badge, and the way he was always
ostentatiously paying for things.

Masterpiece, absolutely.

i dont see the genius in it thats all i can say... very poor
scenario, and in fact i dont like the principal actors...
i just certainly dont care enough about rich people's
orgies, or maybe love stories in general...
but i think that in the kind of sexual insanity and
paranoïa, "society" from brian yuzna is way better

being disapointed with the plot. not so much the visual
aspect.

i kinda liked how tom cruise was called a fag. i mean, when
do you see tom cruise in a movie where he's not everyone's
favorite lovable clown?

he totally needed to be taken down a pizeg, YALL

offline Anus_Presley on 2002-12-25 08:38 [#00490865]

and it is a verry scarry film. the idea of lust drraging you
in to deep. something that you can't underrstand orr fight,
getting out of yourr depth. so in a sence actually i think
it was quite good. still i think it needed morre of an
ending lets say, coz thinking about it it did have a plot,
but not a climax.

An acquired taste, more likely to appeal to die-hard
Kubrickians than anyone else.

The orgy sequence are some of the most magnificent minutes
in the history of cinema, unless of course you saw the film
in the US where it was digitally mauled.

i thought those scenes were stupids and empty... and i saw
the european version....i cant see how they could have cut
it !
i felt the sadness of the sex parts through the screen...
seriously i hope rich people have more fun than that
(mmmh i have some doubts in fact :)

It wasn't cut, various bits of body were digitally obscured
with fake vases etc.

The scene appealed to me because it was fine art.

"It wasn't cut, various bits of body were digitally obscured

shit scary thats like in the sci-fi novel "remake", where
the guy has to delete alcohol bottles and cigarettes from
old movies to remake them... i dindnt know the existence of
that process for real...

shit 2003 i feel you coming..... like a crawling bitch ;)

here's how you know a movie is bad... you go to opening
night with a line going out of the theater with kubrick fans
and during the movie, people are talking on their cell
phones, snoring or yelling, "THIS SUCKS!" at the screen.

i was one of the snorers.

That's a shallow and ignorant way to judge a movie--people
ignorant enough to use their cellphone during the screening
of a movie aren't that likely to have opinions worth much
attention.

offline catzscan from between heaven and LV (United States) on 2002-12-25 15:54 [#00491156]
Points: 86 Status: Lurker

the point is that hard-core kubrick fans were bored out of
their minds... people don't use their cell phones during
movies if they are at all interested in what's happening
onscreen.

So it's Okay to disrupt other people's viewing because a
person considers themselves a hardcore Kubrick
afficianado? I know plenty of big Kubrick fans who
consider this film a masterpiece, and there are numerous
lengthy articles online detailing why they consider it to be
so.

i thought this movie was brilliant...a good film is like a
good song-it makes you really feel, often without really
knowing why. this flick invoked perfectly the feelings one
goes through when you're in love and you find out the object
of your love hasn't always cared like you thought they did.
i could talk forever about all the little shit in it but i'm
not going to be rude....

well it was your reasoning in the first place that rankled:
just because some ignorant pricks didn't like it, and
decided to make that known thru ignorant means, then you
reasoned that's a way to know if a movie is bad...

i just saw it...not to impressed...plenty of nice scenes,
unfortunately i don't like cruise & kidman, and well, since
it was kind of thriller i was expecting a different end
which was totally disapointing - i don't mind such ends, but
since the whole film had something mysterious i expected
something different for and end.
