Ok, some somebody explain how MIDI works?

I've been listening to the Mario Sunshine MIDI soundtrack
(can't find the genuine MP3s), and they're really good,
especially this one.

But it sounds different depending on whether I play it in my
browser or on Winamp or some other prog. The drums sound
bigger, or one of the melodies may even me a different
instrument. Sometimes the song will sound different every
time I play it in Winamp, slightly different mixing or
arrangements. A couple of times, some of it was out of tune
and I had to start it over... odd.

Does MIDI sound different depending on your computer or your
soundcard or what? I know, I'm completely fucking clueless
about MIDI! But fascinated.

MIDI is the musical instrument digital interface, it
contains no audio, its just a control mechanism for midi
compatible devices (such as your sound card, or a
synthesiser). The reason it sounds different in different
programs is that some programs cause the midi to play the
synthesiser on your soundcard, others have virtual software
synths that they use with the midi information. Its like
sheet music for digital instruments.

really annoying.

You want to know something, YOU look really annoying. :D

Jupitah: if you have a game pad port on your laptop, then
that can act as a midi port with an adapter cable. If you
dont have one, youre going to have to look at an external
solution.
Check out www.m-audio.com, the USB quattro seems pretty
nice, and its also a high fidelity audio solution as well as
a midi box.
