today's must-have is 'electric circus' by common. 2
years in the making; highly experimental hip-hop (think:
sequel to 'stankonia'). rave reviews so far and it just came
out today. i'll say more later, as my copy's waiting for me
at the package center.

features a song with stereolab's laetitia sadier, 2 songs
with the neptunes, and many collaborations w/ the
soulquarians. other guests include erykah badu (common's
wife), mary j. blige, prince (yes, prince), cee-lo, jill
scott, and zap mama.

really? that sucks, i thought it was out yesterday there.

for anyone put off by "hip-hop" music, you'd be interested
to know that heavy musical influences on the album include
psychedelic rock, new wave, and techno. very ambitious and
reviews say it's pulled off expertly. ?uestlove of the
soulquarians, who also happens to be the drummer and leader
of the roots, says this album is the best thing he has ever
been a part of, and common's best album by far.

hard to reach the heights of Like Water.

hopefully it'll live up to the hype; i've been eagerly
waiting for this album since it was promised for summer
2001. a couple songs i haven't heard but have seen labeled
as instant classics are "between me, you & liberation" and
"heaven somewhere". the only stinker is supposed to be "i
got a right ta" (produced by the neptunes and featuring a
chorus sung by pharrell) which is one of the two i've
actually heard. i like it; common appropriates a sadat-x
style flow over a rock guitar style neptunes beat. i think
?uesto called it "easy rider" for the hip-hop generation,
which is a mental image that makes sense with the song.

Well, let's wait and see. Nice that Neptunes back someone
worth backing up for a change.

Jonesy: Miracles do happen, you only have to believe.

Phresch: Haha. That one's a classic.

no - his second album was DOPE - after that he fell off - de
la soul, tribe, roots, etc etc all fell off - i feel
betrayed by hiphop - its all bullshit now

well besides buck65, awol one, and sacred hoop

oh please, could you be an even more stereotypical bitter
hip-hop fan? p.s. fuck white hip-hop.

hahaha - stereotypical? - nah i had my fill - ive been
listening to hiphop forever and its just getting stale -
needs new direction - the new indie shit is lame too - its
all about the gods and the earths and the hand motions and
big pants and stuff - its weird - i dont feel like i should
have to dress a certain way just to go to a hiphop show w/
all these "heads"!

the crowd at atmosphere was LAME - buncha corny
mutherfuckers who only own their latest album and high
school girls dressed like sluts - probably like a common
concert

dont be a racist

sorry but hip-hop artists have no obligation to fit into
your limited perspective of what hip-hop is.

you do have my sympathy, however--it must be really sad to
have such a limited spectrum of music to listen to.

offline euphonicfilter from illadelphia (United States) on 2002-12-10 10:06 [#00476521]
Points: 2443 Status: Addict

no - they dont have to fit into what I like - just do
something interesting

you can argue that back in like 93 things could have gotten
any better - souls of mischief - black sheep - artifacts -
lords of the underground - de la - tribe - jesus goes on
forever

you could walk into a store and buy anything and chances are
it would rock the block (haha)

i miss those days - like a lost love

sob sob

seriously - its embarrassing

i could name 50 hip-hop producers better than No I.D.

white rap for the most part is attrocious. ooh, nerdy white
kids with nasally voices talking about esoteric subjects w/o
a good sense of rhythm, style, or even coherent narrative.
GROUNDBREAKING.

you are a stereotype, like i said; it's sad that you're
missing out on so much great hip-hop still being released.
everyone has a favorite era, favorite style, etc., but it's
only the truly ignorant who close themselves off to new
development.

its NOT NEW - its fucking r&b - im not a indie white hiphop
fan - so dont think you know what i like - FUCK ANTICON -
thats right - FUCK EM -

do you listen to music that is avant garde? perhaps not -
cause if you did you would understand (what they call)
"avant hop" - i personally am not a fan but respect it cause
ITS DIFFERENT -

common's electric circus should be called "shit circus"
(spinal tap rip off for ya) -

this is wasting my time -

common rules - i love mca - they're a nice label - the new
roots its amazing - jay z rocks the hizzy fo shizzy - in the
dizzy

clizzy closet?

i might check out common since all his albums have cool
titles....im not a big fan of hiphop aside from clouddead
and some of the anticon stuff. quasimoto is good and
busdriver.

well i will say upfront that this is completely different
from cLOUDDEAD, anticon, or quasimoto (although madlib did
do a remix of "dooinit" by common). if you can get past the
differences though (just don't expect it to be like abstract
hip-hop or anything comical like quasimoto or kool keith) i
think you'll like it a lot. some great rhymes on this album.

oh man this album is amazing, thanks so much titsworth.. i'm
not too into most hip-hop, but the variety of songs on here
combined with the amazing usage of electronics and live
instruments is astounding. i can't believe this cd was only
$10 at best buy, what a fucking steal. best hip-hop albums
i've heard in years. thanks again titsworth for letting us
know about this.
