Word.
I still listen to tapes whilst driving. Also, they're good for pause-button edits. They're super cheap these days too.

ok reading the first post i nearly shit myself laughing...this one takes the cake...
* - unbreakable cassette are like minidiscs,. you can use them as shuriekns
and they'll still play.
keep smokin the crack baby. this form of tape i'm glad to see go...very fucking noisey, tape itself will break over time, loss of quality after making a copy, overdubbing makes more noise on top of the pre-exsisting noise. this form of tape was the worst consumer format ever introduced and accepted.
reel to reel's are where its at man...and those big suckers in recording studios....not this shit flimsey format. if any part of this format shouldn't die it would have to be these machines...its really expensive to maintain though which is probably its down fall. a lot of people i know still dig using them though.
* - blackouts cheap tape players run on batteries and are readily avaliable ,.. I suggest you buy one in case of unwanted blackouts,.
minidisc players/recorders don't run on batteries either??
- disposable people have spare tapes lying around all the time,. just ask
if you can have all the tapes they don't want,. and there you go,.. more tapes for use
christ, australia must be like 10 years behind the rest of the world if this is the case still...maybe its just me, maybe once i got a cd burner i embraced cd's more than others but tape is just bad and wrong.
whatever tapes i had left i converted to CD after cleaning them up quite a lot through cool edit now audition. i have a tape player still in my vehicle but it was really just there to run my minidisc music through...i may have listened to 1 tape...it gets annoying waiting for tracks to come up...and searching/cueing while driving. bleedthrough sucks balls too

cassetteboy.
.. you ever make tape loops?
open up a cassette.. cut the tape so it just loops around the spools and stick back together.. you get a few seconds to record on.
place some tape "sticky type" over the erase head.
and place tape in recorder and record some stuff onto it..
the tape will keep looping, you may have to try a few times to get the right lenght so the tape dont jam.
because the erase head is not working anymore sound will just keep pile'n up on the tape.. it gets messy after a while.. but yeah.. fun experiments..

sounds like fun, too much work for me tho. i used to just "flip" the tape around inside the cassette that way i could listen to it backwards.

I use tapes as improvised grappling hook like devices.
I also use them to lure nostalgic types into shady parking lots where I can begin the process of turning them into a fine leather coat.
That is all.

the times I've spent in the livingroom with tapes have been awesome *
chilling with friends, throwing tapes across the room, sharing, swapping, sorting different mixes, slamming it into the top loading 80' record player and sampling the goods
"I really like (so and so), I was listening to that mix you made me last week, and I heard this awesome track that nearly made me throw my headphones right off, it went like this -----"
"yeah? then have a listen to this" *underarms a tape across the room*
"cheers brotha, you have a listen to this" *overarms a tape across the room*
that when both of us cross our arms over and look cool, while hte rest of the room gets funked by the vibes
if you haven't experienced a scene like this in your life then you're missing out suckah!
(* the following may or may not have actually happened)

I still don't have a CD player in my car, I've been making mixed tapes for years. It's a tradition I don't want to give up... I don't really need the perks that come with CDs/MP3 players when I'm in the car. I don't give a fuck what comes on. I love the feeling of slamming the casette roughly into the deck, that's a sensual feeling you can't get with delicate discs. Tapes are survivors.

Ah yes, tapes are great. I mainly like them for nostalgic purposes, but as Ophecks and several others point out, there's also a unique physical sensation you get from dealing with a tape that can't be matched by other formats. I'm sure some would say the same about vinyl.
Even though I am a fan of tapes and still collect them when I can, I think that MD is the best overall format.

it's getting to the point where mp3 players are almost getting better than MD, but at the moment it's just making MD players cheaper to buy,
give it another year and mp3 player/recorder will be superior IMO
