$9.99 with bonus dvd. buy it, you'll love it and you can
thank me later.

.99 limited edition (free shipping)

most experimental "above ground" hip-hop album since
stankonia.

dunno how long it'll be till the price goes up. you might
have till christmas. 75 minutes of really smart but
enjoyable music.

to the ATP 2003, i dunno if my BF will be able to get time
off school. a lot of peepz from the MB are planning on
hanging out. that would be ideal since i don't know my way
around there.

it's a dope album, but it's not as engaging as their prev 2
albums (the classics 'illadelph halflife' and 'things fall
apart')

it IS highly experimental mainstream hip-hop.. check out the
band doing their best impression of the sun ra arkestra on
the 2nd half of "water" or the vintage black rock feel of
"the seed" w/ cody chessnuTT. the album's full of great
songs and they flow really well. the production and mixing
is also impecable. i wish it sounded more "live" though,
since the roots really are a band. they definitely took the
radiohead kid a / amnesiac approach to this album,
integrating electronics and working on songs in teams of 2
or 3 members instead of the whole group.

talks about this album, i think it's one of the strongest,
smartest, and most diverse hip-hop albums in several years

didn't mean to exclude you mr. corngrower, you do mention
some very fine hip-hop albums on here that don't fall under
the "nerdy whiteboy" or "black guy acting like a clown"
categories.

i love 'circle' but it's totally different. your opinion
counts a lot, you just admitted to buying two really
excellent albums (phrenology and circle).

I try... pure hip-hop is hard to come by in this day and age
of bling-bling smack my bitch bullshit, but when I hear
something that's real, it just sticks. That's probably why
alot of this board can't dig the shit, because when they
think of hip-hop they immediatly think of what's prominent
on the radio and mtv, and don't really feel like putting
forth any effort to dig below the surface.

i love phrenology because it's real without "trying to be."
half of the songs are just pure showcases, lyrically and
musically. i think that's a good ratio, 50% skill and 50%
creative concepts or stories.

yeah, but hey, i also buy quite some albums i dont like
later on :)
i agree tho they are quite different, these two

first time i heard about roots was when i saw that video
featuring erykah badu - i was totally impressed when i saw
they are playing acoustic instruments (which is quite rare
in hip hop i think)
and they play excellent

I like how their production has a sort of "authentic"
feeling to it that I can't really explain or put my finger
on, and how black thought's flows are just so fuckin smooth
and literally thoughtful

i love how intricate the production is.. since it's a band,
it's never just some dummy programming a loop then hitting
play for 4 minutes, so that automatically lends a more
organic and more exciting flavor to it. but since they're
such a smart and talented band (all of the musicians are
seasoned performers and very skilled) there are so many
subtleties, and the melodies and rhythms are really top
notch. and black thought is easily one of the top 5 emcees
around, his best quality being that flow. wow.

I think you just described the authenticity sound I was
talking about almost to a Q.
