I've seen that there has been some posting about this
artist lately. Maybe it has been said before but this guy is
sort of a multi-talent. Check out the coverart he has made
for a norwegian rock group on this link:
http://www.motorpsycho.fix.no/thisis/pictures/

Check out the coverart section. He has made the covers for
Demon Box, Mountain EP, Another Ugly EP, Tomothy's Monster,
Promotor, Into the sun, Wearing Yr smell, Nerve tattoo,
Blissard, Manmower, Sinful Windborne, Angels and Daemons at
play, AADAP ep-box, Baby Scooter, Have spacesuit -will
travel, Lovelight, Starmelt, Ozone, Trust Us, Hey Jane, Slow
Phase Out, Go to California, Phanerotyme, and maybe some
more. Everyone who likes great coverart, should have a look.

Yes!!!!
It's about time this topic got it's own thread :-) Kim is
probably my favourite designer/illustrator/artist out there.
His motorpsycho-coverart is indeed excellent.

Also check out www.runegrammofon.com, a norwegian record-label
where kim designs ALL the recordsleeves :-) (in a much more
minimalistic style than the mp-covers, but still beautiful.

You (mortsto-x) probably already know he also illustrated
many children's books? I'd recommend "maria & jose", "han
kjendo" + "den store rode hund" (or something)... very very
beautiful.

The runegrammofon-covers are my favourites. Excellent covers
for excellent music. He has done a lot of covers on differnt
books, and also written one himself. It is, like, the
smallest book ever, with these naive poems and short-text's,
with naive pencil illustrations. Nothing much, really, but
you can always check it out. Unfortunately, I don't think it
has been translated.

Apparently there has been released a book with a collection
of his illustrations, but only in Germany. Can't remember
the name, though :(

Tree Weekend!! I have that one :-) (Kim sent it to me -
*trying to make you jealous* ;-) ).

Yeah, the book is called tree weekend, and it is like an
overview of everything has done. But the interesting thing
is that he didn't (almost) put any finished artworks in it.
It's mostly just sketches and designs that were still "under
construction", so you get somewhat of an idea how Kim
works... it's a very beautiful book! it also contains many
random photographs and (very) short stories... like...
random memories, quite bizarre but very interesting :-)

I also have the book he made as a graduation-project when he
was still in artschool. It was called "book without
function
", and it's just that... it's not trying to tell
a story or something... just beautiful images. Very nice! It
also came with a CD called "fake" which has people talking,
sound-collages and some songs... it was also limited to 300
copies (signed and numbered!) so i'm very proud of that one
:-p Probably the highlight of my Kim-collection.

Also interesting is the catalogue he made for his "tegninger
fur en hundrings" (sp?)-exhibition. That catalogue (also a
book) is about 5 cm's thick (!) and contains nothing but
drawings... on each page a drawing.

I've read about that small book you talk about... i've
thought about ordering it, but since it seems to be mostly
text... and i can't read norwegian, i didn't think it'd be
worh it :-/ Are there alot of those illustrations in it?

Yo. I see Amazon sell Tree Weekend. Thinking about ordering
it. How the hell have you come so close with Kim,
Surrounded?

If you're a kim-enthusiast, ordering tree weekend would
definitly be a good idea :-) It's an excellent book, i still
look at it alot.

And i just sent him an E-mail a few years ago, asking him
some questions about the motorpsycho-artwork. We mailed back
and forth for a while, he sent me some of his books, i also
sent him some of my work...

And then after a while it just stopped. I guess he's just
too busy these days. With his musical career, and also still
his graphic design and illustrations. He probably doesn't
have time anymore to write with his fans.

(on a different note, i think his cd "melke" was recently
officially released in holland :-D I'll probably buy that
one soon! A cd-r copy is nice, but it just doesn't feel
right ;-) (artwork should be pretty cool too).

You might also be interested in this. It's some
scans from his "book without function" that i put online 3
years ago.

wow, i see you really know all about kim haha

coverart for melke are just random pictures-looks quite
cool-probably he took those
but i think he did the coverart for his previous release
"hei"

im really not concerned with the artwork, im after its
content :)

"wow, i see you really know all about kim haha"

lol, well i wouldn't say i know everything about
him... but quite alot :-p

His art really fascinates me because it's so naive. When he
wants to make a picture of a cat, he doesn't stop to wonder
if he actually knows how to do that... but he just draws a
cat. And it often looks a bit childish and inperfect... but
that is what i like about it.

And he also seems like a pretty cool guy. One day when he
was in a bar he saw the singer from that band Motorpsycho
sitting there. And he put a huge pile of his drawings
infront of him on the bar and said: "if i can design your
next album-cover you can have all those.", haha! (after that
he continued to design all the covers for everything
motorpsycho has released since then). I wish i was so
courageous :-)

His photography is much like his drawings i think... usually
pretty random and not with perfect compositions etc. Just
snapshots of things that fascinate him. He has done
recordsleeves with only photos before, and i always like
those :-)

"i'll send you "hei" coverart along"

highly doubt i won't like that cover (but i haven't seen it
yet, so who knows). Thansk anyway :-)

Surrounded: do you have any of the 7" he has released on
smalltownsupersound? Kim has actually used a friend of mine
on one of the Motorpsycho-covers

"any of the 7" he has released on
smalltownsupersound?
"

I have the 7" single for "torture happiness"... has he
released anymore? I didn't know about that :-) The music on
that one is also on Hei and Melke, but the artwork is very
nice :-D

And no shit, is that guy from Angels and Daemons at Play a
friend of yours? Hehe... that's pretty cool :-) I always
liked that photograph... it's very mysterious and
melancholic. It must be weird for him to know that people
all over the world have a picture of him in their
recordcollections :-p

It's really cool, yes. You should check out a book called
"L" by Erlend Loe. I guess it's been translated to serveral
languages. It's the story about the author, his brother (my
friend on the cover), Kim, and some other friends travelling
to a desert Island. Very funny, and you get to know all the
people quite good.
I have a limited 7" with "Nu kommer Cathrine inn..." and
"Det blev fel", but they are on Melke to, I think.

i have heard about that book before! I believe Kim also
designed the cover for that. But since there are no
illustrations in it, i thought it wasn't really worth
ordering.

But if there would be a dutch or english translation, then
i'd be interested again :-D I'll have to search for that!

story.

"naïef, super" has been translated into dutch :-) That's
something atleast, now i only need to find L...

i send you three mails, because of the hotmail limitation
do you have a yahoo messengger?

What happened then? And when did you send them? Last night i
did clean out my hotmail-account somewhat (threw away over
300kb of mails)... the only reason i can think of why it
might not have worked is that my inbox was too full when you
sent them...

But yeah, i have yahoo-messenger installed too... we talked
on it before (when you were trying to send me those susumu
yokota files)... i still have you in my buddies list ;-)

ah, so big scans :-D I like that! :-p

But ehr... yeah... if you've got time, either you could try
again to send them or get online with yahoo messenger?

the only thing with kim hiorthoy that I have is this
smalltown supersampler which is really good, the track by
kim hiorthoy is probably one of the best on the sampler.

Well tolstoyed, all that coverartwork was fantastic! :-D
Thanks alot! I'll definitly be hunting down the original
versions of the Hiorthøy-albums :-)

Aileron by Rotor+ is really interesting too... (the artwork
as well!! That made a good read :-D) i listened to it twice,
and my only complaint is that maybe it's a little bit too
varried and the tracks don't last long enough. Every time
i'm really getting into it... and then they're over ;-)

But essentially that's a good thing i suppose... if i think
something is too short, means it's beautiful :-)

I'm not too sure about jelinek though... i'll listen to it a
couple more times like you suggested, but i don't really
think this is my kind of music :-)

i love his music... he essentially makes electronica, but
also with many acoustic sounds in there (i'm not sure if
they're all actually "instruments"... sometimes i could
swear a sound in the background is a squeaky door or
something)... very naieve little melodies, both his albums
have a very melancholic feeling to them.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-02-24 02:46 [#00568583]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

cool, nice you liked it, surely you can get those albums
there, if not visit oslo-its close enough :)

hmm, rotor + sounds just like the perfect music album to me,
for some time i was totally into it, but latelly im focusing
on jelinek :) , i listened to this album of his-personal
rock like 10 times on repeat yesterday-im listening it now
again :)
that track i send you is probably the most unique one, all
his other stuff doesn't have that much beats, but that track
was really the first one that really impressed me, and
helped me get into jelinek
there's plenty of other cool music, so you wont be missing
anything if you dont get into jelinek, really :)
