i'd get the first radiophonic album - but for a more solid
poppy but fked up group the white noise album - you can get
it on e bay ..
i'd have a good look on her site - the buy section is good
and i think there are sound bits ..
another couple of bands i would reccom end of the 60's mad
electronics type are the silver apples and mid 70's new york
band called suicide - their first album is great ..
then theres shit loads of library electronics - perry and
kingsley etc masses of stuff you just have to searxh and
follow the links etc

My copy arrived today. The packaging is well old fashioned-
looks like it's from the time the music was made, but it's
in mint condition :D

Delia's version of Air (on a G string) is lovely.

that Warpmart for ya :-D
1 delivery and 6 days before release date.

(Although it's probably more down to Rephlex giving Warp
copies earlier than everyone else)

Ouch! Good thing I didn't buy two copies or I'd feel bad. I
doubt Rephlex made much cash on this release, if they even
broke even... low quantities and 4*10" is particularly bad
(10" is generally more expensive than 12" to press to a high
standard). Not to mention having to pay BBC for the rights
(unless a deal was struck in exchange for giving bbc some
rephlex content) The pressing is really nice and the sleeves
are good quality... if it was this limited I wonder how many
copies there were?

Wicked, just found that the John Baker record has
"Tommorow's World" on it. I've got that track on original
issue of Out of this World" :D

"Christmas Commercial" will be use to cause some head
scratching if I DJ at any christmas parties.

If you've heard any of the old radiophonic workshop records,
just like them :)

Lots of bleepy early analogue synth sounds, all very playful
and fun- nothing too dark and sinister.

warpmart is getting another batch.

I'm thinking of getting the BBC cd's - looks like they have
more on there than the Rephlex edition.

"Time and Tune" (from side C) has a bpm of just over 170bpm,
and the percussion (although there's not really any weight
to the sounds) is also like a simple breakbeat. First dnb
percursor perhaps?

***TRAINSPOTTER WARNING***

the radio nottingham track by john baker was used on alan
partridge (with added vocals by patrick marber) as a pretend
'old song' by one of his guests on an old alan partridge
radio show. the track was called "the smiling bicycle of
amsterdam"

Listened to it in a record shop yesterday, and I have to
say, I was dissapointed.
The recordings showed their age, with dodgy tape records,
and cliched sounds. Don't get me wrong, at the time, this
was cutting edge, but now, no not even the retro value or
anything would make me buy them.

Some of the sounds were sort of early analogue soundscapes,
but sound tame and uninspiring compared to later effort.
This is unfair of me to say, since when most of these were
made, equipment, such as sequential circuits synths,
rolands, and decent DDLs (digital delay lines)and reverbs
didnt exist.
Yet still a sound is a sound, and these recordings sound
flat and lifeless. it seemed to me that most of the work was
split into 3 groups:

1)Crappy melodies which sounded like kids tv show themes
from the 1960s in a mum ive got half a modular moog system,
look what i can do, sort of style.
2)Avant garde, sort of we don't need to stick to any
timescale or play in time or anything, cos we are using
synths:p
3)Soundscapes, which lack the depth and clarity of more
modern offerings, and are badly let down by the recording
media more than the others.

In conclusion, I can see why people would want to release,
buy and even listen to this sort of stuff, but it would
merely be 'interesting' to see how it was 'originally' done.
However musically, I feel it doesn't stand up to the test of
time, and although it would be great to spend a few days
with a copy and sample the hell out of it, I wonder how many
artists already have/ or will do?
Congratulations to rephlex for a bold move, I hope other
people like it, its quite a shame I don't.

I have The Alchemists of Sound on video. Really interesting
film. S'pose you need to see what they were working with to
truely appreciate what they produced. Most of what is
regarded as the 'golden age' of the Worshop was done minus
any synths. Delia Derbyshire and a few of the other pioneers
became disillusioned on the introduction of synths and
prompty left. What was made up until then was done with tape
using found sounds.

Personally I love it. Maybe because I'm of the age to
appreciate it for the nostalgic value as well as the
groundbreaking nature of it.
