Sometimes i feel really uneducated, my schooling wasn't good, i went to a comprehensive in Liverpool, and didnt really know what school was about until i left, it's a cliche but it's true, you don't realize until it's gone.
Anyway, since moving to Holland 2 years ago i have met alot of very educated people, Doctors, Scientists. Some of my freinds have had a very high level of education.
BUT!! some of these people have got NO life skills, i think my smarts mainly come from my life experience, and i have done alot of reading since leaving school, in fact i trained for three years to be a Graphic Designer, which i now have a job doing.
well, my point is, fuck knows. how do you peeps feel about your education or lack of?? I think my life skills and street nouse have got me quite far and i think i am doing ok. do you think if i'd gotten a good education early on in life i would be where i am now or in a total different place???

i have always been sure that i want to be 'academic'. since i was a kid i always wanted to go to university.
then i droped out of high school (cause it was too boring) and worked as a web designer for a while. it was even more boring and now i am sure i want to go to uni. my final exams are about to begin. i'd like to study folklore or fenno-ugrian launguages.
my mother has a very high education and my upbringing has been somewhat 'pointed towards' an academic education.

It's often a criticism levelled against intellectuals by the hoi polloi. The typical comments I have received are things like " Hey smart arse, you might have all the brains in the world but you've no common sense".
My usual retort is something like "Shame they didn't have some exams in common sense isn't it? Then you might have some qualifications, you uneducated piece of shit!"
Then I usually have to try and pick my self up from the floor.

Most 'educated' people I meet are in fact rather dull. Some of the smartest people I've ever met are uneducated academically.
Most educated people are middle class anyway and they generally are the stupidest arses around.

Hmm, that's a toughie. I think both academic and life skills are important. People who say otherwise generally lack one and as a result don't value it. A good balance is to work and study.
That said, I know a lot of people who've done very well and got jobs that require them to be intelligent, but only have a very basic education.
Similairly I know academics (and have been taught by some!) that have gone straight from uni into lecturing (via being a research student) and have done well without needing life skills.
I think it's not just a case of how well in terms of success you're also a more rounded person if you have a balance of both. I'm proud of the fact that I understand Gauss-Jordan Inversion and can also always get work as a waiter or labourer as well.

if these life skills that help you with work are things like being good at working in a team and all that shit then you can keep it. To succeed in your job means that you've been brainwashed by the company you're working for, otherwise you wouldn't get promotion in the first place. All the people in authority at my work are thick gob-shites who know how to tow the line. Do I feel aggrieved that they are earning twice as much as me? Yes! Will I do anything about it? No. I don't care about making a success in a career i don't care about. I'll leave all these thick david Brent characters to get on with it.

I hate education, I'm not learning shit. And yet I have to do this or my future will take a hit... I'm not enjoying myself at all, every test and class and essay is an ordeal. I'm content to just barely pass, like I'm doing. Less work, same outcome, eventually, a 9 to 5 job until 60.

I think you can only go so far on "street smarts" or whatever you want to call it. eventually you'll hit a glass ceiling - can't climb up farther.
I don't agree on educated people being boring. most of my friends enjoyed a good education and they are quite the eccentric and interesting lot..

You need a good mix of Common Sense, Street Smarts, and Knowledge in your chosen field to get by in life. I'm in college right now studyign video production. I hate having to take the required Liberal arts courses, cause I need something like 60 out of 120 credits to be non-video related. I'd rather just learn about the stuff I'm into, but that isn't the way it works unfortunetely. It's good to be well-rounded in your education, so you can fall back on other things if your primary goals don't work out.
That being said, the most important thing in life is to find something that you love, and then do it for a living (and get paid too, if possible). Then you can look forward to going to work every day.

Yeah, got to try to get into something you WANT to do. I'd want to do something involving something artsy or creative, music or video games or the like. Writing about them, something like that. All I can do is take writing courses and whatnot and see what happens... and they bore the shit out of me. I swear I've learned 15, 000, maybe 16,000 times as much off the fucking net than I have from classes. I just can't get interested unless I'm doing it on my own. I'm never bored when I'm alone... I'm busy as hell right now, multi tasking, despite being glued to my chair. :-)

Well.... education can be a good and bad thing. Its a really tricky thing becaue I have learned that everysingle thing in this world... except for scientific laws.... (and sometimes not even then..)... EVERYTHING is subjective. Everything is this damn world is subjective. So, when your being taught by someone with a biased opinion on the world.... sometimes its hard to get a good education. People have their own little opinions on everything.. and teachers and professors have loads and LOADS of (sometimes trite) opinions. If you are lucky enough to get some teachers with level heads... and no extra baggage like personality disorders and mental problems... you could come out ok. Learning has everything to do with the people teaching. Which really surprises me beacause... pilots... who fly airplanes around and have peoples lifes on their hands.. have to train a quarter of their life to get their pilots license. And then you have teachers.... who just have to have a 4 year bachlors and a minimal amount of 1-2 years of getting their teaching creditions... its bogus. so you have these highly skilled teachers with their bachlors and doctrets in teaching who go on to privite institutions... then you have the bachlor degree + 2 years teaching credential training who go off and teach at public schools. I was luckey enough to go to private school in elementary school (thank god, elementary school being the most critical part of your education.......) then went to middle/highschool and just got completly bored out of my mind! Not only that, but you have to put up with so many kids with awfull attitudes and such cruelty. So about 1/4 of the time I was suppost to be in school I ditched and went in search of places to get my elsewhere. I found local coffee shops and talked to college folk.. and went surfing a lot.. and then fucosed on art and music on my computer, and most importantly the internet. So 8 years later here I am... I got fairly decent grades in highschool, and managed to get into a college... next year I am transf

.... transfering to Cal Arts Institute on scholarship. So what I get from education is being "educated and smart" is that its all subjective. Just like everything else in the world. Being a doctor doesnt mean that the doctor is smarter then you. It means that he/she loved and has a passion for his work.... and for most people when they have a passion for something.. it comes easily. I guess what I am trying to get at is this... being "educated and smart" has nothing to do with your schooling. Albert Einstien hated school, there are millions of examples of people who turned out to be brilliant people... and never went to school, or disliked it very much. And it really depends on your definition of being "smart". Most people seem to think that being "smart" means being able to memorize things and trivia... or to have an extensive vocabulary and never mispelling anything. Personally, I think intellect comes from having critical thinking, problem solving, tactical and philosophic skills.
But being "smart or educated" is totally subjective IMO....
just my 2 cents...

education is always good to have just to benefit yourself. Not everyone is meant for big colleges and all and ii think its really just about security and self happiness in life.. The fact you made one of the few intelligent topics on this mb proves you are pretty clever!
Expensive education can give you more confidence and contacts (ie public school) but these people always seem to have something missing... like individuality. (sorry to any public schoolies reading, you're different)
Education is important. Very. It just sucks while you are doing it.

Having an open mind...
has a lot to do with intellect.
And the struggle of finding out your own truth/s
What upsets me... is that people feel that education is SOOOOO important (which it is) and then they dont want to pay taxes that benefit inner city schools, or public schools in general. Its the minds of the future, and people dont want to invest in them... that makes me mad. And the fact that in private schools the bar is set soo high to be able to be a teach in one... and yet in public shcool.. anyone can be a teacher.. even convicted childmolestors and god knows what else! So its this.... rich become richer... poor become poorer mentality that pisses me off. All these great benifits for private schools, which are extremely expensive, then you have an extremely limited budget for the private schools. Thank goodness for scholarships... bad sadly its really hard to manage to get one.
School systems in general are just a mess...

But I hate how we need to have a certain number of ''citations'' and ''resources''... fuck, I know enough about this subject to make an essay good without them, I shouldn't have to be FORCED to find outside resources, and then make a certain number of endnotes about shit I ALREADY KNOW.
