sodenberg = crap.
The only half-decent thing he's done is Traffic.

and when the fuck is someone going to make a film out of
Philip K Dick's "A Scanner Darkly?". I heard Terry Gilliam
was considering it but there was some copyright issue.
grrrr...

That does look rather cool... a bit startrek-ish, but still
cool! i'd like to see that one.

I can't watch trailers seriously anymore though... not since
the seinfeld-trailer. I wonder what these recordings went
like?

"whatever you want"
"no 'whatever you want' jack..."
"oh? what do you mean?"
"it's not that kind of movie"
"oh, ok... whatever you need..."
"no 'need' either"
"whatever you desire..."

Didn't Soderbergh do Kafka? That was fun. I'm a sucker for
anything with Jeremy Irons.

I can't wait till Dick goes out of fashion so they stop
butchering his work. Hey, get Spielberg to produce it.
That'll be another class act.

I take back the 'crap' comment.
I had forgotten that he did:
- The Limey (damn good)
- Kafka (heard a lot of good about it)
and Erin Brokovich was pretty good.

I was quite pleased with Minority report actually. I thought
that speilberg was going to totally wreak it. Ok so it got
annoyingly sentimental (speilberg sentimentality - see AI ..
in fact DON'T) at times and the plot was deformed so as to
make for more action scenes etc etc. But overall I thought
it was a reasonably good adaptation.

On second thought I don't want anyone to make "A Scanner
Darkly" as it's my favorite work of his (from the subset
that I have read) and it wouldn't live up to the images in
my mind. However if anyone was to make it, it would have to
be Gilliam or Cunningham. No-one else.

You know, so many people liked Minority Report I wonder if I
was in the wrong theater. Lots of critics liked it, the
audiences liked it, I dunno. The problem with Spielberg is
he has two modes: serious, and High Lord Cheese. When he
decides not to take something too seriously, it's like he
can't be bothered wiping his ass. He goes for the cheap
shots. And I really didn't appreciate the way he ripped off
the "eye" motif from Ridley Scott's Blade Runner,
considering how little he did with it and how deeply thought
out it was in Blade Runner. And there were holes in the plot
large enough to vomit through; but why should he bother,
right? It's just one of them "sci fi" flicks, not one of
his Oscar shortlist whore flicks.

Kubrick could have done something interesting with A Scanner
Darkly, I think. Then again he was such a big old Kubrick,
wasn't he? Cronenberg was my next choice but he has too many
of his own obsessions.

Whoever takes it on has to have a boundless imagination and
an incredible feel for period. I think you're right about
Gilliam.

interesting points there. Nothing compares to blade runner
(re-released on DVD *must buuuuyyyy*). I think Gilliam could
pull it off. I'm not too sure about Kubrick. I hated Eye
Wide Shut (although the mise-en-scene was good) and I don't
buy into all that "If he had finished editing it, it would
have been incredible" bullshit.

Saw a trailer for this when I went to see Minority
'laughable' Report. I loved the Tarkovsky original, so I
shall probably go to see it. *If* they do a decent job with
it, it'll be worthwhile, though er-makes of good films
almost always turn out piss-poor. I can't think of a single
one that improved on the original. Anyone?

The original has to be a high water mark of some sort or
else they wouldn't bother.

I am excluding movies based on TV series and cartoons
here... although in most of those cases the original is also
better. I mean, how fucking sad is it that Lost in Space was
worse than the TV show?

For movies that improved on the original - I preferred the
Sci-Fi channel remake of Dune to Lynch's version (though
that's highly subjective) and I think the 70s remake of
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is better than the 50s
original.

In general you're right: these remakes are usually total
duds.

i finally managed to see the new solaris. it was alright,
visually gorgeous at points (sometimes it looked too much
like a cliche contemporary american sci fi movie, the sets

jupitah: in response to the post you made nearly a year
ago.. it isnt a scary movie (event horizon kinda stole
solaris' premise and made one already) its actually a love
story more than anything, with some existentialism thrown in
for good measure.

you could say that Soderbergh remade Tarkovsky's film... but
really it'd be better to say he did another (different) film
rendering of Stanislaw Lem's novel Solaris... Lem didn't
particularly fancy Tarkovsky's version of his film, and
judging by their disparate attitudes i can see why... but i
don't give a fuck because Andrei Tarkovsky is a film god (my
absolute favourite film director of all time), and his
version is as good as anything he did in his career (though,
there are several films of his which i prefer over this
one)...
the Soderbergh version is decent, but very very different
from tarkovsky's (for one, it's half as long)... ultimately
a relatively minor work in the career of a man who can't
seem to decide whether he wants to be a respectable
filmmaker or a crap one (Ocean's 12 will probably be coming
out later this year... so things are looking pretty grim)...

by "respectable" or "crap", you mean pretentious or
commercial.
personally, i admire someone who can balance movies like
traffic and solaris with oceans 11 and erin brokovitch.

no i don't think that appealing to a small educated, well
versed in film audience makes you pretentious... people
shouldn't dumb down their artistic aspirations so that they
can appeal to a larger audience, that's how art stagnates...
that's how we never get to experience the beauty of the
countless artists who have come and gone, barely scraping by
during their lifetime only to have their works appreciated
by future generations for years to come (as well as to
assist in the evolution of new talented artists)...
that's not to say that i don't respect the decision of
filmmakers to consciously aim to reach a larger audience...
in fact a director like Orson Welles, whose works were
always intended to have mass appeal, was also one of the
finest directors of all time (to us "pretentious"' types)...
i find your film choices interesting, because i don't see
how any of those films are any more high-brow or accessible
than any of the others, they all simply appeal to slightly
different segments of the population...
alls i know is there is a forthcoming sequel of ocean's 11
which seems to me to be nothing more than a rehash of the
old story with the added "bonus" of fitting Roberts into
more scenes as she is now part of the crew... Ocean's 11 was
tolerable...in fact even more than that: slick... fun... but
i'd rather just watch it again, then witness it turn into
unmotivated, and formulaic... there are plenty of untalented
hacks who can pull of this kind of entertainment that we
don't need a talented director to waste precious years of
his career doing it as well

pretentious may have been the wrong word, but my choices
illustrate an obvious divide in his intent. solaris and
oceans eleven are totally different movies, one is "art" and
the other is "entertainment". i believe solaris is a far
superior film to oceans eleven, but the fact that he made an
entertaining popcorn movie and then made solaris is
interesting to me. i'd like to see other directors do this
more often. given, some of his movies have been a total
waste of time (full frontal??), but i don't mind seeing a
varied career coming out of a director. if i want someone
who does movies that constantly raise the stakes of modern
moviemaking while appealing to a mass audience, i'll go with
spike jonze or wes anderson or the coen brothers.
ultimately, if the man wants to make pure surface
entertainment and deeper films, let him be.
