Today is george's birthday, and surprisingly, my mom gave
me the nirvana-album... hehe. she knows how crazy i used to
be about nirvana, plus i've told everyone how much i love
You Know You're Right... so i guess it's not THAT
surprising. But i probably wouldn't have bought it myself.

I think it's disgusting. I so much adored the way they
released the unplugged-album after kurt's death... without
even mentioning his death, just the beautiful music and
pretty artwork.

But this album... it has some sort of a eulogy written by
david fricke (who?) in it... which is very sentimental and
well... just crap really :-/
In my opinion they should have just printed lots of
photographs of the band, and let everyone have their own
thoughts while listening to the music.

Now it's full of things like: "(about dumb) 'i think i'm
dumb, maybe just happy' Kurt was never the former, still
aching for the latter."

They also changed the nirvana "logo"... meaning the word
"nirvana" written in that specific font. When you look at
all the nirvana-releases, you'll see the spacing between the
letters is a little weird, and the v is kinda seperated...
like it says: "nir v ana". (because the cover for bleach was
created in a great hurry, the typographer didn't have time
to correct it). But they corrected it for this release...
hm... i mean: why? My god... Don't the people at Geffen have
any sense of tradition? It's a small detail ofcourse, but i
noticed it immediately.

I agree... If it had been unreleased material that had been
newly restored then it would be a bit more special for fans
instead of a cash in.

The music is wonderful ofcourse... but i already knew it!
Greatest Hits albums are the worst rip-off since... eh... i
dunno, maybe they are just the worst rip-off period. Unlike
most people here i don't hate the music-industry and am
against illegal mp3's... but it's releases like this that
make me wonder if maybe i should start hating them too ;-)

Still... You Know You're Right remains a great song, i'm
starting to like it more and more! It's up there with the
best songs on In Utero.

"sliver" is a different version than on incesticide... here
it's the single-version, and i've never been able to find
the single :-) It's a great song! My favourite on
incesticide, and one of nirvana's best.

heart-shape box is apparantly also a single-version that
differs from the in utero-version (i don't hear any
differences though :-p)

"pennyroyal tea" is here in a new mix done by Scott Litt.
Apparantly Kurt was unhappy with how it sounded on In Utero,
and had Scott Litt redo it for a single-release (booklet:
"Litt's treatment is finally on record, and we can hear PT
the way Kurt wanted to hear it.") There are really only
small differences though.

All in all, the only reason one might have for buying it is
YKYR, which should have just been avaiable on a single!

However i DO enjoy listening to this album... hehe... have
been playing it all morning! :-o Makes you wonder...

Hopefully we'll get that somewhere next year... if
everything goes alright. Can't wait for the unreleased
material! But i think i'm going to kill someone if the
$#@-people of Geffen include YKYR on the boxset too... grrrr

Greatest Hits albums are also held over artists heads like a
threat.. ie: release another album this year or we put out a
greatest hits and thats you over. Obviously this doesn't
apply to Nirvana.

Unless you're David Bowie. Now THAT was the best investment
this week for me. Its even got that collaboration with NIN
"Im Afraid Of Americans" on it too. ;)

that's just evil! :-o
Does it really happen like that? Man... if i was an artist
i'd hate that! I'd rather record a crap uninspired album in
a couple of weeks then have a greatest hits album released.

At least they shouldn't include the new song with each
greatest hits album! Just the old hits, so the fans can skip
it and it's just for more recent fans who don't feel like
buying the entire back-catalogue.

greedy bastards

maybe you are too young to fully understand the genius of
nirvana :-p (i noticed you are from '85 so...)

Growing up with all that "postgrunge" crap on the radio, i
can understand how you might not get what was so special
about nirvana because all the other guitar-crap tries to
imitate it.... and it that sense sounds just like it

God... listening to this album makes me feel old :-/ I'm
starting to feel all sentimental about these songs and
stuff... and i'm only 24! :-p

or ofcourse you just don't like it :-)
Didn't mean to sound all superior there, sorry. IDM and
nirvana are miles apart, it's only natural many idm-fans
would find nirvana "wank"

That seems like a very explicit avatar, by the way :-p

I bet you that a Nirvana 'Greatest Hits' gets released every
2 years or so now.... look at other bands who had these
collections released with different tracklistings every time
(Stone Roses, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc). Total rip off.

And i hadn't even thought of that... :-s
I fear you may be right... oh dear lord... i'll bet they'll
even dig up something new to put on each of these
releases... forcing me to buy it... aarrgh... i can already
picture it...

"nirvana - the ultimate collection"

And they only released 3 official albums during their time!
How long are they going to be able to milk them?

nah it doesn't! Incesticide is just a bunch of previously
unreleased tracks. I don't consider that an album at all...
it was just something the record co. released to fill the
gap between nevermind & in utero.

I consider something an album when all the songs were
written to be put just there, so that they become a unity
together... more than just a bunch of loose songs.

I've only heard rumours about outcesticide-cd's... never
seen one myself

Is there another live 'album', but called "live in europe"
or is that a video or something?

offline surrounded from it won't be hard anymore to li on 2002-11-07 17:52 [#00432352]

nirvana - hormoaning

1. Turnaround
2. Aneurysm
3. D-7
4. Son Of A Gun
5. Even In His Youth
6. Molly's Lips

As you can see, only one song (D-7, and that's even a cover)
that's not available anywhere else. I've got this ep, but
rarely ever listen to it... it's just not so great ;-)

I don't know anything about "live in europe"? The only
official nirvana-video ever made was called Live!
Tonight! Sold out!
and was quite amusing i thought.
Worth checking out if you're a fan of the band!

The most interesting bootleg i've ever been able to find is
called "rare traxx" and contains all sorts of weird
unreleased stuff opinion, junkyard, verse chorus verse &
sappy
are particularly interesting (good songs). The
soundquality is horrible though... i'd be thrilled if those
were to be released on a future rarities-compilation!
