Unbelievable double cd for fuck-all cash

mum, supersilent, signor ros, amon tobin, suicide etc......
a great and atmospheric collection from what has to be a
truly great independent experimental-music mag. (no i don´t
work for em... i wish)

Is that this months? I had a look and didn't notice amon on
it...

A mate lent me a load of old wire tappers CDs (1-5). Pretty
far out stuff.

yep.. he´s there on cd2 no. 14 before dárcangelo

max tundra has a class tune as does Asa-jang and Junray...
tabla type drums with amazing stecato vocal samples

I think a mate of mine has the other tappers...... i must
design a mission of borrowage (??!!)

I have volumes 1 and 2 of this series. Great stuff by the
likes of Panasonic, Tarwater, 2nd Gen, Solex, Scanner etc. I
don't think any of it is exclusive, but it's nice anyway.
Most of the Wire cover CDs are excellent, but often only
available to subscribers :(

Best UK music mag by far & yep, that CD is very cool....did
you see on the back cover that they'll be bringing out a
book of pieces from it?...looks good...

I've got Invisible Jukebox which is a collection of past IJ
from the mag....very amusing stuff....

Think it's time to sibscribe and get some of the old Tappers
free...

Got mine yesterday after work. Loved the D'Arcangelo and
Electralane tunes. I'll have to ask for a subscription for a
Xmas prezzy. Never bought it before. Its a bit pretentious
but I'd rather that than the lowest common denominator
Ministry.

I hear Seven magazine has folded. Shame. It was a decent
mag.

Has anyone got any Asa Jang and Junray btw? I've got two
more on a Leaf sampler (a bargain so keep yo eyes peeled)
which are really good.

imagine anyone on rephlex or planet mu gracing the covers of
any glossy magazines, not that i object

Leafcutter John from Planet Mu is on the sampler as is
D'Arcangelo.

its hardly a glossy mag.... i believe it WAS owned by some
publishing corp. but when the mag was threatened its
journalists went independent and kept it going with their
basic philosophy of fuck-boundries, labeling, rules... Its
only "pretentious" if you think it goes against the norm for
the sake of it rather than going against the norm as a
side-effect for exploring ALL sound.

Jand... any chance of an altruistic transcription of the
Squarepusher I.J?

But all mags do it. It makes things easy. They could have a
piece of wire with five markers and then highlight the
number of markers to show how good an album is. It'd stick
with the wire theme then.

synopsis of an album if you want to check quickly how good
it is, like in the TV Times.

What about the editor, Rob Young.. he does reviews as well.
I have ambiguous feelings about his comments cos he is quite
opinionated and ain't afraid to print it. There is a gas
letter attacking his Flaming Lips review and he prints a
defence with... " ... well, that was my opinion so - tough!"
(paraphrased) at the end. Classic! His reviews also seem to
be based on just a few listens, and like was mentioned
above, it can take months to explore some of the stuff we
like... Confeild, DoYouKnowSq.. etc.. buthis descriptions
and use of language is great so i kind of forgive him
too....Nuts!

that IS normal mate... it's a journalist not saying what he
thinks people want

Reading a negative but well written review of a piece of art
which I personally enjoy, is great. I can take the points
made and reject them. It stirs the mind and the
imagination... it provokes debate and exploration of the
stuff. Leave the out-of-ten stuff to the masses... that is
serves them best.

Well, I meant the hyperbole. I can deal with lit reviews in
the broadsheets but the Wire writers seem to view writing
about music as a creative act in itself. I was being a bit
tongue in cheek with the marks out of 10 comment, but I DO
find their reviews as an opportunity for the writer to
express themselves rather than their interpratation and
analysis of the music. But maybe I'm just thick.

jonesy.. i kinda thought you were being sarky alright! I see
what you mean about the Wire guys being that way, but i see
it as pure enthusiasm. I get the feeling they really enjoy
what they are writing about. I find the Pitchfork reviews
the same. .... high on real enthusiastic integrity, no
matter what the opinion. Its all relative anyway. I suppose,
if you have 20 peolple writng hyperbole intesive articles,
10/20 of em will be talking wank and 10/20 will be pouring
out their genuine thoughs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hooray!

Writing is a creative act, but perhaps not review writing.
Thinking that writing about the artistic creations of others
as being art in itself is frankly egotistical. I guess it
all depends on what you view as being art. Personally I
wouldn't call a review 'art'. At least none of the one's
I've read :D
I agree with jonesy, I wish that reviewers didn't try so
hard to impress us with their prose; it just comes off as
incredibly self-indulgent and it's only success is to give a
few snotty students the chance chance to seem intelligent by
pretending to understand it all.
Of course, I hate it when reviews go completely the other
way and make a reviewer just sound thick. There's a fine
line between being descriptive and being a wanker.

i have described raves and concerts to freind abroad via
email and i have reviewed albums and i feel i genuinely pour
out how the music has grabbed me, its reference points, what
I think of it.

My mates know that i am just saying what i feel even if they
don't agree. I am not pretentious doing this, although some
knob who didn't know me who'd read it mught think.. "what a
twat!".

So i just read the Wire with the assumptionn that the
writers ARE into it, ARE genuine, HAVE ontegrity. Why?
Because that mag does seem to be totally open minded and
free from commercial restraint. If i am being led down the
garden path, so be it! But i trust my own judgement and i
believe i have made a good call and the result is a
satisfying, stimulating read on a broad range of music every
month. Lovely!
