old people listening to idm/braindance/etc.

hevquip from an egren's coffee shop on 2001-08-21 18:02 [#00023701]

when i'm real old, i'll still be listening to aphex twin,
autechre, jega, cylob, squarepusher, and whatever else comes
up between now and then. i wonder what people are going to
think of me because it seems odd to other people, not just
an old man listening to that kind of music (although my
computer teacher listened to techno and he's 60 or so) but
the music itself is odd to others.

heavquip (japes remix) from London on 2001-08-21 18:26 [#00023705]

yeah. i'm gonna love playing all my cds to my grandchildren
(presuming my bollocks don't fall off or something).

"grandpa, what kind of music did you listen to?"
"i used to listen to this..."
*sticks on an afx cd*
"aah! memories!"
"that's shite and boring grandpa"

so then i'll kill them and go and live in los angeles. it'll
rule!

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-08-21 19:24 [#00023714]

Them: "What's your favorite song?"
Me: "Alberto Balsalm"
Them: "Who in the what now?"
Me: "It's electronic music, this guy Aphex Twin"
Them: "Oh you mean like techno music?"
Me: "Not exactly"
Them: "Well does it have words?"
Me: "No"
Them: "So like trance music?"
Me: "Well its computer generated/synthesized music"
Them: "So your favorite song is made by a computer?"
Me: "I'll destroy you and everything you stand for"
Them: "I have to go now"

I get that alot.

i hate having to explain to people what i listen to. i think
it helps to say abstract or experimental that way they know
it means it's not normal electronic music.

ross on 2001-08-21 21:29 [#00023745]

i usually say it's mostly not danceable/it's abstract..

ross on 2001-08-21 21:29 [#00023746]

although i'd dance to it, and i'm sure others here might..

Gonzola from stockholm on 2001-08-21 21:43 [#00023755]

oh yea, i love to dance to aphex etc.

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-08-21 23:16 [#00023777]

I already am old..twice the age of some aphex fans..:(

pauwl from here at the moment on 2001-08-22 00:04 [#00023784]

Back in the 60/70s, elvis was quite cutting edge, people who
were between 10 and 30 years of age probably said they would
never stop listening to elvis, now they still listen to
elvis and it sounds like a load of old shite to most of us
young 'uns, times change, your gonna get left behind wether
you like it or not, you're gonna play that cutting edge
electronica (as you think it is) to your grandchildren and
they shall laugh and steal your slippers.

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-08-22 02:15 [#00023822]

I dance to a lot of aphex...not like a dance I could do with
anyone else like wierd interpretive shit. I dance to Boards
of Canada alot too, they have those slow steady beats. Oh
and I dance to squarepusher's - Tommorow World all the time,
I love that track, I'll be bumpin' to it until I'm 92.

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-22 02:19 [#00023826]

I think I may "grow out" of music at about 30-40 years old.
It seems to happen to everyone, I hope it doesn't happen to
me. But then again, most people don't like music anymore
because they think the shit in the charts is the only music
that exists. My dad used to like rubbish like Travis etc
until I showed him some of my good CDs he would have never
heard of before. In return, I also like bands he liked as a
child/teenager such as The Velvet Underground, the Beatles,
David Bowie, Bob Dylan etc.

^^greenranger^^ from not here on 2001-08-22 02:33 [#00023839]

one time in history class, the teacher asked around the room
what kinda music we listened to and like right away i
thought aphex twin... but how to explain it? no one else
here listens to that except fer my friend chad two seats in
front of me.. so i whisper to him "hey tell him we like
aphex twin's music" and he's like alright and he raised his
hand. the teacher called on him and he said "techno" o boy
that wuz bad. the teacher wuz like " oh you mean you listen
to like stuff by Eiffel 65 and Moby?" ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
shhhhhiiiiiiiiittttttt that sucked! good thing i didn't
raise my hand =P

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-22 02:36 [#00023847]

Yeah, when I told my teacher once that I liked indie he said
"what, like oasis?" They were popular at the time but I
thought they sucked. I replied with "No, decent bands you
haven't heard of, ASSHOLE" and the whole class laughed. This
may or may not be true.

Quadrapelegicrobotikev from Philadelphia on 2001-08-22 02:44 [#00023858]

that's hilarious, my one teacher was a lesbian that wore
turtlenecks to cover the bruises from her butch lover's
chocking fests...

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-22 02:49 [#00023862]

Hehe, I had a teacher who was a lesbian. The funny thing was
that she was teaching us sex education. So when she asked us
if we had any questions, everyone asked things like "why do
you sleep with other women?". Even when she explained
herself people kept asking, until one guy asked "why does
our PE teacher always keep scratching his balls?". She
replied with "maybe he doesn't wash enough"... so the next
day we told him she said this, she broke into tears later
after a big argument. Etc.

Aaah, those were the days.

oysterclam from brooklyn on 2001-08-22 04:57 [#00023895]

Dodecha from Norway on 2001-08-22 06:29 [#00023929]

Them: What music do you listen to?
Me: its called IDM, but that doesn't describe it very good
Them: Can you describe it better?
Me: The more fucked up with wierd acidy and cruched sounds,
the better
Them: You're wierd
(they walk away)

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-22 06:33 [#00023930]

I let my mum listen to some of my tracks and she said
they're actually quite good.

Barrett, Syd from Toronto on 2001-08-22 06:39 [#00023931]

my mom likes pretty much anything i like as long as there's
not much screaming in it (i.e. certian NIN songs)

fan of the phat beats that aphex pumps out and whatnot
though.

rF from a warm place on 2001-08-22 16:05 [#00024146]

I played SAW85-92 to my dad once, and he said it sounds like
relaxation music. Then I played him the RDJ album (in the
car, as he was driving) and this is what he said: (pointing
out a nearby motorbike's engine noise) "You should sample
that for one of your songs. At least it keeps a steady
beat!". So basically what he's saying is it's either too
repetitive (saw85-92, mike & rich) or not repetitive enough
(rdj album, go plastic etc.)... Bah. He also thinks I can
make music better than SAW2.. Although he does quite like
the music by actual bands like Tool, Living End, early
Metallica etc. I think anyway...

My mum likes NIN, Marilyn Manson, Gravity Kills, Garbage,
Faith No More, Filter, etc...

Gonzola from stockholm on 2001-08-22 16:36 [#00024162]

what is it about mothers, i thought my mum was the only mum
who liked electronica...perhaps they're a electronic kind of
spieces or something....hmm
anyway, my mom likes aphex, kraftwerk, autechre(pronounces it
au-taaek-re), robert normandieau(!)

hevquip from an egren's coffee shop on 2001-08-22 16:59 [#00024171]

i've played jega in the car with my dad and he didn't seem
to mind it. he asked me mostly about how to make it. i also
played sawII in the car with my uncle and dad and they said
it sounded like a whale. my mom likes to listen to newer
metal and hard rock and also rap/hiphop. there was also this
drunk/stoned guy at my house when i was playing the rdj
album and he said it was like led zeppelin (sic).

I do wonder whether sometimes parents say they think this or
that is pleasant because they are just trying to be
pleasant.

I've never felt that parents genuinely like music like Aphex
its not their generation really. I don't think they genuinly
appreciate it so I'm not gonna really live in a fantasy
world about it.

i let my dad listen to Go Plastic on my headphones and he
found it very intresting, to my suprise because this isn't
accessible music by far. he said it was very "progressive".
Then i let him hear hard normal daddy but wasn't as
intrested, he wanted me to put go plastic on again
