William Gibson is one my fave writers in any genre...most sci-fi is just pulp, Gibson turns it into literature...
And yeah, PK Dick is good...great ideas but often pretty poorly written...His life story is a good a read as his books; that's pretty rare for a writer....
I've liked what i've read of Greg Bear as well...my other-half loves his stuff...

the bit about him being a poor writer...his writing is lucid, economical and brilliantly vivid..that's a style you develop when you write as many short stories as he wrote..making every word count!

I agree with ya flea...but a lot of his style comes from having to write quickly against a deadline and/or word limit; it was kinda forced on him...& you can't underplay the affect of amphetamines on him & his style (and entwined in his themes as well...)...
I do like the style...but just can't help feeling we never got to see the full extent of his talent...just the tip of the iceberg...Hopefully his unpublished stuff will eventually appear & we'll see something of the real PKD...

Jand: he did have a raw, often even clumsy style. It was madde up for by the power of his visions. Some of his books are not much more than acid trips made literature (Galactic pot-healer being a case in point). He's up there with Burroughs in writing from the other side, in my book.
Also, your comment about having to write fast against the deadlines reminded me of another very important SF/F author who made pulp noble:
Michael Moorcock.
There is a dedication in one of his collections saying that "This book is dedicated to the time when if the story could not be written in 24 hours, it wasn't worth being written"
Another very important if not prolific name:
J.G. Ballard

PKD = God ok ? End of debate. As for Red Dwarf, I never found it remotely funny. Punchlines that pretty much always end in something beginning with the "smeg" (whatever the heck it means) irritate me. It's definately not what I call science fiction. It's shitty comedy in a space opera setting. nuff said !
PKD on the other hand is science fiction at it's best.

I wasn't trying to badmouth PKD as he is one of my fave writers, I really love his shit, OK? But have you read Lem? His stuff pisses on most american SF without as much as breaking a sweat. And now Holywood makes another version of "Solaris" which was originally Lem's finest book , made film by Andrej Tarkowski. Stupid fucking holywood bozos.....

Good choices. A scanner darkly is his unsung masterpiece. His style got refined by then and some of the parts in that book are just unbelievably trippy but still controlled. Throw in Ubik and you are a winner.
