I'm lazy ! Can't be arsed to get into rap/hip hop/rnb. I try and listen to as much as possible but lately I've gotten fixed on electronica/braindance/idm/whatever and my knowledge in jazz and classics has been pretty stagnant for a while. Too much fecking music - too little time auugggh.

untrue the origins or rap are quite noble. political and social commentary and whatnot. Now it seems to me that it's all "Yo man gonna fuck that ho then Imma gonna cap you in the face. You better reco'nise yo" but then again I'm pretty uneducated in the rap ball court...

"ahhh laserbeak thats so sweet......" thank you
"why don't they save the rain forrest too" That would be nice but this is a different subject. To my understanding ghettorap originally comes from people who are fed up with the situation in the ghettos. I don't think the whole glorification of being a gangster and killing people has a positive effect on the condition these people live in. It makes more sence to do something positive
"WORLD PEACE!!!!!!! hehe" you're very "cool" for trying to mock me...

what's this "ghetto rap" stuff? there are more rappers who live in the ghettos than anywhere else, but the thing is you've never heard their music because THEY ARE IN THE GHETTO. unless you yourself live in the ghetto, and hate your own kind i suppose, the only rappers you've ever heard.... don't live in ghettos. they live in mansions unless you listen to underground hip-hop, and you don't because you wouldn't be making threads like this if you did.
hip-hop heads don't hate "ghetto rappers". they hate jiggy rappers and thugs. "ghetto rappers" is what people who don't know anything about hip-hop hate.

your generalizations show your ignorance and some of these posts are borderline racist.
there is good music in virtually all genres and if you base your whole opinion of a genre on what you see on mtv then you are really missing out on some good music.

TonyFish I agree
I HATE "RAP" (meaning gangsta rap) All this gangsta "i'm gonna fuck yo momma an' bus' a cap in yo' ass" is unadulterated commercial crap. Just a teenage fashion craze. I'm amazed that the "rappers" don't feel like utter juveniles spouting their bullshit.
I love hiphop and rapping is a worthy component of a hiphop or electro/breakdance track.

I don't names of modern rappers... wtf has that got to do with anything?! Do you not have pirate radio in the US
I can assure you, similar lyrics are common place
I grew up listening to T La Rock and MC Shan, and rapping was good but you're too young to remember such class acts.

i'm saying that you're 10+ years off. you're thinking of NWA and Ice-T which was a long time ago. basically i'm calling you out on a poorly constructed argument; if you're going to criticize the popular rap of 2002 then at least say something relevant to it. i can't stand a lot of what's popular but even i've heard enough of it to know it's a far cry from threats of murder and rape. you think white girls like that stuff? think again. the stuff that comes out now has to have lyrics that appeal to the pop audience, and no.. that doesn't entail "i'm gonna fuck yo momma an' bus' a cap in
yo' ass".

you mean negativism? in america, mtv and urban radio play rap that talks about 1) lovey dovey stuff 2) repping crews (eg: labels, groups, posses) 3) repping yourself as the best in the game 4) talking about your material wealth and 5) getting high 6) women are scum 7) lastly and least often, social commentary.
depends on your POV of those 7 things.

The popular hip hop that they play on MTV and radio make my blood boil. I feel sick to my stomach when it comes on.
But I know it's just the tip of the iceberg... there's good hip hop. It isn't my thing, I don't listen to it but I respect it, and there's more to that genre than just money, drugs, chicks and bustin' caps.
I know shit about hip hop, but even I can see all the ignorance in this topic.

Being negative in rapping isn't bad, it's just like singing the blues really.
I dislike the thuggism, as per one of your previous posts.
My main gripes with modern "rap" is that: 1. it's rarely accompanied by a funky electro beat (but hey, times change).
2. the thuggism, and the subsequent endorsement by the likes of MTV etc that this is hip and trendy

there is even good "thug" rap.
quasimoto for example raps about "busting caps" and "looking under some girls dress" and "stabbin a nigga in the chest with a pitch-fork" and that album (the unseen) is one of the best hip hop albums to surface in the last couple years.
he also raps about stopping the "black on black" cuz "that shit is worse than a klan attack"
so i am making 2 points. 1 generalizing that all rap sux only shows close-mindedness and ignorance.
2 just because someone raps about shooting people doesn't mean they are pro violence. often they are rapping about what they know and/or grew up with. and often, they are rapping in character (eminem does this). if guns and shooting were a major part of your life it would probably influence your music.
and, rappers aren't the only ones writing about murder. here are a couple non rap artists that write about killing people and/or fucking them.
1. bob marley 2. johnny cash 3. trent reznor 4. jon lennon 5. roger waters 6. marylin manson 7. Astrobotnia (part 1) thats all i can come up with off the top of my head.
so is it the "thug" lyrics that you hate or just that its black people singing them?

i love tons of "thug" hip-hop. it can be done really well or it can be very sloppy and insultingly juvenile. my taste in hip-hop just isn't limited to thug rap but everything has its place.
