vinyl...why?

why do you buy vinyl?
do you use it for mixing?
do you like how music sounds played on vinyl?

I don't buy it.

No.

Yes. In some cases, it sounds better than CD.

it sounds better
it's cheaper

mixing with cds is lame

we have parties with two turntables
who ever wants to spin brings thier records

why buy cds when they can be downloaded? vinyl is bigger

it has a better sound if mastered properly and is a 120
plus gram press

i still buy cds too but you gotta love vinyl

Vinyl has more warmth, just sounds better. If you could see
the sound vinyl looks like a polygraph test nice flowing
lines, cd's are pixelated with square edges. Regular
consumers wont notice a difference, but music connoiseur's
musicians producers notice. Vinyl is the best medium for
music, notice you cant buy 8tracks or player's anymore and
tapes are pretty obsolete, but you can buy $3000 and up to
$8000 dollar turntables and $250 dollar stylus(needles).
Cd's are convienent to listen to in your car, but i hate how
the bottoms are exposed if they would have designed them
like a minidisc so the surface is protected and couldnt be
scratched it would be much better, vinyl is exposed too but
you dont have to insert vinyl through a slot that will
scratch it a little everytime you put in the car cd player.
You can still find vinyl that is up to 60 yrs old that can
still be played and may be in mint condition, in 60 years
will there be many cd that old that are still playable? i
doubt it. And of course for Dj mixing vinyl is a must
especially if you plan to cut or scratch.

I only like cd's, maybe because I don't have a record
player. Plus it would be quite inconvenient to have a
record-man (like a cd-man) Is the clicky pop sounds what
attract people to them?

but that's something that's added to every track whether you
want it or not. with cd's you can include it if you really
want, but it's not there to annoy you when you don't

I enjoy vinyl for home listening purposes, but for mixing
and things I think vinyl has lost it. It is SO much
easier to mix stuff with a CD player or computer. When I
have parties and shit, I just turn on winamp, arrange the
tracks, and have the fade function on so it fades the tracks
for you.

Vinyl is also cheaper, and jimisteel is correct, vinyl has a
much higher sound quality. As CD's are limited to 1411
kbps, vinyl has no limit, so the sounds can remain unchanged
in the final format.

vinyl is NOT cheaper than cds, but i'm prepeared to
sacrifice that

its more of a product, more aesthetically pleasing in so
many different ways, holding it in your hand, smelling it,
playing it the wrong speed because you forgot to look or the
speed is written wrongly, and yes it sounds better, and
(this is the best part) you can watch it going around while
its playing!

wat i dont get though is why people say vinyl sounds better
than cd. to me, it sounds a lot less good, but then again,
ive got a crappy turntable...

if only i could listen to my vinyls in my car...

sound. i can't remember the last time i heard a record on a
record player........i don't know many people who own
records or the players.

i have a pretty big vinyl collection that i've been given or
picked up here and there. but i've never listened to one
album cos i don't have a playa....i need to find somone with
one so i can hear what i'm missing =0)

as far as vinyl being cheaper....i dunno i always thought it
was more expensive?

Taken from http://www.r3mix.net:

Myth 2. Vinyl records are the best because they are
analog while digital sampling ruins the sound.

Reality check: Vinyl is a very primitive recording medium.
The artifacts, pops, and lack of dynamic range make Vinyl
far inferior to CD. CD's sampling rates and 16-bit word
length provide *more* information than the human ear can
detect. Audio compression proves that you can remove up to
4/5th of the data from a CD and still come up with equal
sound quality in a blind test using real world material.

Reasons I dislike vinyl include the popping/clicking (I
honestly cannot see how anyone can enjoy surface noise
interfering with the original music), the space limitations
(having to flip the record every 10-15 mins depending on the
quality it was mastered at), the easy degradation of the
vinyl (this is less of a problem if cared for properly, but
I still have to use a carbon fibre cleaner to remove any
excess dust particles before I play my records), and
finally, the fact that it isn't a portable medium.

On the other hand, vinyl covers are usually better, vinyl as
a whole feels like a much more 'special' music medium, and
vinyl has stood the test of time for many, many years now.

The dynamic range of CDs I find are very thin. =
digital.... zeros and ones. :S

The vinyl sound is so warm and cuddly!
I also like vinyl for collectoring perpurses!

I generally prefer vinyl ,though its less convenient in many
ways. There's just something more magical and interactive
when placing a needle down on a record. CDs are cold and
clinical. However, when in your car or whe falling asleep
CDs are the only choice.

BTW Do burned CDs deteriorate over time? There's no seal
right?

thats bullshit cuz i can hear the difference between
dvd-audio and cd.. dvd is way better at a 96 sampling rate.
vinyl has no sample rate..

new sonic youth album on vinyl 12 dollars cd is 19 dollars
and this at the same store!!

and finnally has anyone ever been to a RAVE. the music is
so loud and bassy and clear and that shit is all vinyl..
i've seen dieselboy life and that shit is no fucking winamp

you guys are too anal....vinyl was good but cd's are just
the way forward. I don't like having to get up and swap
sides and although the sound may be SLIGHTLY different, I
think its a matter of opinion if its better or not. The
music is stored digitally anyway before put onto the medium
so on cd you're more likely to be hearing it as the person
made it

its like people moaning on about MD's being lossy...it gets
pretty boring

Vinyl is often cheaper for me to buy. When I was living in
Nottingham, which are well stocked with vinyl, I picked up
sooooo much new stuff that 1)isn't available on Cd or 2)was
just way, way cheaper. I got about four ninja tune albums
for £2.99 including Wagon Christ and flanger.

well i buy vinyl because:

it feels more meaningful than a cd
it sounds somehow better
it mixes better
it takes up more room :)
the covers are usually far greater
vinyls are harder to get (at least here)
vinyls make me feel special :)

I think people love the distortions on vinyl. Yes, vinyl can
handly a higher range of frequencies but they distort the
audio a lot. The needle touches the vinyl so every time you
play it, a layer is being scraped off and the needle is
slightly damaged. Vinyl also needs almost impossible perfect
conditions(no dust/scratches, perfect balance/weight/speed)
to outperform a decent CD player.

if i was going to buy any album now it is going to be vinyl
it is easy to get the player connected to Pc and make your

with vinyl i thnk it is more of an experience and homeyness
you sit at home and listen to the record

cds are good

10 good reasons for vinyl

1. it looks nicer.... like a treasure almost...
2. seeing the records spin and watching the label is
awesome, regardless what type of music it is
3. you need to do researches in the few record stores that
still carry vinyl.... which is cool..
4. popping and clicking can be avoided if you clean your
records properly. a good needle is also needed. and a good
player as well... if it still pops, what the heck, it's
atmospheric
5. when you browse through records in the store, people
think you're cool and stare at you, because you are browsing
these old large black plates.
6. vinyl is more limited than CDs. it gives them a
rare-status.
7. flipping the record is great, because you know exactly
where that particular song is.
8. it is cool to get a record, talk to you friends meanwhile
and tell them how great this record is, while putting it
on.
9. vinyl can be coloured or even pictured, which is cool.
10. they have different sizes. and that is
also.........cool!

;)

I forgot to rip a few records a few years ago when I did my

My record collection is still stored on spinning plates ...
just at about 200x LP speed on my hard drives. Progress
