Hasn't mixing mp3's with laptops kinda killed both vinyl and
cd?

mmm...s'pose that's another story,eh?!!

You'll have to pry records out of some people's dead hands.

check it.

I want to spin live over the internet on this site.

It would be cool to have a time schedule set up and have
members of this message board spin live over the internet on
this site or have a site set were we could do that.

I guess i could record a mix and put it up on the net
somewhere. does anyone here have a DJ set up on the net.
or mixed tapes etc?

If you think this is a cool idea elaborate on some ideas on
how we could spin livestream over the net. other wise we
could lay down set's convert them to mp3 and put them up,
the thing is it would be a long mp3 like 20-30 minutes, and
not many would want to download something that big,

i always asked myself this question:

what happens to the cd booklet that comes with loads of info
and picture when you buy the album on vinyl?

i never compared what info is on the cd version and vinyl
version, as i only buy them once, either on lp or cd.

sometimes there is a sheet in the sleeve.... with all the
artwork from the booklet and/or even more things :)

i see, so there's no info/artwork lost, good!

i thought that in cases where everything couldnt fit the
vinyl sleeve, they did a sleeve that opens up, à la micheal
jackson's thriller.

k-rock is on vinyl and no cd, what more reason do you want
to get a turntable?

I have a very small vinyl collection (given as a gift).
Because I do not own a turntable/record player, I have not
listened to it. Anyone have any advice on equipment and
purchase prices?

i would like to buy more vinyl...but...
my turntable is broken..
and im always going back and forth between two houses... i
can take all the cds i want in my bag...whereas i would need
a bunch of heavy crates to transport the vinyl every
week...

and... i can find a lot more on cd around here... i dont
mind ordering things...but i like being able to walk into
the store and buy it...

also.. a good portion of my listening to music time is spent
in my car, or in places where i cant bring a turntable..like
in school, or walking around and whatnot

"16-bit word length provide *more* information than the
human ear can detect."

um... and thats an advantage how?

"dude, if this was on vinyl, we totally wouldn't be able to
hear what we can't hear anyways, but with cds, WE KNOW IT'S
THERE!"

sine707 made a comment about there being different sizes of
records...Well there are different sized cd's as well. I
have a few 80mm disc. They are little 21min cd's. Pretty
nifty...

lots of albums that can only be bought on vinyl, that was
prbably already sayed, i was too lazy to read off of that

I tell you one reason I think vinyl is good. If you really
into underground "IDM" tunes... its a fair bet that most
singles and even some albums are going to be vinyl only. So
its good to have a spare turntable laying around. And cost
is another thing... most of the time its pretty cheap

My g/f's parents have got reel-to-reel tapes of the Beatles
albums and a player in working order too. Its weird to see a
Mission Impossible style player play the Beatles.

To the guy who said "everything is mastered on digital
anyway"... that's not true. recording studios use high
quality analogue tape for masters.

and it's true that 16 bits per sample can encode more
musical information than the ear can detect.. within a
certain dynamic range.. but analogue source material can
"hold" almost infinitely more than that, in dynamic range
that's only limited by the resolution of the material
(record or tape) and quality of the reproduction mechanism
(stylus or magnet.)

it's like film vs. digital photography. each has its place,
but digital can only ever be a limited reproduction of an
analogue source. if the source is crap to begin with, who
cares, but if it's valuable source material, it's better
archived by analogue means - truer to the original.

the only arenas in which digital surpasses analogue are
convenience and cost. so whichever is more appropriate for
you and the source is the right choice. that's all there is
to it.

"that's not true. recording studios use high
quality analogue tape for masters."

in the studio sense, I stand corrected, but I was more
talking about electronic music, made by people in their
bedrooms...is this still the case?

and you can't get 5.1 analogue mixing can you? (!?) i'd say
that's more of a benefit than just convenience and cost

A good vinyl cut always sounds better than a cd - plus
recods are great - biig beautiful things you can dj with
which show off the artwork - just great things

no, I like vinyl a lot, its just i'm going to be spending my
money on cd's from now on (unless for sampling)

I like the size of cd's, vinyl to me can be a bit of
pain....i'm not gonig to get into which is better because it
reallydoesn't matter, some people prefer tapes, let them
listen to tapes

need a record player for those thousands of good house
techno and hip hop - funk - disco whatever records that are
vinyl only and hard to find - you can't not have one -
remember in the us ib the 1940's thhe government collected
shellac records from peoples houses to make armaments - a
whole generation of music was lost - like scarce folk
records etc - need to dig the crates and get good music no
matter how old it is

shelves neatly ordered :)

you smell your vinyls? Strange ;-)

1. I buy vinyl for the physical aspect: its bigger and more
fun to hold in your hands. Besides that: vinyl remains their
value mostly. Cd's mostly dont.
2. no.
3. Yes, but not all the time. I listen more often to mp3's.

i buy vinyl just because a lot of the music i like is still
released on that format only. no other reason whatsoever.

sounds clearer and louder and better for dj'ing

tangeable, material massive thing requires important music
these days, good QC

golden nostalia fun

records tend not to disappear like cd's and mp3's

Isn't history funny!

Vinyl is more expensive than CDs now.
CDs are better quality than vinyl.
mp3s sound better than click-hiss-pop-wobble vinyl.

no no, CD is better quality in your opinion, it's not a
fact, cause CD cuts off certain frequencies, vinyls has them
all.

I've discussed many times how the CD format imposes
limitations on the recording quality, whereas vinyl if
mastered and played with good equipment will have a higher
quality.

See previous ramblings here:

Anyway, I'm off out in a minute to try and buy the new
Rephlex VINYLS! Not released until Monday, will I suceed in
blagging an early copy? Let's hope so.
