does gender really affect ones musical taste? plus an extra: how many girls dig speedy j?

i really don't see any point of this 'girls don't like AE'
yada yada.

i actually live with trhee guys who really DON'T like any
idm as much as i do.

but alas, i don't know any girls nowadays. i actually have a
bit of a phobia against big girl crowds.

but i'd like to know, how many girls like speedy j? i was
once told it is "very male" music. is it?

I hate to be sexist but it appears that men overwhelmingly
have passion for music. I don't know any women who have the
same obsession with music as I, or any other of the males I
know, have. I can't work it out.

Women have an equal capacity to appreciate music and yet for
some reason they don't build on any interest in it. Hmmm.

You being female, maybe you can enlighten us? Do you have
many female frineds who like IDM or have an intense love of
music?

most women listen to music as background music
not really listening to it-if you know what i mean
at least the women i know

well i think those heavy metal death metal etc. bands for
one attract more males because of the primal, cavemanlike
quality that kind of music has. that might be complete
rubbish, though.
as for idm, i can't see why girls should be less receptable
to it, but then again, this is the case, it seems...

i have one female friend who loves idm and does her own
music, dj's and sings.

she is propably my only female friend :)

i consider myself very intensely into idm, although i only
try to do some dj'ing.

What, while they do the dishes? (Sorry)

Maybe its nurtured more in males. but then what could you
call a more stereotypical female leisure pursuit?

i must say i was surprised when i went to my fave section in
the local shop (the 'idm-ish' section) the other day and
found that the spot was taken by a girl, browsing thru MY
cds ;) there aren't enough of them

Me and jonesy disussed this issue a couple of days back and
what I told him then was approximately: women may have the
same interest in music as a spiritual agent, as man, they
just lack the anal record-collector impulse. They may need
only 10 CD's whereas I buy at least one a day.

but the love of music leads to the anal record collector
impulse (apart from in the case of trainspottery completists
who buy multi-formats of one relese or BOC laeidoscopes; u
know who u r).

yeah this is kind of an issue that's been brought to my
attention many times, I also opened a thread about women on
the board.
The only thing I can come up with is that men in general are
more interested in music than women I guess. I mean, I know
lots of girls who really enjoy very alternative and rare
music (styles), but all together I think it's us men that
are more interested in exploring new music.
There's no real explanation I guess.

Also when you take a look at music artists...
Electronica ----> almost only men
Metal ---> mostly men
Rap ----> mostly men
Great composers of classic music ---> almost only men

But than there's the more vocally (is that a real word?)
interesting R&B, pop and some rock. Often women go for the
vocals and not for the rythm.

whilst i really hate doing this "innate" talk and gross
generalisations - in general it seems that girls prefer
melody over rhythm,

damn .. its not making sense anymore ..

maybe its still engrained into the female consciousness, any
opinions they would have about music aren't valued anyway,
so why have opinions ...

MOOD, people. MOOD.

rhythm and melody are just parts of that.

Neetta, tells us more, tell us more. I too think that it is
not really true that men response to rhythm and women to
melodies. Here, at house/ techno/ d'n'b parties you have as
many women as men.

But anyway: loving music DOES NOT equate being a record
collector/ a bedroom critic. You can love music and really
"feel" it, without being able or having a need to
intelectualise it.

Fuck, I sound like a fucking PC pussy ass leftie pink-commie
fag here.

Exactly, we can discuss its cultural relevance and
references, but what one's spirit gets from the music is
beyond language.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-08-27 13:40 [#00367387]

it could, i guess be argued, that the music one likes, and
the degree of anal-iticity about it, corresponds to the
social construct, or the social role we construct for
ourselves .. :)

My Mum really likes Aphex Twin. Not all of it, just the
chilled out stuff. She told me last week she went out and
bought SAW 85 - 92 and listens to it quite a lot. I'm going
to but her SAW 2...

i was always prejudiced against speedy j. after all, he was
one of the founders of gabber and he did create 'poing' and
that other annoying track, 'pullover'.

i only recently learned he went idm after that. i hear his
latest is very danceable again, though

for indie rock. you know, vocals and guitars. also sometimes
punk rock (and by that i mean true punk, not pop punk). yea,
that's what's up.

I've known plenty of females who have an obsession with
music. Granted, its usually very shitty popular music...
I've never known any women (outside of this mb) that listen
to idm...

also, I am obsessed with music, but I dont have this so
called "anal record collecting" thing or whatever, I RARELY
buy cd's, it has to be something that really catches my
attention, such as Afx, because I don't have a lot of money,
and I'm usually spending it on weed anyway soooooooo =p

i seem to be the only girl in know who is as into music as i
am..... one of the first questions i ask a person is what
kind of music do they like. if they can't make up their
stinking minds and tell me some thing like "drrr, i duno,
all kinds..." i make them list the top five bands they
like.

i have been accused of liking music that more guys like then
girls, but what the fuck decides if a band or group is more
of a female or male sound (exemping singers like ani
defranko (barf).......

This is totally a personal observation, just what I'VE
noticed with the people around me. In no way does it reflect
the whole population of the world (though it may...)

Girls aren't as good music fans as guys are. I just don't
know any females that are as MADLY passionate about music as
I am. My uncles have massive album collections that span the
genres, while my aunts have about a dozen CDs that range
from pop to...pop...

And while there's some guys at my college that know (or
THINK they know) alot about music, I just notice all the
girls are really into is whatever's hot at the moment. The
stereotypical goth girls don't count as hardcore music fans,
because there's just something so wrong about trying so
hard. I bet their boyfriend's got them into what they're
listening to anyway.

Of course there's some very musically educated females
around this board that know what they're talking about, but
I don't know anyone like that personally. I do know some
guys who take it much more seriously.

But male or female, if you live where I do, you're probably
a musical knob, anyway.
