To see a post, a while back now, with a (jeez my head feels like mushy peas) guy relenting to free mp3 downloads. Obviously he doesn't represent the majority. It's something that iterests me.

I bet the people whose jobs it is to hunt down MP3 users and abusers have a few gigs of music on their personal harddrives. You'd be stupid NOT to!

I don't download MP3's for two reasons. I like to own the original CDs and sharing sites spread nasty virus'.

I download mp3s for these reasons:
To find rare/omitted tracks.
To get a taste of what something is like.
To hear unsigned artists (probably my favorite reason for d/l mp3s).
I buy original CDs of artists I like though. It's kind of stupid to d/l mp3s of entire albums, since A; mp3s ultimately sound like shit compared to CD quality recordings, and B; you get things like artwork and the intended reception of the work (ie, correct track order and ALL of the tracks, not some or half finished tracks).

I was wondering more about the long term future of the music industry. How mp3's interweave into the market.

I definitely empathize with the artists, electronic musicians in particular (d/l all the mainstream garbage you want). I feel we should support the scene, buying the music shows the corporate monkeys that this music is viable/legit/bigger than they think. One is basicly robbing the artist of their deserved $ and success/acclaim (if u aren't buying the music you've "sampled').
Something to think about anyway.

I DO buy music...and mp3 helps, not substitutes.
I'd rather have music through a stereo, not tinny little computer speakers.

hmmm
well, for the record, I always buy the music that I like, but i preview it in mp3 form first.
however, speaking as an artist who makes IDM, i dont really care if people buy my cds. If they all download it, thats fine with me.
why? well, its not like id make a fortune from the cd sales anyways. I dont think the difference would be that big...
so im just gonna make music and cds for the joy of it, and if people want to buy it or download it, doesnt matter to me, im just glad they like it.
no IDM artist can make a living from his releases (unless you put your music in commericals etc)
