Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste they
hurry past it.

-Soren Kierkegaard, philosopher (1813-1855)

** women can be included in that statement as well, how very
sad and true!!

For what purpose humanity is there should not even concern
us: why you are there, that you should ask yourself: and if
you have no ready answer, then set for yourself goals, high
and noble goals, and perish in pursuit of them! I know of no
better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great
and the impossible...
Nietzsche, unpublished note from the 1873

a lot of my mates are 1st year uni students so i hear a lot
of philosophy stuff

and they all seem to (as it seems the trend is among 1st
year uni students) fancy themselves as political geniuses.
oh well.

"The belief in truth is part of the elementary forms of
religious life. It is a weakness of understanding, of
common-sense. At the same time, it is the last stronghold
for the supporters of morality, for the apostles of the
legality of the real and the rational, according to whom the
reality principle cannot be questioned. Fortunately, nobody,
not even those who teach it, lives according to this
principle, and for a good reason: nobody really believes in
the real. Nor do they believe in the evidence of real life.
This would be too sad. "

- Jean Baudrillard, in "Radical Thought"

heptanary: you a philosophy student eh? moi aussi [sp?] -
cool cool, yeah, Nietzsche I think will always be on my
"island top 5" list of philosophers .. though some of this
post-structuralism/post-modernism is getting to me at the
moment .. :)

That Baudrillard quote is quite "Nitezchie".

LeCoeur - wicked quote - I must really read some Kierkegaard
- he's always intrigued me (ie. when referred to in passing
in books and what not) .. parently he was quite a strange
little chap, who published his books under all sorts of
strange pseudonyms?

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-08-20 10:11 [#00357210]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

:) guess so .. yeah, I think (although this is quite a
controversial area), that a lot of late Nietzsche has a lot
of post-modern elements in it. But yeah, Baudrillard is
quite provocative.

"truth is error"

"i'm afraid god is not dead for we still have faith in
grammar" (or something to that effect).

I have faith in generative gramar
Chomsky's linguistics seem to reveal a strong base for
anarchy. Even when himself avoids pointin that.

Points: 4605 Status: Regular

I'm not too familiar with Chomsky - can never remember which
side of the nature/nurture debate he was - was he the guy
that said we have an inherent language device?

i have faith in the irrationality of rationality? hermmm...
mmmhhh.. hehe

yeah
inherent language device
so inherent capacities for livin free and develop as humans

IMO the best way to approach him is through his attack on
Skinner. The dicotomy rational/irrational has never been
more well explained.

YOU SHOULD
That's part of the chaos theory

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-08-20 10:25 [#00357219]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

really? I'm not that familiar with the chaos theory .. at
the moment I'm trying to convince my lecturer, or at least
let him concede that truth may = error :)

Pretty hard, coz he's arguing from a 'credulous' point of
view, not absolutist or skeptic!!

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-08-20 10:27 [#00357221]

hey dude, can you recommend some text or something re: chaos
theory ??

A "credulous" point of view??

Sounds strange...

Anyway, truth equals error allways. Just a matter of time.

I read bout chaos in the net

But maybe u seen Pi (the movie).
That also has a lot of chaos theory in.

this is a direct quote from my lecturer:

"It's
very easy to set up a false oppositions: either we can be
certain of
something or else we must be deeply sceptical of it. If you
have those
two as your only options, then it's quite easy to generate
the sort of
line that I associate with post-modernist writers. However,
there are
plenty of other options: you might (and I do) typically
accept what
people say as true, but always reserve the right to revise
your beliefs
when more evidence comes in. This is what you might call a
'credulous'
as oposed to a 'sceptical' outlook. I suspect that without
being
credulous, communication between people would be impossible.
And I also
suspect that if you take Credulism seriously, none of the
alarming
(paradoxical?) consequences of reasoning about science will
follow."

smells fishy - but i'll persevere .. :) hehe

Yeah I've seen pi. i liked that syntax inbetween the number
business - too true.. sweet .. i'll have a look around!

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-08-20 10:33 [#00357231]

The counter example I think i have to try and refute is that
its possible for someone (in theory) to be unsure of being
unsure of being unsure of being unsure - ad. infinitum ?!

sure u will leave him cryin like a poor fool prayin for some
more of your illuminating knowledge...
That credulous way of reasoning will send someone like me
straight to a deep nihilistic state of mind...

If you take credulism seriously?

how seriously - as a certainty - then i've got him by the
scruff of his neck .. but I'll see what I can come up with
:) it sucks that language undermines it all

Shit that's one heck of an undergrad - spose its nice and
thorough .. 3rd year also - tho i finish in half a year ..
that's the way the system here works. Tho in all honesty,
with hons, i'll be finished in 1 and a half years .. main
interest continental philosophy, tho i don't mind dabbling
in a bit of logic (doing intro to meta-logic at the moment)
and did a bit of ethics in the past, but i've given up on
that concept :)

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-08-20 10:43 [#00357241]

I don't know .. i actually don't find reading appealing in
and of itself, its a bit of a struggle at times, so it's
quite nice to sit back and listen - also, with some of the
contemporary french stuff I reckon, I need at least the
lecture to guide me through the text a little, dunno -

eh?

sweet as,

yeah, logic audio is pretty cool hehe, so is fuzzy logic by
the sounds of it ..

mmm .. yes and no about taking them seriously, i think they
are talking about the same thing (at least recent stuff) the
analytic approach is tackling, just different ways to go
about it.
