i often disagree vehemently with people's opinions of supposed filler tracks on aphex twin, nin, radiohead, tool, dj shadow, bjork, etc. albums

No way man, if you want to fill space, you make your track as long as possible!
Short tracks fill up space? Quite contradictory, I think... :/

Most pop music is stuffed with filler. A couple of hits to sell the record, and a lot of songs that are just ''going through the motions''.
Big double albums can fall prey to filler... I think Drukqs is pretty good for having minimal filler, actually... Bit4, Aussois and Lornaderek are a bit useless, but that crap is a TINY portion of it. All the piano tracks hit the spot for me now, although it took some time.
And The Beatles' White Album has been accused of filler, but I say NO WAY... something new every song, eclectic like crazy.
As for Radiohead... no way do they have filler. You can tell they're giving it their all to make some satisfying albums, no useless uninspired tracks. Who the hell could accuse THEM of ''filler'', yeesh.

but ophecks there's a major difference between segue tracks and filler tracks.. filler tracks are meant to disguise having nothing to say (ie: not enough music to fill an album), segue tracks provide a cleaner transition between two full songs that don't sound good sandwhiched together

I have so many albums that are 95% filler. It annoys me when I buy a CD from the strenth of a single/radio play only to discover everything else is utter crap.

If you're talking about Drukqs, yeah, you're right, I guess they're not ''FILLER''. I could still do without these segue tracks. Which is why I don't consider them filler, exactly... I kind of consider them, erm, annoyances? But I think that album is pretty meaty. I don't see the point of these segues. BOC does little ditties that carry you to the next full lengther, and they do it nice and spiffy, they're almost as important as the bigger songs to me.
If you're NOT talking about Drukqs, well... bleh!

yea i was talking about drukqs specifically (though albums in general). the segues are also there for comic relief in an otherwise pretty humorless album, especially by aphex twin standards!

It's kind of a weird balance just randomly throwing in comic relief here and there. No real flow... but hey, that was probably his intent, to be annoying. Who else would put an answering machine message on an album...
But like I said, I don't see it as filler, but I've heard people refer to it as a bloated ''contract ender'' with filler, but I DON'T see it that way. But damn those segues! And damn that awkward word.

i agree w/ u people who have said this....
a lot of what most people consider "filler", i do not
especially those little short tracks, (like on Boards of Canada albums, or Drukqs)....
length isn't everything! ;)
hehe...... for me, those short tracks can be highlights themselves!
.....obviously, in helping the album to flow along..... but they can be great completely on their own too!

I like the progression of Drukqs why use filler tracks for a double album. I listen too it from begining to end cd one then cd two.

For some reason I like the majority of songs on all the cds I own..sometimes i don't really dig a track too much but it seems that over time as i enjoy the album, those tracks become more appetizing..

I skip lots of songs... I don't really listen to albums AS albums. I've listened to DSOTM straight through, and I like it a hell of a lot more when I listen to it in whatever order I want, whatever song I feel like listening to. So I don't experience filler... I'm not an ''album'' guy.
And with MP3... there is NO order to how I listen to things, now. I like it that way. If it's filler, I never hear it anyway.

i hate when people buy concept albums and say, there's a lotta filler on there. Dumbass's
Sure pop groups have to put filler to make the audience feel good about the release....if they buy it. Or maybe its the artist poor attempt to actually produce something that THEY actually wrote. and they usually suck i hate groups that don't write their own stuff..

You're thinking of "filler" as perhaps that white stuff that goes inside a twinky

I think its quite unfair to call some tracks fillers. If you make tracks regularly and take time on them you would understand what i am trying to say here... sometimes you make short tracks that rock and you put them on an album to create flow.... but when you put effort into making a decent track (even a short track) to put on an album.... all that time and effort.... to just call it a filler.... I just find that kinda disrespectfull....... I mean sure... for shits sometimes you wanna say stupid shit and put it on a intro or something... or a random interlude..... but most of the times..... many tracks have lots of thought put into them.... except for perhaps that 5 second druqks track.... or the magic window bullshit.... filler is a term for people to use that idolize an artist and are loyal fans.... but they cant believe they dont like a certain track... so they discard it and call it a filler....
