Are they legal?
I bought a new DVD recently from a 'reputable' store and
their catalogue said it was Multi-region.
It was actually Region 2 but they gave me a sheet of
hand-written details on how to hack it to region 0....

Is this legal??

Put it this way...it's unlikely the cops are gonna pop
around and arrest you for having a multi-region DVD
player...

I've seen region free dvd players in shop windows before!

I think modifying any piece of hardware you own is fine
(maybe not legally). I mean, if you buy a spade you're
allowed to sharpen the edge yourself or change the handle
w/o taking it to an "authorised dealer". Why should
electronics be any different?

It wasn't so much a hack though, it was just instructions on
how to change the region in the region set up menu...

Make sure that there aren't a limited number of changes-
some allow you to change region 4/5 times then get "stuck"
on the final one...
Anyone know if you can get region emulating "boot disks" for
dvds yet?

It is definately a multi-use one...but it's set as region 0
now for good anyways!

It was a hack, as it is in the dvd players Bios (same as
hacking pc bios) and although there are numerous sites
online saying how to do this - they always state it is for
home use only - and this was a shop selling the dvd's with
the hacks - illegal??)

So mine may have a hidden menu? It's a stand alone JVC type
thing. I was told sometimes you can do special combo's on
the remote to change it to all region but I wasn't sure if
it where true or not.

Keep in mind this may not be the JVC one you have....but try
anyways!

How to convert your JVC XV-2000 player into a multi-region
compatible machine

To convert this player to a different Region
Whilst most movies will play with the region set to 0, some
Region 1 or Region 2 titles require you to select the
correct zone before they will play
1. Press the Power button on the player to turn it off
2. Wait 5 seconds
3. Press and hold the buttons DVD Menu and On Screen on the
player together, and then press the Power button on the
player to turn it back on
4. Release the DVD Menu and On Screen buttons
5. Press the Standby button on your player, the display
should now show either "TEST 2", "TEST 4" or "TEST 6"
depending on the player region
6. Press the DVD Menu button on your player twice in a row,
the display should now show "000 5858"
7. By pressing the Up and Down cursors buttons, change the
first three digits until they read "02E"
8. By pressing the Right and Left cursors buttons, change
the last four digits until they read "0000" for Region Free,
"0101" for Region 1, "0202" for Region 2, "0404" for Region
4, "0808" for Region 8, and finally "2020" for Region 20.
9. If you experience difficulties with Region 4 discs,
change the above setting to "0458" and make sure that PAL or
NTSC is correctly set on your player
10. Press the Enter button on your player to confirm the
region change
11. Press the Standby button on the player to turn it off

12. Wait 5 seconds
13. Press the Standby button on the player to turn it on

My brother got a cool gift from his gf- a region free dvd
player that plays cd-rws, MP3s, video CDs and can burn cds
and rip DVDs to VCD. Amazing what you can buy in the middle
east...

I've got to help him link his laptop to it so he can burn
all his MP3s to CD next time I'm over his. It's sweet, he's
got that and an xbox linked to his bose "wave" stereo. It's
so tiny but has a really rich sound to it.

As I said.....yours may be a different Model.....if so,
search for the correct hack and do it!

Some systems require a scripting change, but hese can be
downloaded, burned onto a cd and ran through the dvd player
to update.....

Just give it a try and if no good, search the net!!

Apex DVD players are some of the most "hackable" models.
They also play a very large number of formats and are pretty
cheap as well.
