metropolis (1926) - fritz lang metropolis (1984) - georgio moroder metropolis (2001) - osamu tezuka
i've only seen the latest anime version, and i'd like to see the 1926 original. i guess i wouldn't mind seeing the 1984 one as well. anybody have thoughts/ comments on this?

I saw the 2001 version a month or so ago...That was a great movie...Didn't the same guy that did Akira have some involvement with it?

i saw the georgio mordor version
it is just the original with cheesy 80s music with it.
i heard clips of the music from the original, and it seemed much better.
of course since the movies so old, it looks cheesy alot.... but its a good movie over all
and the anime, while is similiar to the film, isnt an exact redo or anything... just borrows ideas. or so im told. didnt see the anime
but yeah metropolis is a huge milestone in movies.

i saw the fritz lang version some many years ago and it is a work of art adn troytelling.
i also saw the same version of the 1926 film, yet teh soundtrack was done by kraftwerk.
i love silent cinema! so, i suppose this would be the second version. i really wantedto see the anime, but from what i saw it just took the name, and posibly teh them, but it didn't look like the metroplois i'm familiar with.

I've heard SAW2 played over Lang's Metropolis can get very interesting, almost intentional in some places.

in regards to the anime, osamu tezuka was actually heavily influenced by lang's 1926 original whilst making his comic

there's even that one android chic in the 1926 film which is echoed by tima in the 2001 anime

Fritz Langs version is the best..... the Anime one was almost nothing like it.... then again im judging by 3 minutes of watching an anime version of my favorite film
in complete disgust for the idea of making it an anime .... the remake of it... was bullshit, they shouldnt fuck with silent classics.... take Nosferatu ,,,, the first vampire movie... they remade it into an atmospheric piece of crap and ruined a classic with a remake...
the only acceptible approach to remaking a Silent classic is to take out the soundtrack to Metropolis and put..... Shizuo on it.... or
take out Nosferatu soundtrack and put Venetian Snares.... and do some fucked up editing ... i dunno... anything but put it to sound and put it with color...... . they ruin it............ Ohh btw., im a film maker and within the next year will start on making my own silent movie..... i'll keep u posted....

silent music needs music without lyrics goddammit.... they put Type o Negative in a Nosferatu movie..... and that was a big mistake cause now its almost unwatchible.....

saw the original version clipped together from the original film, or what's left of it.
New score for it iirc, but it was pretty much mesmorizing.

the Moroder one is with Queen songs under it, and some parts have been colored in.
can you spell "shit"..? (even though I quite like some of Queens songs, not in this film. NO !)
the original is incredible.
haven't seen the animé one.

The original is entirely fantastic. Not seen the other two.
Adding new music to silent classics CAN work (cinematic orchestra's soundtrack to man with a move camera being the case in point - WOW), but it's very hard to interpret someone else's work without losing at least some of the original power.

it could be said that alex proyas's "dark city" is sort of a version of metropolis. very heavily inspired by it at least. i always liked that movie, except for the narration at the beginning, which was forced upon by the film studio.
