Some friends and I need some samples to make songs from.
Mostly we want ambient noises, not drum loops.

Does anyone know of some good websites for random noises?

Tonight we are going to bring a 4-track recorder to work and
record noises.

To create ambient textures I find it best just to carry a
mic and Minidisc recorder with me . . .

just do what FSOL do and sample ambience from movies.
DVD-ROMs and Total Recorder make it too easy. but it's
better if you "be like" meat beat manifesto and godspeed you
black emperor! and just carry a microphone around and tape
what you hear.
