I wasn't gonna review this as I did the rephlex show &
plaid but fuckit, Warp's magic bus magically broke down I
heard so maybe a lot of people were really dissapointed and
want to hear about it.
I will arrange this in chronological an easy to read list
format, for all of you who apparantly hate to read
paragraphs, as I recently discovered. The venue was really
nice right in the middle of Manhattan, it was 3 stories and
a roof. The bottom and top floor had live music, the middle
was a chill-out room which was playing the music from the
top floor via speakers. The roof was were most of the
potheads were, there was also a bar on the roof and a
half-pipe that noone was using.

Good: Somehow this 18 year olds ID I found who looks
nothing like me passed to get me in.
Bad: They wouldn't let me bring in my digital camera! I
brought it all they way there for you guys. Fucking
asshole bouncers.

Good: Arriving in time to hear Chris Clark's Diesel Raven
live.
Bad: Chris Clark hardly did anything but smoke ciggerettes
and drink something and occasionally do something on his
laptop, most of the time not even looking at the audience.

Good: Diesel Raven and Gob Coit were the only tracks
I recognized, so we heard at least 8 or so tracks of un- or
yet to be released shit. Some of it was fucking crazy, a
lot of it kind of hard floor dance music but with really
ill industrial rythms and melodies, it was great.
Bad: Some of it was shit. His last track was this scratchy
ambient track I wasn't really digging that went on for what
seemed like more than 10 minutes.

Good: DJ came up and played what seemed like a lightly
mixed version of Cock/Ver 10 (close to the original with
some extra echoes and such).
Bad: There is nothing bad about dancing your ass off with
300 other people (about 1/3 of whom were semi-attractive to
attractive females) and all shouting in unison "COME ON YOU
CUNT, LET'S 'AVE SOME APHEX ACID".

Good: Richard Devine stepped up with his 2 laptops.

Played a fucking amazing dance set. I have heard stories
about Devine being mad live, they were 100% true. Somehow
he makes dance music with electronica beats (I think when
you see him like dancing at his computer bobbing his head
back and forth really intensely and his face getting all
scrunched at the really good parts it helps him make the
mood). I had heard very little of Devine's music and
expected some more avant-garde abrasive type stuff for some
reason. Only a little of it was, and even most of that was
good. But man did he "tear up" the dance floor.
Bad: I had to leave to go to the upstairs floor so I could
catch a bit of Jamie Lidell's set, there were only about 15
minutes left, I had never heard his music.

Good: I caught Jamie Lidell's set just in time, he was
wearing this crazy ass outfit (god I wish they let me bring
in my camera), anyway, the part I caught he had an iBook
laptop which was kind of out of the way, he only used it
occasionally because he had a ton of hardware on the desk in
front of him. He also had a mic, and a guy standing next
to him, playing the saxaphone. He was playing lots of
industrial electronic dance type stuff, there weren't a lot
of people in the room compared to downstairs watching
devine, so I made my way to the front. He danced a lot
himself and when I got up to the front he broke out the mic
and put on some CRAZY vocoder effect, like something I'd
never heard, not robotic but made everything he said sound
like a screech, not a high-pitched or annoying but
uh...hard to explain. Then he laid out some hip-hopish
electronic beat and starting rapping INSANELY fast, doing
all the hip hop hand motions and everything, you couldn't
understand a word he said but it really looked like he was
really mcing well, and the sound that came out was just
nuts, I really can't describe it but it went perfectly with
the music he was playing. He put the mic up in front of the
saxaphone and that was quite strange. Then he put the mic
to his zipper and

as he moved his zipper up and down it sounded
exactly like a scratch on a record, so basically he
was scratching with the beat for a second. Keep in mind
none of this was really like hip hop, it was more like a
crazy white guy on speed rapping at 300x speed, all of what
I just said happened in about 5 minutes, he was sweating
profusely (or should I say prefusely, no wait, that comes
later =). Everyone cheered alot.
Bad: I went downstairs to get my friends and brother who
were reluctant to leave devine's room, by the time we got
back up Lidell wasn't doing anything anymore with the mic
and I wasn't as into what he was playing.

Good: Prefuse 73's set upstairs after Lidell. Honestly, I
didn't think it was amazing, I was really amped when he
played Point to B - off of Vocal Studies, and he played a
ton of other stuff I recognized from that album. I think
he played stuff from the 92 vs. 02 collection also. The
room was totally booked, my brother got right behind
prefuse and was like looking over his shoulder at what he
was doing, I was trying to get that close but couldn't. It
was really good, everyone was bopping their heads to
prefuse's exclusive hip-hop style. But it wasn't as
intense, maybe I'm not as into his music right now as I once
was, dunno. A lot of people who went told me it was their
favorite set of the night, so maybe I'm the wrong person to
ask.

Good: Luke Vibert's hour and a half DJ Set. This was
fucking great. He played a ton of old stuff, almost
entirely electronicish acid house. I danced the most to his
set than any of the others. (good: There were a ton of
attractive girls dancing to this too, bad: most of them more
than 5 years older than me)
My favorite part was when he spun Homewerk, and for at
least 20-30 minutes played totally cut up versions of all
four tracks of the EP (my favorite being "Acid 2000" which I
sung along and danced my ass off to). It sounded at parts
like he had four copies of it on four turntables, it was
nuts, but I

but I'm sure he had 2 copies. He is a great

DJ, and I really had a totally different experience
listening to that kind of music than I do listening to mp3s
of

dancish music.
Bad: I had to leave after Luke Vibert's set so I didn't get
to catch the closing Warp DJs, who I heard from Zeus

and other people played some more drukqs and squarepusher -
untitled (I heard most of this stuff at rephlex neway,

now I just need to see Tom and Rich live).

Good: Amazing night, great party.
Bad: I just spend a half an hour writing a review of a show
for people who probably won't read it or care! Oh

aphextwin.nu, why do I love thee?

I agree Xanatos. But I was definitely one of the people who
enjoyed the shit out of Prefuse 73 (I had never heard him
before).
I actually came for Luke Vibert, and I got to meet him
before his set! Great fucking guy, he even let me give him
my CD. I dug his set, but there could have been a little
more Wagon Christ and a little less fucked up jungle stuff
(was there a lot of Plug in there? I'm not familiar with
that material).

again with changing around what i said.

I never EVER said i was goin to toss cdrs on stage or
anything. Im not a jackass.
Alls i said is id like to give it to the artists. There are
other ways to do it... like... meeting the artists when they
artn playing...

And yes, it was a GREAT night.

Prefuse was my favortie, luke was awesome (BUT INSANE) and
jamie was INSANE. D'ntel was cool, but not exactly my
favorite. They had a singer, who also played guitar, a girl
accordian player, and a guy doing all the electronics. It
was like trip hoppy...

Richard Devine was good, but i didnt stay for all of it, as
i had to chose between upstairs and downstairs all the
time.

The dj set at the end was cool. I didnt stay for it all...
but they did play some drukqs and squarepusher, which is
awesome to listen to on massive speakers!

My only bad part of the night was that it ended! =)

ok, ok, sorry - you're right, that was someone else who said
you would "toss" the discs on stage, but you DID say that
you'd distribute your demos to artists and we (myself
included) thought it was a good idea to get their feedback.
so, who'd you meet and did you give them copies? if so, did
you give them the four track demo you were going to work on?

its ok. I just wanted to clear that up.

I met Luke Vibert, and talked to him for a few mins,
although sacharin talked to him for much longer (hes a HUGE
fan). He was really nice and friendly. I gave him a copy of
my demo (only 3 tracks) and he asked me about it, like how
to pronounce the name, and if it was all mystuff etc. And he
put it in his pouch he was carrying. Seriously an awesome
guy to talk to. sacharin gave him a cigarette, and we just
stood around and talked.

Then I also gave a demo to prefuse 73. There were lots of
people around, and he was busy, so alls i got to say was "i
really loved your performance, and i love Vocal Studies, and
could you check out my stuff" and he said sure thing, and
shook my hand... kinda like home boy style... you know what
i mean, i dont know how to explain it. first you shake, then
you lock your hands together... whatever... not important.
But yeah, he seemed really cool, just there was too many
people there to talk to him like we did with luke.

So yep. Thats it. I also just put some of my demos on tables
in the lounge area, and they kept getting picked up, so i
kept putting em down. So i handed out all my demos.

Hopefull they will be listened to and not thrown in the
trash!

But it was a fun experiance.

But most importantly the music ROCKED
=)

you know its funny...

people love free stuff

when id put the cds down on the table... i would see the
people, and theyd look at each other, and then grab at it
like "oooo free stuff weeee"

hehe

so my conclusion. FREE is the best way to reach people :)
