why the fuck did richard call SAW 85-92 SAW 85-92?!
I mean ambient, let's go back in time, brian eno, inventer
of this background furniture music... he's the inventer of
ambient, he pointed out certain rules. Like, it must have no
real structure like: a beginning a middle part and an
ending. Those are the main rules for ambient. But then AFX
releases his selected ambient works 85 - 92 wich isn't
ambient, sure it has certain vibes of ambient influence but
it's not ambient at all...
SAW II on the other hand is actually ambient, let's not
forget that, so why did he call SAW 85-92 ambient? It's a
great album imo, prolly his best one, but why, why ambient?

was he just fucking with our minds or what?

yeah there is some ambient pieces on it tho like "i" and
"Tha" and some other that is kinda ambientish.

I dont think Heliosphan, Pulsewidth Ageispolis, Green Calx,
We Are The Music Makers etc is ambient tho.

SAW 2 that is really ambient.

in an interview i've heard richard talk about what he
considers "ambient" music.
He said the most defining aspect was that ambient music has
no beats.

And then he said the only reason SAW 85-92 does have beats
in it is because actually his friends selected the tracks
that would make it to the album.

I dunno... it's probably bullshit (i can't imagine he didn't
choose himself what songs would be on his debut-album!), but
that's what he said. I agree though, the only true ambient
track on there is i

I think he named it like that because he wanted to sell more
records....

The record label he got signed to then really wanted a
ambient artist on their rooster (ambient was beginning to
blow up and it was kinda hot back then, yeah its hot now to
but u see my point).

The Orb was pretty big back then and R&S RECORDS wanted
someone alike.

So I think they took that name because it sound much cooler
than Selected techno works 85-92.

ambient can have beats. No problem, as long as there's no
beginning, middle and end in the tracks. Those are the rules
Eno came up with. Just because Eno didn't use beats doesn't
mean that ambient can't have beats.
I think Richard didn't really understand the term
ambient...
Ambient is furniture music... When you put it on it has to
become a part of the environment.

the boundaries of a genre

Ambient means only 'atmosphere' in French , so unless Eno
has a copyright on definition , Ambient should be whatever U
want it to be .

I dig the atmosphere SAW85-92 generates , so ambient is a
fine definition by me

Eno was in the hospital many years ago and while he was
there the radio was on, but the sound was too soft so he
could only hear small parts of the music. That's how he came
up with ambient music: forniture music, a part of the
atmosphere...
He wrote it all down and the whole story appeared in the
inlay of his very first ambient album, that's where he gave
his definition. Now I don't know if he has some kind of
copyright on it but he pointed out his definition of ambient
music very well.

hm... yeah, i think you're right nexus. Some ambient-tracks
do have beat, and still it very much becomes a part of the
environment.

In SAW 85-92 there is just too much happening for it to be
ambient (not that that's a bad thing, but it aint ambient!).
These tracks draw attention to them (especially the really
good ones like heliosphan and green calx, which totally suck
me in).

Who cares if he called it SAW 85-92? The albums damn good.
And get your facts right. Eric Satie invented ambient music
and coined the term furniture music. Eno simply took his
idea and called it "ambient". Fuck his rules.

actually, for more information on this, theres a book called
Ambient:Music In the Electronic Era, which features pretty
much every major electronic artist and many more. Its an
interesting read, i suggest you buy it for the real history
of the genre.

Yeah, it's not very ambient... Green Calx is pretty fucking
abrasive.

Either way, it's beautiful... and tracks like Xtal and Tha
have this serene feeling, kind of ''ambient''... so it's not
such an innaccurate title, really. It kicks ass either way.

not exactly, just that he didn't "invent" ambient music and
doesn't really have the rights to make rules for a musical
form that existed before he was born.
And in that book, SAW vol. 1 and 2 are listed as being in
the top 100 Ambient recordings of all time.

i actually like that album more than any of his other works.

I'm not sure Eno ever claimed to be the inventor of ambient
music. Anyone have the liner notes of that album? Music for
Airports and On Land have no such claim.

of his early works i prefer the songs of the "classics"
compilation.it's there where aphex shows wherhe's going to
go.saw85-92 is a story on its own that he has forgot that
kind of mood

of classics, i only like polynomial c, which is one of my
favorite songs of his. as far as the others are concerned,

polynomial c & isopropanol are really classics...the rest i
reckon it's harsh...i don't like digeridoo which is
considered a landmark in electronic music but i van't see

Digeridoo is one of the first Aphex tracks I downloaded off
of (RIP) Naspter back in the day. I loved it... still do.
It's not great, but it's a bit of personal nostalgia for me.
