XLTRONIC SITUATION

Don't panic already. I'm just here to inform you that the
site will be released in portions, starting on Aug
7th.

The most essential part, the messageboard, will be released
along with a mini-variant of the discography. Other sections
will be added as soon as they are ready.

Please, have patience with us. This is a HUGE project and it
will stay online "forever" - this is just the beginning.

Besides, it's summer... and damn hot.

Feel free to post any questions regarding this in the space
provided below.

will there be several mb's? as in autechre boards, afx
boards etc.

Please do a better job putting it in piece by piece than
joyrex did. Make it very clear what's available and what's
not.
I can't wait to see it!

that's why we release it in portions, maybe a better word is
"modules", so you could easily see what's done.

we shall also provide you with a fuzzy timetable so you'll
know when the diff. sections are to be launched.

Ah damn, I have to say I'm disapointed... but not really,
because it IS quite a project and it IS summer, so I
understand. But I won't hide my disapointment. ;-) Shades of
the watmm.com problem, though hopefully not that bad.

It'll all be worth the wait anyway, no hurry.

no, there will be one single messageboard. i dont want to
lose the unique community feeling we have here - and i have
a strong feeling it will be splitted if we use diff.
boards.

other artists are discussed in here already - so there will
not be such a big difference.

i'm sure you would have been even more disappointed if we
didn't told you lot about it in advance?

i repeat, this is really a HUGE project, and it will affect
your lifes even more then Astrobotnia did.

Great! That's all I wanted to hear. Don't divide this board
up, it's a pain in the ass to check out multiple sections.

Even though another section is just a click or two away...
people are DAMN lazy, and you can they wouldn't bother
sometimes.

No way will I ever bother checking the ''General'' and
''Music Making'' sections at WATMM. Pain in the ol' ass...
this is perfect, nice job.

What do you want to improve on the search?

Right now the only possible upgrade is to introduce AND/OR
connections between the words you are looking up.

That would pretty much be it. (ignore the dashes)

--"Aphex Twin"-- should results only in instances of both
words together.

--Aphex Twin-- should give you results in which both words
are said in a thread, but not necessarily together

--"Lucid Dream" Aphex-- should give you results of thread(s)
with the phrase "Lucid Dream" that also contain the word
Aphex

and so on...the OR function isn't so important.

Also, if there was a little advanced search menu, There
should be checkboxes such as "Topic" "Thread" "Member"

and you could check Topic if you only wanted results from a
title, thread if you only wanted message text, Member if you
wanted to search by poster, and any combination of the
three

(the "Member" is less important but would be a nice feature,
the searches might yield too many results for wizard and up
members)

Don't mean to make demands of any kind, I'm just telling you
what would make the best and easiest search engine, the
google of XLTRONIC

sine707 knows what i'm talking about when i say this: fix
the search function so that it can search words less than 4
letters long. for example, "sex change" (in quotes) will get
you every thread ever and i know we're not that dirty.

good luck with xltronic phobiazero and company

i decided to post this here instead of the long winded posts
thread:

i'm constantly getting my posts chopped off.. maybe that
should be fixed in xltronic. not unlimited space, but maybe
double what's allowed now.

searching for a three letter word will kill the database.
imagine the number of words...

just eliminate/ignore words like

and, or, the, an, that, this

(etc.) like search engines such as google and yahoo do. you
can do that right?

it's a performance issue and it's not technically possible
to search for words <4 chars - it's up to our ISP to upgrade
a module - even then the performance thingy remains.

Phob: Good luck with the launch... I think it goes without
saying how monumental a project a site like this is
especially once you get into the 'meat' of things...and
look, you had tons of people to help out too! It's just
overwhelming sometimes when you take all of one artist in
the detail you cover them, and multiply it by 4 or 6 or
more...

And of course the unforseen issues are always a
pain...especially if they cause setbacks.

I'm sure Xltronic will make all the .nu'ers happy as clams!

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-07-31 22:23 [#00332564]
Points: 1389 Status: Lurker

Look at it this way: variety is the spice of life - Phob and
his gang will probably cover artists I'm not going to, and
his method of covering them will most likely be vastly
different than mine - it will be like .nu and joyrex was -
different ways of displaying information, and in the new
site's cases, different information in some cases.

Things are just now starting to come together now with
watmm... after that we can go forward and start doing the
things we have planned (like adding another artist to the
roster, and adding more content that serves the electronic
music fan.

You should have autosuscribing threads. IE: If you start a
thread or post in one, that thread is marked somewhere in
your personal options/folder. You can then go straight to
that folder and see if anyone has replied to those threads
since you did.
