Isn't this exactly the same as the "communist agent network"
(can't remember the exact name) that russia operated in WW2?

Each member of the state was effectively a compulsory govt.
agent whose duty it was to report anything against the
people's party.

Surely this is just a great way to get revenge on
coworkers/acquaintences by reporting that they recieve a lot
of strange visitors, thereby ensuring they get taken away
gestapo stylee? :)

It's also a rather covert way of making people feel part of
the system and to take any attack on the state more
personally.

I'm fairly MOR (neither left or right), but this is v.
scary...

Ever played the game "Deus Ex" remeber the bit that
describes potential terrorists as "having unusual habits, an
interest in electronics and recieving a large number of
packages". I fall into all those categories :(

wow... this is downright terrifying. I know I already have
a fat, juicy FBI file (HI FELLAS!), but to have that extend
into my personal life, courtesy of the mail man, or whoever,
is awful. Not to mention that just about anybody could be
reported as doing something "suspicious."

I'm even more concerned about who will have access to this
information - I'm sure the gov't will say, "oh yeah, we'll
keep the info secure, and only authorized high-ranking
federal agents can gte to it," but even if they do that
(which is unlikely in itself), I wouldn't trust them to
adhere to it. Between this, the USA-PATRIOT act, and
US-COINTELPRO, I'm just about ready to get the hell outta
this horrible country.

The government now has perfect legal jurisdiction to:

get a report from your gas meter man that you were perhaps
doing something as suspicious as... taking out the trash
late at night (which I do all the time). The HORROR! Then,
using that information, they can send federal agents to your
house, pull you out of your bed, throw you in a federal
prison without bail, deny you the right to an attorney or
even trial by jury, and have a federal military judge
sentence you to death in a secret military tribunal, and
nobody will know where you went. OR, thanks to
US-COINTELPRO, they could sit in at a union meeting, or some
activist event posing as just another Joe, take notes on who
was "suspicious," and *then* sentence you to death in
secret. OR, thanks to USA-PATRIOT, if you're doing anything
that could be classified as "dissenting against the
government," such as attending a protest for our dwindling
civil liberties, or perhas for abortion, or gay rights, or
whatever the case may be, you can be classified as a
terrorist and sentenced to death in secret.

Stalin would be so proud.
