Remember that song Mutual Slump on Endtroducing?? Well
thats a FLUKE song! I just dled it! I can't believe it and
neither can Princo. Maybe some of you knew this already but
if not...now you know! And if you don't believe me...go buy
Fluke's cd Oto or dl it!

THIS SUCKS!!!!!! I thought he would have sampled better than
that.

Does that make him a sellout? Isn't a sellout someone who
changes their style to sell more records?

hey that's the proper definition of sellout. however dj
shadow is overhyped and kind of lame in my opinion.

i still think mutual slump is a great track!

No...not in this case...if he took a song like
Fluke's...like the WHOLE THING ... thats selling out. I
thought dj shadow worked like this...

1) get a beat from record 1
2) get a melody from record 2
3) get a certain crash cymbal from record 3
4) get a bass line from record 4
5) put them together for a song

not TAKE THE WHOLE SONG!!! ANYONE can do that!!

i think the term is....
"grabed a track on put his name on it" without any
modification what so ever.

from him. dj shadow would have to time travel

but did you answer my question - call me doubting thomas but
i wanna see proof of release dates for both records ..
with dj shadows rep i don't think he would have done this -
also it is likey to have been bought up in the music press -
i haven't read it anywhere

behind endtroducing! it came out in 95 and endtroducing
came out in 96

but ws it on a single or anything before hand ??
maybe they just used the same sample - it happens alot ..
it might be more intersting to find out what sample is used
in the track than accuse shadow of selling out...

the hook is

On "Mutual Slump," he uses an unrecognizable sample from
a Bjork song and crafts another huge, half organic/half
electronic beat to lead the song along over goofy
samples.

Shadow was doing stuff with the guys in Soulsides and
Quannum before Entroducing wasn't he?

If so, there's no telling how much older material may have
made it onto his record. Wasn't most of Preemtive Strike
older stuff?

from breakbeat chronicle:

Though Bay area-based Shadow, or Josh Davis, is a sucker for
rare jazz and funk stuff, he doesn't hesitate to borrow from
big-selling artists like U2, Metallica and Icelandic singer
Bjork. On his album "Endtroducing" the song "Mutual slump"
confronts shrieking drums with Bjork's mellow chords of
"Possibly maybe". And we can stay in Scandinavia, telling
you that the same Shadow-song "Mutual slump" starts off with
a psycho drum-fill by progg-rocker Pugh Rogefeldt from
Sweden. "Love Love Love" is the tune. There you are.

he also sampled metallica for the bassline of what dioes
your soul look like - it's enter sandman i think

shadow is a collage artist

he takes what he thinks sounds good, and will suit his
musical ideas.

it shouldnt matter where he samples from, as long as he
makes it work.

dont be so quick to judge

fluke also remixed bjork alot so it wouldn't be a suprise if
they sampled her in return...

DJ Shadow a sellout? Yes/No/Maybe

My vote is No -- I just wish he played a better live set.

i'm not sure that the term sellout applies - what has he
done here - used the same sample as someone else - probably
unwittingly - big deal...
he didn't sign to sony go on tour with britney and use his
music to advertise burger king whilst remixing j z - also
too often when an artist is accused of selling out it is
because he or she doesn't live up to their audiences
principals and expectations ..it's a confusing term...

I think rip off works better than sell out. He's not the
only one. Funki porcini stole a jazz song didnt change it
one bit put it on his record and on the record it says
everything written produced arranged etc by funki porcini.
Copyright blah blah blah. I would agree that's pretty lame
makes you wonder how much work he really put into his beats.

uhhhh The kid who said "DJ Shadow is a sellout" is
BUGGING!!!! :)

Do u know what selling out means?

I couldnt stop laughinG!! LOL

What are u talking about!?

YES. I got Flukes album Oto from 95...so what!? They use the
same sample, so what? ITs a dope track regardless and DJ
shadow made a creative track, stop whining.

Who cares if he sampled a Fluke track. That is a terrible
reason to bash him.

And if he didn't sample it then he reworked it.

Here's a prime example

Jega - Unity Gain(Off spectrum) It's a reworking of Two
Lone Swordsmen Black Commandments.

Musicans are allowed to do such a thing, and furthermore.
Did you like the song before you heard Fluke were the ones
that did the song 1st? Yeah, kinda thought so.

Never heard the fluke song, so I guess they both swiped the
same thing from one of Bjork's songs.

I doubt the Shadow would ever completely rip-off a track by
another artist. IMO he's the best DJ in the business and I
doubt he'd want to get caught doing something like that.

It doesn't look like he needs to. As some one posted
earlier he used a Bjork sample and added other beats and
sounds to it as did Fluke.

dj shadow doesnt credit most of his samples...

its a money issue...

you have to gamble with it...

what are the samples most likely to be recognized, and which
ones arnt.

his music is 100% samples, so if he cleared them all (i.e.
crediting them) he would have to spend sooooo much money.

he talks about it in his Remix interview, and puts it into
alot better wording then i just did...
