So what led you to Aphex?

I went from sitting in my bedroom at 12 year old (1989)
tuning into Pirate Acid House stations and listening to Stu
Allen on Key 103, through to drum and bass in 92 then Aphex
in 93 onwards...I got into Ae about 95. I got into hip hop
in 93 too when I heard Protect Ya Neck by Wu Tang.

my favourite aussie station Tripple J who where playing the
song simulcast to Rage (a aud tv music video show goes from
about 11:45am til 6:00am) It was then when i felt my bones
become electrified by the beats of window licker...i had to
know more about this masked bandit....to be continued

i was wirking at a college radio staion a few years back in
NYC, as the music director. the RPM music director, popped
on the rdj cd and i liked it! then in the next couple days
he walked in with the come to daddy and windowlicker videos
and i was hooked! at the time i was really into irish music,
still am but i got hooked on that rdj album, so much so i
stole it from the staion, along with other cds at the time,
i worked at a radio station thats what you do! then i went
out bought the videos, and come to daddy ep. from there i
bought ICBYD then moved back home and hed trouble finding
his stuff up here, found enough to keep me happy though1

Hmm, come to think of it, my story is really boring. No big
revelations or epiphanies. I just saw an interview with RDJ
on MTV, back in '92 and he sounded interesting.

Well, being an (cough) eighties child,i suppose i was first
introduced to electronic stuff via synth pop, acid house
etc.I then got exposed to unknown techno artists(shocking)
and started getting into a group called Sheep on drugs.I was
in a pub in Scotland, then the vid for 'On' came on the big
screen....i was just like WTF!!!???.Listened to pirate
stations and a whole host of freaked out fuckness.God,is
anybody still awake after that? zzzzzz...}:>

i heard music by rdj in early 90's, but i didn't get into it
at first.
i was listening to all kinds of electronic music before.
when i bought my first susumu yokota's album, i was totaly
impressed-so i read some articles about him.most of critics
compared yokota with early music of rdj
and brian eno.and because i bought some rdj albums before i
discoverd yokota i started to put more attention to those,
and since then im an rdj fanatic.

so thank you susumu yokota
hehe

It went something like this:
Musical Youth: Pass the Dutchie -> Abba -> Meat Loaf -> Pink
Floyd -> Talk Talk -> A Guy Called Gerald: Voodoo Ray ->
Black Dog -> Aphex -> other Warp -> etc

I make no apologies for my starting points, but bear in mind
that I was 12 when Pass the Dutchie got to #1 :) and I
didn't know any better.

the RDJ album. i thought it sucked and didn't listen to
aphex much till i bought SAW II and drukqs. then i got
hooked......

One day, in the middle of a small but hard-fought ground
war, there is a small squad of soldiers sitting on a hill. A
radio message comes in, and is taken by the communications
officer, a sergeant. He says, "Right, men! We have to take
that hill over there!"

And so they start fighting to take the hill. They fight all
day and all night, and most of the next day, and eventually
they take the hill. Just as soon as they've taken it, they
receive another message on the radio. The sergeant takes the
message, and then says, "Right men! Retreat back to that
hill!"

And so they retreat back to the hill that they came from.
When they're safely dug back in on their original hill, one
of the men goes to his sergeant, and says, "Excuse me, sir,
but why did we fight all day and all night to take that
hill, only to have to retreat again immediately? It seems
bloody idiotic, if you ask me."

The sergeant frowns, and says, "Well, you see, you don't get
to see the big picture. If you saw the big picture, you'd
understand."

The soldier starts thinking, and works hard, and after a
while he eventually gets promoted to corporal, and then to
sergeant. On his first day as a new sergeant, he asks one of
his fellow NCOs, "So, what is the big picture, then?".

Sorry that was just a shaggy dog story. I heard him on
amates walkman in maths class. Love at first hear.

listening to my mother's music
- classic rock, 70's 80's pop

listening to what was popular
- 80's synth pop, 80's hair/heavy metal

listening to what I bought
- grunge, industrial, metal, 80's pop

... which led to
- techno -> subgenres -> IDM
- industrial -> NIN -> Ministry -> back to their influences
- metal -> hardcore/punk -> grindcore, black metal, etc.

without getting too specific... that's it

I started off listening to whatever my parents played from
radio stations. Then for the longest time I didn't listen to
music whatsoever. Once I found out that kids in school tried
talking to me about music, I had no clue about what they
we're talking about, so I started listening to the radio.
That got me hooked on some more Hard rock/Metal/Punk stuff.
Rap just wasn't my thing.

nirvana>prodigy>metallica>trance>radiohead>afx

Its a lot more complicated that what I listed, btw.
