There was something I read probably 8 years ago and I don't remember the title or author. And I don't remember if it was a book or just a short story (possibly by Asimov).
Aliens came to Earth in giant spaceships kind of like in Independance Day. But they talked to us and communicated with us. And there was one human chosen to go aboard the ships and actually meet with them, though the aliens wouldn't let the guy see what they looked like--the man would go into a room and talk to one of the aliens who was behind one way glass, or something. Then the guy snuck an explosive into the meeting and detonated the glass hoping to see what they looked like, but he only caught a fleeting glimpse. Eventually, the aliens revealed themselves to us and started integrating into our society. They looked like demons. They were large and red and had wings and a tail, etc.. I don't remember much else.
Does this sound familiar to anyone???? I want to find that book/story!!

Me too! When I read the first post I was like, "I really hope someone resolves this issue in a later post." Well done Dozier!

No way I can't stand him. I feel he stifles imagination--he's anal about precisely delineating everything in a scene to the extent that you can't build on it. I like authors who provide rich detail in a way which _facilitates_ whimsy.
Also he seems really impressed with himself all the time, which I guess most good authors have, but bothers me a lot when I already find the person in question.
Anyone else here like Iain M. Banks or Roger Zelazny (just getting into the latter)?

Yeah he did, I'm reading that now. His sci-fi stuff is published under Iain M. Banks and the other stuff under just Iain Banks.
I've never read any Clarke but this story sounds quite good.
