QUESTION #6

think from lincoln,ne on 2001-03-24 00:10 [#00001400]

do you believe in peer pressure ??
if yes, why dont the peeps think for themself and do what is
right? not what is kool?

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-03-24 00:16 [#00001402]

good question.

in short, i believe in peer pressure but how someone is
affected by it all comes down to the individual. some people
are obviously easier swayed by others. not to mention, who's
doing the pressuring? is it someone who wields great power
over you or an incidental acquaintance?

so, lots of variables, it'd be foolish of me to generalize.
but i believe that friends do affect each other... both in
positive AND negative ways.

I think peer pressure comes in different extremes, for one
person the thought of someone asking them to do drugs may
just be an easy "no" but maybe if they're pressured to play
some sort of prank they'll do that..I know, and im sure you
guys do, sometimes you can be encouraged and know by doing
something you can get a laughed, In a way i dont believe in
peer pressure because if you have a mind you should be smart
enough to think for yourself.

*can get a laugh* i mean

Yeah. I reckon peer pressure can be a positive thing
sometimes, I mean, like, being pressured to do a good thing
by your friends and whatnot. Like, errr... going up to sing
karaoke but not having the fish 'n' chips to do it until yer
mates cheer you on and push you up on stage. Tee hee.

Question: what's "peer pressure" called when it comes from
someone you have romantic affection? I know you're "blinded
by love" in a situation like this but I think this is a type
of peer pressure as well, since you're more willing than not
to go out of your way for something for someone you have a
crush on, right?

peer pressure, though i don't support it at all...yeah, i'm

optimistic thought in a while...

Well In my opinon we "don't" think for ourselves and merely
act of input that has been subconciously drilled into our
brain (which is just a cluster of nerves, just like when you
tap your knee and kick only a lot more complex) so peir
pressure is when you are having an "impulse" (aka. I don't
wanna do drugs) and you say no, then the other guy says
"come on, just once" and makes you want to do it to gain
social acceptance, (another impulse) so you have two
subconciuos impulses acting
1: self preservation, Don't wanna get screwed up over
something, (practical jokes, doing drugs etc..)
2: moral preservation {wanna stay as a socialite among your
friends(we are a "herd" animal after all)}

so we conciously think for a second, (because our "sub"
concious has been overloaded with two conflicting issues)
and no matter which answer we come to we feel bad, because
we have violated a nerve impulse, that is what peer pressure
means to me, but then again, people are saying that I
psychoanalyse to much, so maybe I'm just paranoid, Or maybe
I just need more sleep, goodnight
