"the term may come from the opening of church poor boxes
that day; maybe from the earthenware boxes with which boy
apprentices collected money at the doors of their masters'
clients."

It's my birthday, that's reason enough to celebrate I think.

It's a victorian thing, they believed that christmas day
itself should be reserved for going to church, boxing day
was the day you actually opened boxes (presents).

Boxing day began in the middle ages where church boxes where
opened and the money distributed to the poor. Then in the
19th century it was revived along with the idea of the Lords
and Ladies presenting their servents with boxes of left over
food as a thankyou for their work over the festive period.

From this comes the slang "to box someone off" which
basically means you will ensure that person gets what he/she
deserves.

It dates back to the Bronze Age.

The people of this time respected the lesbian. On Christmas
night all straight people (young and old) + gay men consumed
cubes of bronze. After consumption they slept for over 24
hours. Therefore on the 26th of December only lesbians were
awake.

This practice allowed the lesbians to roam the land and eat
eachother's "boxes" all day. Hence boxing day.
