Yes, this is one of my last year's favourite albums. I like
the way how the sounds are both recognisable and functional.

Have you heard "the banjo's categorical gut"? Brilliant
sample work on that.

Are their band-name taken form the cult-movie "Barbarella"
with Jane Fonda?

Have you seen "Barbarella"? I've heard that Drew Barrymore
will take Jane Fondas part in a new version.

Matmos is named from the Barbarella movie. In that movie,
Matmos was the alien planets living core, which Barbarella
was almost sacrificed to. Referring to Pygar (the blind
Angel who doesn't know he can fly) and Barbarella, the evil
empress says "Throw them into the Matmos". I hope that they
don't remake this movie, that would miss the whole point.

I have a matmos lava lamp. Purple water with bright red wax.
Best colors ever seen in a lava lamp.

some stuff like matmos isn't interesting to listen to unless
you know the track's creation process, i think this is a
major problem

yes it is ..
it just makes it more fun if you know the process - which
might mean gasp - readinf some factual information about the
band and gasp 2 buying the cd - i can see this being a
problem on this board which relies on rumours and "soulseek"

What I liked about "A chance to cut..." is exactly the fact
that it is utterly listenable even withoout the knowledge of
sound-sources. It is a great album. I believe a lot of you
Bjork-Heads here do know that Matmos did a lot of music on
her last album. And they toured with her as well. Anyone has
their new EP with Lesser? Speaking of Lesser (third,
"silent" part of Matmos duo), does anybody dig his stuff?
His album "Gearhound" is fantastic and tigerbeat 6 recently
released an MP3 CD of 10 years of his music.

no problem for me and a lot of the intellectual/music
afficionado types on this board, but what i'm saying is, it
keeps the average joe from ever enjoying the album. you
can't have a joan osbourne, ratt, or chemical brothers fan
just go pick up a matmos or matthew herbert album (well,
especially matmos) and have them fall in love with it.
essentially these artists have crafted a career based on
people reading articles about (or by) them, which is a very
unrealistic expectation for the listener. just because a lot
of us are into it doesn't mean the rest of the population is
(they don't KNOW there's a story behind the songs unless the
story is included in the liner notes or passed onto them by
their other friends, and most people don't have friends who
are obsessed with field recording samples).

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2002-07-01 15:23 [#00291625]

...so in other words i disagree with meho's claim that the
average person would enjoy matmos w/o knowing the story
behind the tracks. i think some tracks are more enjoyable
than others based on the music alone, but i still think it's
an act you really have to be informed of to get into them.

Hey, who gives a shit? It's interesting trivia and all, but
if the music sucked I couldn't be arsed to listen to it
based on "interesting stories" about it.

offline Meho Krljic from Beograd (Yugoslavia) on 2002-07-01 15:29 [#00291632]

A lot of "avantgarde" music is a lot of conceptualising/
contextualising but I just care about the music itself.
Sure, the fact that the gurgling sound in the first track is
made by human fat being sucked out is a good laugh, but that
track is excellent regardless. As well as "For felix...",
they strum and hit the cage of their deceased pet rat, but
it's really the sound that's great.

'A Chance to cut..' could have been weirder. I was hoping to
hear an entire surgery session ambient track, but instead
it's sequenced sucking noises.

i wasn't putting down your opinion of it, just expressing my
own. you're right, it is listenable, but it's interesting
how for most people (though not you) they have to know the
story to really appreciate the track.

it's cool, tits: I am just trying to say that with all this
music available (at least to us, people shameless enough to
download/ burn/ illegally copy it in any way imaginable), it
is necessary to be able to differentiate between cool
concepts that sound shit and good music.

I get with tits is saying but lets not forget
Vespertine...very unconventional clicks and cuts making up
very accessible and listenable pop tunes.......

that's true, but they didn't produce the whole album, and a
lot of the songs they're on bjork is just as responsible for
the sound. besides writing the melodies and playing
keyboards, she's also a pretty proficient laptop programmer.

I agree..but still...their contribution has to be the most
unconventional pop music ever...and A chance to cut is not
the ghoulish gore fest I expected going into it...infact it
was the exact opposite..extremely accessible...

"their contribution has to be the most
unconventional pop music ever."
yea i totally agree with that, good point.

i don't think a chance to cut is as a difficult listen as
confield but i don't think most people would be into the
album if it were, say, made up of untitled tracks and there
was no way to find out how the tracks were made besides
guessing. i just think it's a bit too much in novelty
territory, as interesting and enjoyable as it is.

Nahh man, just buy the whole A chance to cure is a chance to
cut,listen to its entirety.it's a great trip...I just love
what they do with the samples and music....
And definitely, apart from Bjork' voice, what made Vespertine
interesting is Matmos electroacoustic music, that's my
personal opinion....
