The New BoC sound

Im now listening to Four Tet's cd Pause after I heard Lemon
Jelly's Lemon cd and it's come to my attention that a lot of
acts are incorporating jazz into the common hip hop...but in
the same way BoC does. They all sound similar...which is
good. Im enjoying hearing different sides to a sub
genre...what ever genre the 'BoC sound' is.

I'm listening to Freescha's '"Slower Than Church Music''
right now, and I'd put them in the ''BOC sound'' group. It
has the same calming melodies with the slow nifty beats. Me
like.

eh?...
i cant quite say i know what youre talking about...

explain what you mean by 'incorporating jazz into the common
hip hop'...

Well like BoC, Lemon jelly, Four Tet...having a jazz sound
but putting hip hop beats to it.

thats not really new though...hip hop has always had a jazz
element...especially instrumental hip hop...you have to
remember the 'hip hop beat' most often comes from sampled
jazz records...

artists like four tet and boc (i havent heard lemon jelly)
seem to have been influenced by labels like mo'wax and ninja
tune and artists like dj shadow and dj krush...who have all
been making jazzy (mostly instrumental) hip hop for most of
the 90's

all.

niether do I... it seems people here throw around the word
Jazz way too often... I've also seen Autechre being called
Jazzy... I really don't see how electronic music in general
has anything to do with Jazz... Jazz is pretty free, whereas
electronic music is, well, just the opposite I think... by
free I mean the soloing and stuff... also, a totally
different sound...

influence.

hmmm, yeah you're right, there are some exceptions... but
still, groups like Autechre and Boards of Canada have
nothing to do with jazz in my mind...

i can't hear any jazz in boc.

with the possible exception of 'turquoise hexagon sun',
which has a slightly chromatic jazz key thing happening. but
apart from that, there's nothing jazz about them.

Nothing out there sounds like BoC (with the exception of
Christ's 'Pylonesque' EP, but hey, he's ex-boc) and that's
what makes them great.

Yeah, the 'Pylonesque' 12" sounds more bocish than BoC
themselves.... I really like the dirty oldskool sound of
BoC, satisfy me more than Geogaddi.
