ok. i'm not usually doing these, but i haven't seen this
poll here. so give me your top5 vocalists, and why.
some of my favourites include...

mike patton (faith no more, mr. bungle, fantômas, tomahawk,
solo) - versatility! perfect control over his voice/no
control at all, caffeine freak... his mad. i'm mostly
impressed w/ mr. bungle & fantômas.

jeff buckley! - i can't express it... perfect voice, great
songs, *emotion*...

tom waits - versatility again... like all different
characters... and how deep can a voice actually be? "the
black rider", "swordfishtrombones" & "mule variations"...

plankton - ok... you don't know this guy, hes an finnish
underground mc & producer and the only hiphop musician that
i really love. i got this [rare] tape that's unbeliviebly
down, depressed, slow, fucked up but somehow incredibly
beatiful.

björk - beautiful... original, expressive voice. i like
"homogenic" & "vespertine".

oh well i also like dennis lyxzén (refused/t.i.n.c),
maynard james keenan (tool, apc), curt cobain (laugh if you
want), thom yorke (radiohead)...

why am i doing this? i've never wrote this much here... damn
i'm tired.

David Gilmour- Oh baby, I'd go gay for THAT voice. Not. But
he still sounds fucking awesome. Wish HE sang all their
stuff, not Roger Waters.

Serj Tankian- He makes System of a Down sound a lot better
than they are, I LOVE all the fancy little things he does
over the course of a song.

John Lennon- Well, it's a given.

Paul McCartney- Ditto.

Maynard James Keenan- listening to him now, he be sexy.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young- they make me shiver when
they harmonize, yowza. And Young has this nice quivery
voice.

Brian Wilson- his voice is just amazing... nuff said. So
much emotion in Pet Sounds!

James Hetfield- go ahead, laugh.

Fran Healy- Go ahead, rape and murder me and slice my body
up into bits, I don't care. I like his voice.

i've been listening to so much instrumental music i just
thought i'd bring this up...

john frusciante is good, he can't sing but that doesn't
matter.

right on w/ Mike Patton. Bjork is great too. I also love
Tricky, Elizabeth Fraser, Beth Gibbons, and Horace Andy.

Thanks man... I don't really love any vocalists apart from
the ones I mentioned... IDM is mostly instrumental and when
I listen to rock I concentrate mostly on the guitars =o/

yeah, i mostly concentrate on the whole... it's just that
vocalist are usually playing too important roles in songs
and many times making them suck...

license>

yeah, Massive attack are all excellent / the way the singing
is more rhyming talk at times__its like conversation....with
Tricky Kid as he was known then.

I respect more vocalists who wrote their own music. Its more
from the heart really... so I guess that makes Bob Dylan
great although many believe his weakness was his voice.
Thats a bit negative IMO. Go easy on the old boy :

What makes a good vocalist?

For me it is when you go goosebumpy when they sing.

yeah, I agree 010101. if they can connect with you in the
same way that good music can. hearing Fraser sing on "Group
Four" and the way her fragile voice lilts and cracks, like a
dove with a broken wing...sends a chill down my spine and
brought me to tears a couple times.

Yeah baby, vocalists. I never really expected this topic to
come up around here, so I'm pleasantly surprised.

Now seeing as a few of my top 5 are pretty popular, I expect
some of you will turn up your noses and smirk at me, but I
like who I like, whether popular or underground...

-Fleming ___ ? (from Fleming & John)
-Gwen Stefani (mmm)
-Thom Yorke (lots of feeling, I like that)
-Ben Folds (again lots of feeling, and just kind of fun, ya
know? like he doesn't care if he sounds good, he just sings
when he feels like singing)
-Rosemary Clooney (my oddest on the list. but you really
can't beat those old chicas... i've been trying to sing like
her since i was old enough to watch White Christmas.)

There you have it, my top 5 =)
