I don't know how many times this has been discussed on this
board but
I really don't care cause it's a film
to end all films. Creativity hasn't been this creative with
films since Citizen Kane. I posted about it on the
warpboard a while ago and no one cared back then but I
figure a lot of you have seen it by now. How many of us
have seen it and what do we think?

i want to be frank for halloween.

donnie darko ranks up there with pi and royal tenenbaums
(which comes out on dvd early july, by the way) as far as
films go. the dvd commentary for donnie darko is good. it
gave the whole movie a new twist for me.

actually, the first time i watched it, i rewound it and
watched it again. highly recommended.

Requiem for a Dream is disturbing beyond anything else... I
never want to watch it again... it was very intense, and
portrayed what it wanted to very well, and effectively, but
I didn't enjoy it much...

offline wayout from the street of crocodiles on 2002-06-22 07:34 [#00279935]

requiem was incredible...it wasnt really meant to be
enjoyed...in fact that was the point...

people are too used to movies being like rollercoaster
rides...you strap yourself in a safe little car...climb a
hill...get a few thrills on the way down...and end up safe
in the loading dock where you started..

the best movies are the ones that take you somewhere
different from where you were...and dont always ensure you a
safe ride...and sometimes this results in rides that end by
sending the car off a cliff

Whatever dude!

Donnie ends with the main character going through a
wormhole.

Now that's not any formula in a movie
ever.

Donnie Darko!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah...i was being too medaphorical there...what i meant was
that the best movies are the ones that dont stay on the same
track as normal movies...
ending the movie by having the main character go through a
wormhole is a good example of "going off the track"

i disliked this movie quite a bit. My friend who runs a
movie review website (that gives him INSTANT credibility :p)
thought it was overhyped as well.

Too much pride is taken in telling everyone how GREAT this
UNDERGROUND movie was. It's fun to say how revolutionary
and neat it was becuase it was so weird.

I find those same people making these claims about it being
so wonderful are the same ones who claim to understand
Mullhollad Drive from start to finish.

Both are BS statements in my opionion. Though provoking,
yes. A good movie? Hardly.

What the fuck ever,
you apparently can't think abstractly if you can't
understand DD.

the story is a perfect mixture of Realism versus fantasy,
and how the two correllate at all times.

The explanation of the film on the website
make it even that more complex and interesting.

it's not an uderground film, everyone and their dog are
seeing it now on VHS,
making pretty out on the open.

It has Patrick Swayze in it!

He ain't underground one bit.

It's an indie flick, that's now a cult classic b/c so many
are enjoying
and seeing the beautifulness of combining
the Breakfast Club with
the Twilight Zone, that's creativity
and I'm sorry that you can't get into it
or respect it but it is one of the best films EVER!

I would like to disagree with you about it's underground
nature.

Happiness, had John Lovitz in it, more current than Patrick
Swayze ever was, yet that movie isn't popular.

Nor is John Lovitz underground, like you said Swayze wasn't,
that doesn't make a movie a cultural phenomenom.

Also, a movie that you have to read an explanation on a
website is thought provoking, yes, I said that. But if a
movie couldn't tie itself together at it's end for a
relativly educated viewer to understand the conclusion, well
you certainly can't consider it one of the best films EVER.

Ok, so I arguend 2 points. I didn't think my post warranted
being sworn at either.

sorry I'm just passionate about this film.

I understood it after two views which I think is a good
thing cause a film should
be able to be seen multiple times.

I've seen it six by now though and I still enjoy it.

That's what makes a good film in my opinion.

The site just adds to what is already
a complete idea on film, the philosophy of time travel on
the site explains exactly what Donnie was experiencing,
which makes it that much more deep.
